DENVER — Farmers' markets have begun to return after a lengthy COVID-19 shutdown — and at the One Belleview Station Farmers' Market in Denver, a laid-off restaurant worker is doing her part to get fresh produce to those that need it.Alexandra LittleJohn lost her job as a barista due to the pandemic. But she used her restaurant connections to buy produce boxes for co-workers."Once I got laid off, people just started sending me money and said we wanted to donate a box. So I found a way to donate the boxes," she said.Her work evolved into the LittleJohn Produce Box Project. Using restaurant suppliers, she's boxing up fresh vegetables to be sold and donated amid the pandemic."This is a produce box project that was founded out of COVID-19," LittleJohn Produce said. "I never thought I'd be slinging produce at the farmers market in a pandemic."She started selling the boxes online and at farmers' markets, like the one at Belleview Station. She fills the boxes with locally-grown produce from Fresh Guys Produce that would usually be sold to restaurants, but due to the pandemic, it's not."It would just go to waste, and the farmers wouldn't be getting their full price for them," LittleJohn said.LittleJohn wanted to help farmers, the local produce companies, and, of course, the people who needed fresh food."We use some of the profits for operating expenses like buying a banner, getting a tent, or paying for gas, but then we also buy boxes to give back to other people," LittleJohn said.They have sold almost 800 boxes so far, and with the help of sponsors, they've donated over 350 boxes.LittleJohn says she's applying for 501(c)(3) status to get grants and do even more."It makes me feel like I'm contributing in a positive way to just get us through this. DENVER - A Colorado gun store owner who appeared on the reality TV show 'American Guns' on Discovery Channel has been sentenced to 6.5 years in prison for tax fraud and dealing without a license.Richard Wyatt, 54, was sentenced to 78 months on Thursday.Wyatt operated the Gunsmoke gun shop in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. He was convicted last year on 10 counts, including not reporting income to the IRS.According to court records, Wyatt surrendered his federal firearms license in 2012 for unspecified violations but continued to sell guns from his store by working with another gun shop that had a license. Prosecutors said Wyatt entered sales from his store into the computer system as "miscellaneous" instead of gun sales and had customers go to the other store to fill out the background check paperwork.The court found that a total of 490 guns were involved in Wyatt's illegal operation, all of which the court ordered forfeited. 938

Despite a ruling from the Michigan Supreme Court that struck down several emergency COVID-19 orders by the state's governor, a statewide mask mandate remains in effect. That's because the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services issued an order of its own, also limiting social gatherings.Three days after Michigan's Supreme Court rules that Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer did not have the authority to issue emergency orders to address COVID-19, the state Department of Health and Human Services issued similar orders on Monday."I want to make clear today's order is lawful under the Michigan supreme decision," Michigan state health director Dr. Robert Gordon said. "...we are tired of the virus, but the virus is not tired of us."The order takes effect immediately.At indoor or outdoor gatherings, masks must still be worn.Wearing a mask must still be enforced by businesses and government offices, and schoolsOnly Region 6 — the western part of the state — is exempt.Just as before, the size of indoor gatherings will be limited.Not all Michiganders are embracing the new mandates."More than 539,000 Michigan citizens stood up against an elected governor abusing her power. They're not going to tolerate an un-elected bureaucrat continuing the abuse," said Ron Armstrong, the co-founder of Stand Up Michigan and state co-chair of Unlock MichiganIn the wake of the ruling, Monday night, Whitmer put out a video urging Michiganders to wear a mask and lawmakers to act."The CDC and experts agree these measures are crucial to slow the spread of the virus, to protect our frontline workers and keep our schools and small businesses open," Whitmer said. 1668

  

Despite more out-of-work Americans amid the pandemic, housing has gotten more expensive during the coronavirus pandemic, especially in rural America.According to findings by Redfin, during the four-week period ending August 2, prices for homes in rural areas jumped 11.3% from 2019 figures. The median house price in urban areas increased by 6.7%. Suburban areas jumped 9.2%.Redfin’s data also indicates more home buyers are looking to move to rural or suburban areas, shying from urban locales. Before the pandemic, 37% of home buyers were searching for homes in urban areas; now it’s 19%. Forty-three percent of home buyers were searching in suburban areas before the pandemic; now, it’s 50%. Nine percent of home buyers were home searching in rural areas before the pandemic; now it’s 19%.During the coronavirus, living close to restaurants, bars, social events and offices is not nearly as much of a priority for many home buyers."We've been speculating about increasing interest in the suburbs and rural areas since the start of the pandemic," said Redfin economist Taylor Marr. "Now we're seeing concrete evidence that rural and suburban neighborhoods are more attractive to homebuyers than the city, partly because working from home means commute times are no longer a major factor for some people. And due to historically low mortgage rates, interest is turning into action. There will always be buyers who choose the city because their jobs don't allow for remote work or they place a premium on cultural amenities like restaurants and bars—which will eventually come back—but right now the pendulum is swinging toward farther-flung places."However, when the coronavirus ends and it becomes safe to return to offices and social events, will buyers regret purchasing a home in far-flung locales?"Newly remote workers from New York City are buying properties in rural areas like Warren County, NJ and Sussex County, NJ, but I expect that some of these buyers may eventually catch post-COVID buyer's remorse," said Darlene Schror, a Redfin agent in northern New Jersey. "Post-pandemic, buyers may realize that while their new neighborhoods make for a nice weekend getaway, the long commute may become unsustainable should things go back to normal. And they'll miss city amenities like high-quality restaurants, shopping centers and walkability."The median price for homes in urban areas are more affordable than suburban and rural regions, but the homes being purchased in non-urban areas are generally larger.The median home price for an urban house in the four weeks ending August 2 was 5,873, according to Redfin. Meanwhile, the median cost for a rural home was 6,750, and the median cost for a suburban home was 2,900.But per square footage, urban homes still were more expensive, costing 6.17 per square foot, compared to 8.76 in the suburbs and 2.58 in the country. 2903
