(AP) — A convicted felon has been charged with abducting two Christian college students and forcing them to perform sex acts on each other at gunpoint after they violated curfew and were locked out of their southwest Missouri campus.Robert Hyslop, 49, of Branson, Missouri, is jailed without bond on charges of kidnapping, sexual abuse and sodomy, the Springfield News-Leader reported. No attorney is listed for Hyslop in online court records. He could face life in prison if convicted.College of the Ozarks, in the small town of Point Lookout, has a 1 a.m. curfew. Gates to the front entrance, known as the Gates of Opportunity, remain locked until 5 a.m.Charging documents say the two students, a male and a female, arrived back at campus 10 minutes too late in the early hours of Oct. 29, so they went to a nearby commuter lot to sleep.Hyslop, who was on probation for a 2017 drug conviction, told Taney County investigator Dan Luttrell that he had been high on methamphetamine for three days when he spotted the sleeping students around 3 a.m., court records say. Hyslop allegedly used a hammer to smash the passenger window, showed a gun, and got inside the car.Luttrell said Hyslop admitted forcing the male student to drive to a highway lookout. Once there, he allegedly forced the students to perform sex acts on each other, and forced the woman to touch him sexually.Hyslop then told the students to drive him back to his car, Luttrell wrote. The students contacted police and gave a detailed description of their attacker and his vehicle. He was arrested several days later. Charges were filed Thursday.College of the Ozarks spokeswoman Valorie Coleman said the college received a report about the incident on Oct. 29 and issued a campus safety alert on Oct. 30. She declined further comment about the alleged crime.Sue Head, the college's vice president for cultural affairs and dean of character education, said students can call a 24-hour security number to unlock the gate."We do have the phone number posted clearly at the front gate," Head said.Coleman and Head said there are legitimate reasons for students to break curfew, including working off-campus jobs. But, she said, "If they are habitually late, they are going to have to have a conversation with the dean of students."Coleman said the college has offered the students confidential counseling."We are sick over this incident for the students. We are trying to protect their privacy," Coleman said. "The fact that all the details have been in the media, I just hate that for them."A campus for another school, Ozarks Technical Community College, also is near the commuter lot. (KGTV) — An auto theft suspect barricaded himself in an SUV at a South Bay motel, prompting a seven-hour SWAT standoff Thursday.SWAT officers surrounded the SUV in the E-Z 8 Motel on Outer Rd. at around 9 a.m. in the Palm City neighborhood, near Otay Mesa West.About 4 p.m., the suspect surrendered with his hands up.The suspect, identified as a man in his late 20s or early 30s, was the suspect of auto thefts in the South Bay and has a criminal history in the National City area, according to San Diego Police. Police had previously told 10News the man was a hit-and-run suspect.National City Police responded to the motel Thursday morning waiting for the suspect to exit, according to SDPD. The suspect and his girlfriend got into the parked SUV. When police surrounded the pair, the woman surrendered but the suspect did not. She was not arrested, police told 10News.Police initially believed the suspect was armed, they're continuing to search his motel room and vehicle for the gun. 1015

Police and other law enforcement are constantly trying to stay ahead of criminals, but sometimes technology can get in the way.Apple made headlines a couple years back, when the company refused to unlock a phone when asked by law enforcement.Then came Grayshift, a company that specializes in cracking iPhones.  "Apple's fighting these guys pretty hard,” says digital security expert Steve Beaty. “Has been a bit of a chess game right."Beaty is a digital security expert professor with Metropolitan State University of Denver."It appears that people aren't now able to break into the iPhone with the most recent release of version 12 of iOS," Beaty explains.While Apple isn't saying much about what they've done, law enforcement around the country will have to scramble to find new ways to get into these devices.Beaty seems to think it's related to a small change in access by adding a USB restrict mode--that disables devices after a certain amount of time if it’s plugged into your phone."They can plug into iPhones, that historically in general, have what we call brute force them," Beaty explains.Brute forcing allows Grayshift to continue putting in passcodes until they find the right one. But because these external devices deactivate after about an hour, their process is interrupted. That's the main belief in how Apple is thwarting these devices.If you're worried about security, it's simple to activate USB restrict mode on your phone. There may be some other problems though you could run into charging issue."So, for the time being, I don't see it being more than a chess game that they are going to be advances made on either side,” says Beaty. “And I don't think there's going to be a definitive, if you will, checkmate in the foreseeable future." 1776

Pizza Hut has teamed up with an educational non-profit to launch a series of antiracism resources for educators.On Wednesday, the pizza company announced they were partnering with First Book on the initiative Empowering Educators, which will provide books, videos, and activities for educators to use when talking about race.The initiative was created after First Book surveyed teachers in 2019 and found that 66% wanted to find a way to talk about racism with students, but didn't feel comfortable doing so.“From the neighborhood to the national level, America is on a critical journey: from identifying racism, to deeper understanding – and finally to dismantling systemic racism,” said Kyle Zimmer, president, CEO and co-founder of First Book in the press release. “To support this journey, First Book is honored to partner with Pizza Hut to launch an unprecedented effort to empower educators – and the children they serve.
