As many feel the trauma inflicted by headlines of racial injustice, COVID-19 continues to hit minorities disproportionally in America. "I think the voices of the young people are being heard and they're speaking out," said Lessie Williams, a community advocate in Portland, Oregon.Williams spent 20 years building up and believing in the young people she serves. Through her church's non-profit organization, Highland Haven, she wanted to bring wrap-around services to families most at risk, expanding mental health services and creating youth violence prevention programs."Building relationships with them, let them know you really care and be your authentic self because kids know," said Williams. For many of those years, she worked alongside Pastor W. G. Hardy, who passed away in 2018.They took part in a national program administered by the CDC aimed at reducing racial and ethnic health disparities."We felt like, focus on health and wellness and try to get rid of some of those disparities in our communities," said Williams.Rather than make the change inside one church, they created a network of churches and community organizations serving African Americans in Multnomah County. Williams worked through this network to increase access to health care, bringing preventive services such as blood pressure screenings to community churches, and increasing access to healthy foods."The biggest thing for me was health. I come from a family of diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and that's not talked about in our community. It's not talked about in our culture," said Teresa Johnson, co-chair for the Highland Haven Health and Wellness Team. They've reached thousands of people through this work, helping community members improve their physical health, manage their mental health, and cope with the traumas of racial injustice."We're going to Zoom and talk about the disparities that are going on in our community, how it is affecting our youth. We've got to wrap around our arms around the youth," explained Johnson. Williams' work earned her the CDC's first REACH Lark Award, an award celebrating those making tangible strides in achieving health equity."Inspirational, humbling, I was really surprised," said Williams. "She gave us the push we needed to get inspired and come up with these ideas and things to do to heighten awareness on health and wellness," said Barbara Perry, the Health and Wellness Coordinator at Life Change Church. While Williams is retiring, the firm foundation she's helped to build will continue on in the city."We always say it takes a village to raise a child," said Johnson. "Well, this village of churches decided we're going to tackle this for our community, and that was the greatest gift." 2737

Animal rescue workers say nearly 600 dogs were rescued from deplorable conditions in Tennessee. Now, dog rescue groups in the midwest are stepping in to help the animals get back to health. Battling multiple infections and numerous medical needs, the recently rescued Dachshunds and Shar Peis were taken from an alleged puppy mill in Madison County, Tennessee. A rescue group, Guardians of Rescue, posted on Facebook they were part of the 11-month-long investigation into the location. In Detroit, animal rights advocates, including Emily Seward from Dachshund Haus Rescue, have already stepped up to care for the animals."They were, and continue to be, in pretty rough shape," Seward said. For her, it's simply unimaginable how someone could neglect dogs so badly, and police say behind a 10-foot-tall privacy fence, the dogs had to face extreme abuse for a decade.Police say the dog owners who were selling them as part of a business had already been accused of abuse and neglect years ago.As investigators crack down on those behind the illegal operation, the dogs are now finally being given the attention they deserve after being rescued over the weekend. The rescued dogs are not available for adoption now, and are considered evidence in a criminal case. 1268

An 8-year-old girl in Florida was seriously injured when a massive tree limb fell on her Monday, as she was playing in a school playground during recess.Patricia Whidden suffered a fractured skull when the limb fell on her, dropping from a live oak at Edward Upthegrove Elementary School in LaBelle."It's an extremely tragic incident, and we are investigating," said Lucinda Kelley, deputy superintendent of Hendry County District Schools.Patricia's aunt Kristi Whidden said her niece has bleeding and swelling of the brain, and is recovering at a hospital in Delray Beach."Right now, she's being kept sedated to give her brain and body a chance to recover," Kristi Whidden said.Live oak trees form a canopy over many schools in Hendry County. Kelley said she believes the limb that fell on Patricia was a freak accident, although the LaBelle area did sustain a lot of damage from Hurricane Irma last fall."The limb that fell did not appear to be, at first glance, related to that," Kelley said. "We are going to ask for the help of an expert arborist to come in and examine all of the trees."In the meantime, the the school district has closed playground where Patricia was hurt. Although sedated, Kristi said her niece did wake up at one point during the night, and was able to respond to questions with a thumbs-up or thumbs-down."Right now, the focus is on Patricia and getting her through this," she said. "A lot of people have sent their prayers and positive vibes."Upthegrove Elementary is organizing a sock hop fundraiser to help Patricia's family with expenses. It will take place on Friday during school hours. 1668
