CHICAGO, Ill. – In 2016, some 33 million ballots were cast by mail, about one quarter of all votes cast. With pandemic protocols and precautions in place, experts estimate a record-breaking number of mail-in votes this election cycle.Voting by mail has been in place for more than 150 years – since the Civil War.“It's become so common in the United States that since 2010, about a quarter of the electorate has voted by mail in federal elections,” said Lawrence Norden, director of the Election Reform Program at the non-partisan Brennan Center for Justice.Some states have what’s known as a universal vote-by-mail system, which means they mail ballots to all their voters. Those include: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.Five automatically mail ballots to voters: Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. And specifically, for 2020, at least four more have done the same: California, New Jersey, Nevada, and Vermont.For months, President Donald Trump has claiming that mail-in voting leads to mass fraud.“The mailed ballots are corrupt, in my opinion. And they collect them, and they get people to go in and sign them. And then they — they’re forgeries in many cases. It’s a horrible thing,” he said to reporters in April.Experts say that’s not true. While there have been a few examples of fraud committed in mail voting, in modern history, studies indicate it’s not common at all.“The chances of somebody committing fraud in mail voting is about the same as somebody getting struck by lightning,” said Norden. “It's extremely rare.”Rejection is more common.According to the Brennan Center, during the midterm elections, nationwide more than 430,000 mailed ballots were rejected due to delays, minor defects, and voter errors. In some states, rejected ballots affected minorities at higher rates than white voters.Norden recommends voting as early as possible when using a mail-in or absentee ballot.“Do it early, so you can avoid the kind of last-minute complications that sometimes we've seen,” he said. “The number one reason that mail ballots don't count is because people get them in late.”Even with the vote-by-mail expansion, there are still variations in deadlines and rules. California health officials are warning residents not to eat oysters from British Columbia, Canada, following a norovirus outbreak.About 100 people got sick in California after they consumed the raw oysters, health officials said."As of April 27, approximately 100 individuals have reported illness after they consumed raw British Columbian oysters sold by restaurants and retailers throughout the state," the California Department of Public Health said."Laboratory testing has confirmed norovirus infection in several patients from both California and Canada. Although the number of reported new illnesses has decreased during the last week, the investigation is ongoing."Canada has reported 172 cases of gastrointestinal illness linked to consumption of raw oysters."Avoid eating raw and undercooked shellfish, including oysters, to reduce your risk of illness," said Dr. Karen Smith, a public health officer in California."If you do eat shellfish, cook it until it reaches an internal temperature of at least 145°F. Quick steaming isn't sufficient to kill norovirus."Norovirus is spread through the ingestion of infectious virions, which grow in the small intestine before being expelled in feces. Infection usually occurs when someone eats food or drinks liquids that have been contaminated, touches surfaces or objects that are contaminated and then puts their hands in their mouth, or has contact with someone who has been infected, such as by sharing food.Norovirus causes inflammation of the stomach, the intestines or both. (KGTV) - Vice President Mike Pence toured the US-Mexico border in Southern California Monday, answering questions about the migrant caravan waiting to apply for asylum.Nearly 200 Border Patrol agents joined the Vice President at the Imperial station in Calexico.Pence said the migrant caravan’s attempt to seek asylum was a direct result of weak immigration laws and a “porous border.”He called on Congress to close what he described as immigration loopholes. Pence also asked for an end to the current catch-and-release policy, and a crackdown on sanctuary cities.“All of this cries out for action and thanks to the leadership to President Donald Trump, we are protecting the American people along our southern border and we are building a wall,” said Pence.Pence toured the construction site of the border fence renovation and received an update on the progress.“This new wall is roughly two or three times taller than the wall that was here today. Car buyers these days love SUVs. They don't, however, love actual cars like hatchbacks and sedans --as Ford has learned.Ford said on Wednesday the only passenger car models it plans to keep on the market in North America will be the Mustang and the upcoming Ford Focus Active, a crossover-like hatchback that's slated to debut in 2019.That means the Fiesta, Taurus, Fusion and the regular Focus will disappear in the United States and Canada.Ford will, however, continue to offer its full gamut of trucks, SUVs and crossovers.By 2020, "almost 90 percent of the Ford portfolio in North America will be trucks, utilities and commercial vehicles," the press release says. "The company is also exploring new 'white space' vehicle silhouettes that combine the best attributes of cars and utilities, such as higher ride height, space and versatility."By "white space," the company is referring to vehicles that don't fall neatly into the typical categories.Ford has hinted it might decide to retire much of its sedan portfolio. Earlier this year, James Farley, the company's president of global markets, said Ford is "shifting from cars to utilities," which have been a bigger profit driver.
