Just Call Us Volunteers are preparing a special Christmas dinner for hundreds of homeless. 30 gallons of stock, 75 pounds of green beans and more than 270 pounds of turkey are just some of the items being served on the dinner menu. Just Call Us Volunteers is strictly made up of volunteers who want to give back. The group will serve at least three homeless shelters around the county on Christmas Day. They offer food to at least “350 at the tent downtown, the Alpha Project tent. We probably got 65 at Rachel’s Women's Shelter and 65 at the San Diego Center for Children,” says Julie Darling, organizer of Just Call Us Volunteers. The food is donated from Specialty Produce, Cupcakes Squared and Sprouts Farmers Markets. The organization says their volunteer list is full for Christmas Day but they give back all year long. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Members of a newly formed Guardian Angels chapter in Pacific Beach went on patrol for the first time Saturday night.Members of the Sacramento Chapter traveled to San Diego to train the new volunteers. Administrator Sarah Bonesteel joined after a neighborhood crime walk, saying "crime is getting out of control, we've lost our parks, and our library and things like that."RELATED: Guardian Angels look to start street patrols in Pacific BeachThe Guardian Angels are a national crime prevention nonprofit organization that started in New York in 1979. The group said it created chapters in over 130 cities in 13 countries.While the group has several programs to prevent crime, the most visible are its street patrols. The Pacific Beach Chapter hopes to provide a safe environment after the bars close.Guardian Angels patrol in groups of at least two while wearing red berets and uniforms, and say the patrols are meant to serve as a visual deterrent and aim to avoid violent confrontations.Angels on patrols are unarmed but trained in self-defense to protect themselves in case a situation becomes physical. They hope they do not have to use their training.The organization conducts background checks on new members to ensure everyone's safety. 1270

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In anticipation of its members returning, 24 Hour Fitness locations around San Diego County have made several changes that will allow them to follow county health guidelines and keep their doors open.Under the state’s tiered system for businesses, 24 Hour Fitness is among those able to resume indoor operations, but with specific modifications in place.The fitness centers are now requiring reservations for 90-minute workout sessions, and each location can only operate at 10 percent capacity, so they have to keep a close eye on how many people are inside of the building.While reservations will not be required for clubs in San Diego County, each club in the county will be capped at a 10 percent capacity.Jeremy Franke, Regional Vice President of 24 Hour Fitness, said, “We have a check-in system where we can check at any time and know how many people are in the club. And when we reach capacity, our system flags and says we’re at capacity. And we’ll have the next person wait. Like retail stores, we let one in and one out if we get full.”Once inside the gym, social distancing is a must. There are signs and markers that remind members about staying six feet apart.24 Hour Fitness has also stepped up with cleaning and disinfecting, shutting everything down for 30-minute periods throughout the day to do so.Some things will remain closed, such as spas, saunas, pools, and basketball courts. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It will take about a month to get the old Family Courthouse in downtown San Diego demolished and the area cleaned up, and once it’s gone, work will begin on what will replace it -- brand new affordable housing units.Piece by piece, the building that once heard divorce, custody, and other domestic issues was torn down. In its place will be a new eight-story building with 120 affordable housing units at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Cedar Street.While it’s been vacant, it was used as a temporary shelter for migrant families seeking asylum. Soon it will become home to senior citizens and other families.To be eligible for this affordable housing, a household must make less than 60% of the area median Income. For San Diego, according to the San Diego County website, it is less than ,000 for one person.County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said the location plays a big part in this project.“Everyone one wants affordable housing as long as it's not near them, but we know this is where housing needs to go. This location is in an urban environment in a downtown setting along transit corridors, walking distance to services is where we need to go,” Fletcher said.After the building is demolished, the next step in this project will be to get community input on the design of the unit.
