The Postal Service says it is facing “historic volumes” going into its busiest shipping week of the year. While Tuesday marks the final day the Post Office recommends shipping packages via ground in time for Christmas, the USPS says there are still a number of options for customers hoping to get their packages to loved ones by Dec. 25.In an effort to assist customers, the USPS says it is enacting a number of measures in hopes of ensuring timely deliveries. Those measures include:Expanded holiday retail hours in select locationsExpanded package delivery window — delivery in morning, afternoon, and early evening where volume warrantsExpanded operational capacity with new equipmentLease extra vehicles as needed to expedite deliveriesFor customers in the continental US, the USPS recommends the following mailing and shipping deadlines for expected delivery by Dec. 25 to most US addresses.Dec. 15 — USPS Retail Ground serviceDec. 18 — APO/FPO/DPO (except ZIP Code 093) USPS Priority Mail Express serviceDec. 18 — First-Class Mail service (including greeting cards)Dec. 18 — First-class packages (up to 15.99 ounces)Dec. 19 — Priority Mail serviceDec. 23 — Priority Mail Express serviceUSPS notes that only the Priority Mail Express service is a guarantee, and the other deadlines are merely recommendations. “We thank our customers for their continued support, and we are committed to making sure gifts and cards are delivered on time to celebrate the holidays,” said Kristin Seaver, Chief Retail and Delivery Officer of the Postal Service. “We also thank our 644,000 employees who are working tirelessly throughout these unique conditions to ensure the delivery of holiday gifts and greetings."Heading into the holidays, USPS service reported significant slowdowns. For the months of July, August and September, USPS reported single-piece first-class mail fell below its annual benchmarks, and past performance. The Justice Department is preventing Senate investigators from interviewing two top FBI officials who could provide first-hand testimony over the firing of former FBI Director James Comey, the latest sign that Special Counsel Robert Mueller could be investigating the circumstances around the firing, officials tell CNN.The previously undisclosed turf war comes as the Senate judiciary committee has not yet given assurances to the special counsel's office that it could have unfettered access to the transcript of the interview it conducted last week with the President's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., saying that the full Senate must first authorize the release of the information to Mueller's team. 709

The midterm elections brought a lot of new firsts, with a record number of women and new minorities serving in office. Supporters are calling it a “rainbow wave.”Minorities of all ages, ethnicities and faiths will now have a voice in Congress. A sweeping 30 seats in the House were snagged, including one by first time Democratic candidate and former Navy commander Elaine Lorea, who flipped her district in Virginia blue.Voters in Michigan and Minnesota elected the first Muslim women into Congress. In Kansas and New Mexico, the nation’s very first Native American women were elected to join the ranks. But it's not just Democratic women shaking up trends. Republican women are making history too.Marsha Blackburn is now the first female Senator in Tennessee. Kristi Noem, the first female governor in South Dakota, also made history. And rounding out the blue and red hues in the rainbow wave is the governor-elect from Colorado.Jared Polis' voters surged the polls, electing him as the first LGBTQ state leader in the Mile High. He is the first publicly gay candidate to be elected as governor in the U.S.The midterms was a melting pot of genders and backgrounds, adding to state government and the new House majority. 1228

The House recently passed a massive infrastructure and transportation bill, with .5 trillion in projects over the next five years. Included in the bill is the Hot Cars Act, which never passed in 2019. It would require all new cars to come with technology that can detect when a child is left in the backseat when the vehicle isn’t running. So far in 2020, at least seven children have died after being left in hot vehicles. On average, 39 children under the age of 15 die each year from heatstroke after being left in a vehicle, according to the National Safety Council.Wednesday also marks 12 years since Miles Harrison made that fatal mistake with his newly adopted son, Chase.“I was the guy, that was the same guy, that made fun of me. I was that guy. It could never happen to me. I’m too smart. I’m successful. My wife and I worked out a system. It’s one of the first times I’ve done it. And so, on this particular day, I was supposed to drop Chase off at day care and then go into the office,” said Harrison.Except, Harrison never got off at the exit for the day care. Instead, he went to work as usual, parked his SUV, worked all day, went to lunch and then at 5 p.m., a colleague came to him with a strange question.“They said, ‘hey do you have a doll in your car?’ And I go, ‘a doll?’ And then a sinking feeling. I run out to my SUV and I grab him out of his car seat and I’m screaming, ‘oh God no! Oh God no! Not Chase! Oh God.’”Harrison's 21-month-old Chase died of a heat stroke in his car seat.Eventually, Harrison was questioned by police.“I just said, ‘I killed my son.’ I just said, ‘I did and I didn't remember.’”He was charged with involuntary manslaughter, went to trial and was found not guilty. But Harrison says it didn't matter.“There were several times that I thought about taking my own life,” he said. “I just couldn't take it and I was so angry with myself and ashamed of what I had done.”The situation brought international consequences. Harrison and his wife had adopted Chase from a Russian orphanage. After his death and in retaliation for other political issues, Russia passed a law in Chase's Russian name banning U.S. citizens from adopting.Harrison’s story lead to an award-winning article called "Fatal Distraction" and a documentary "To the Moon and Back."Harrison and his wife channeled their pain into advocacy, pushing for the "Hot Cars Act." it would require all new vehicles to come with an alarm system that goes off if someone was in the backseat when the engine is turned off.The requirement is now part of the new transportation bill just passed by the House, but the Senate doesn't appear ready to pass it, leaving Harrison to continue on his crusade.“Children are dying in hot cars and it can be easily stopped. All you have to do is vote yes,” he said. 2809

The plane behind Lion Air's crash off Indonesia was one of Boeing's newest and most advanced jets. It was just two months old and with 800 hours under its belt, so experts are baffled as to what exactly caused the 737 MAX 8 to crash. While no information has been released yet as to why the brand-new plane crashed into the sea 13 minutes after takeoff,?FlightRadar24 has published data that shows the plane behaving erratically during takeoff. When a plane would normally be ascending in the first few minutes of flight, the Lion Air jet experienced a 726-foot drop over 21 seconds.Aviation expert Philip Butterworth-Hayes told CNN that the data was unusual -- especially since takeoffs like this are typically controlled by the plane's automatic systems."This doesn't fit an automatic flight profile," Butterworth-Hayes said while studying the data. "Unless, the aircraft was trying to correct itself at the time for a number of reasons.""This shows an unusually unstable vertical flight profile," he added."Exactly at the same time as the speed increased there was an altitude dip, which meant that at that point there was quite some loss of control."The plane, which has only been in operation since August 15, was carrying 181 passengers as well as six cabin crew members and two pilots, bound for Pangkal Pinang on the Indonesian island of Bangka.Former US National Transportation Safety Board air crash investigator and CNN aviation analyst Peter Goelz told CNN the data clearly showed issues with both the speed and altitude of the plane."There is something obviously wrong in both the air speed and the altitude which would point to the flight control systems," he said. "These are fly-by-wire systems -- highly automated -- and pilots may not be able to troubleshoot failures in a timely manner." 1818
