EL CENTRO, Calif. (KGTV) - A man who sought treatment from Imperial Valley Ministries says the church felt more like "a cult." The man, who asked not to be identified, said church staff took his identification and welfare benefits and pressured other participants to panhandle for hours, echoing allegations in a newly unsealed federal indictment. Federal prosecutors have accused a dozen church leaders with luring vulnerable people with the promise of shelter and meals and forcing them to work.RELATED: DOJ: Church leaders held homeless against will in San Diego and other cities The man said he and his wife were homeless in 2015 when they came across a church recruiter outside a Tucson Walgreens. He said they entered the IVM program to receive substance abuse treatment but quickly became disturbed by what they saw. In an indictment unsealed Tuesday, federal prosecutors charged a dozen church leaders with conspiracy, forced labor, document servitude and benefits fraud. Prosecutors said the church officials, including former Pastor Victor Gonzalez, compelled mostly homeless people to panhandle up to nine hours a day, six days a week, for the financial benefit of the church leaders. The indictment also accuses the church leaders of holding participants in locked group homes against their will and coercing them to surrender welfare benefits. “These victims were held captive, stripped of their humble financial means, their identification, their freedom and their dignity," said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer in a statement Tuesday. The man said he and his wife spent about five days at the El Centro facility. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) – A firefighter was burned and one dog died in a house fire that erupted in Carlsbad Thursday afternoon. According to crews, the fire broke out on the 3900 block of James Drive around 1 p.m. The blaze started in the garage and quickly spread to the rest of the home. A firefighter received minor burns battling the blaze. A witness who was nearby when the fire started broke windows to help rescue one of the three dogs inside the home. One of the dogs was able to leap out of a window while a second was rescued by firefighters and revived with oxygen. A third dog was unable to be revived and died due to its injuries. At this time, it's unknown what caused the fire. 704
With dwindling resources and a lack of medical supplies, health care providers around the country are concerned about handling the surge in COVID-19 patients.But behind the scenes, nonprofits like Direct Relief are working around the clock to help doctors and nurses on the frontlines of the pandemic.Headquartered in Santa Barbara, California, the nonprofit responds to disasters every day of the year.But longtime employees like Andrew MacCalla sensed early on that this one was unlike the rest.“Back in January, when we got asked to send personal protective gear, like masks and gowns to China – where it’s mostly all made – we started questioning, this is something different," she said.MacCalla is vice president of Emergency Response at Direct Relief. He says the requests were strange because China doesn’t usually ask them for help.“But pretty quickly we realized that they were truly stocked out, this was something that was growing rapidly,” said MacCalla. The nonprofit has one of the largest N-95 stockpiles in the country, but their supply is quickly being depleted as they ship out thousands a day.Two weeks ago, they had about 500,000 masks left, and now they’re down to around 250,000.But as the situation improves in China, they’re hopeful orders placed on hold will begin to go out in a few weeks.The nonprofit is working on getting ahead of the crisis, ramping up stockpiles of oxygen concentrators, medications, and ventilators.Since the outbreak began, Direct Relief’s sent supplies to 31 countries, including over 1 million masks, 48,000 gowns, and over 1.6 million gloves.“These situations can feel so overwhelming, and it feels like it’s out of control and there’s nothing we can do to stop it. But really there is something we can do to stop it. We have a robust supply here,” said senior emergency response manager Cydney Justman.With every shipment, health workers receive not only supplies, but the encouragement to keep fighting.
