Lawrence County, Indiana, prosecutors filed criminal charges Thursday against a Mitchell Community Schools nurse for stealing students' medication and ingesting it herself.Carol Sanders is charged with felony official misconduct, felony neglect of a dependent and five counts of misdemeanor theft.Police arrested Sanders Thursday and she was booked into the Lawrence County Jail.A staff member at Burris Elementary launched an investigation earlier this month after medication belonging to students went missing.Sanders admitted to stealing amphetamines, Ritalin, Zyrtec and other medications from students at Burris Elementary and Hatfield Elementary.The school nurse also admitted to replacing some of the students’ medications with baby aspirin.Sanders said she stole the medications between February 25 and March 7 of 2019, court records show.“Carol stated she stole the medication because she is an addict,” read the probable cause affidavit. “Carol admitted to needing help with her addiction.”Carol Sanders also admitted that this is not the first time she’s been terminated from a nursing job for stealing and ingesting medication.Sanders said she omitted that information to the school district during the hiring process.Superintendent Dr. Mike Wilcox said the district performed an expanded criminal history check and no prior history was reported.Wilcox provided the following statement. “The Mitchell Community School Family is deeply concerned about this event. This, or any other, issue that forces us to question the safety of any Mitchell student immediately becomes our top priority. Our outstanding school administrators and school resource officer responded firmly, fairly, and in a timely manner. The parents of our students effected by this event, who were contacted immediately and have shown remarkable support. Mrs. Sanders is no longer employed by Mitchell Community Schools. She has submitted her letter of resignation, The Mitchell team of students, families, community members, and educators will continue to analyze current practices and collaborate on best solutions in regard to all Mitchell students."Sanders is scheduled for an initial hearing in Lawrence County on March 25. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — An 11-month-old Tennessee boy left in a bathtub without supervision has died and his mother is facing charges of murder and abuse after telling authorities she left the child to have some “me time." A hospital spokeswoman says the boy died Friday morning. An arrest warrant says 32-year-old Lindsee Leonardo told police she left the boy and a 23-month-old sibling in the tub Wednesday so she could smoke a cigarette and have some “me time." James Wiseman, the freshman basketball star for the University of Memphis who accepted payment in 2017 from his future college coach for his family's housing, has been suspended for 11 additional games and has been ordered to pay ,500. Wiseman has already missed one game, totally his suspension to 12 games.Collegiate athletes are barred from making money off their name, image and likeness, and universities compensate basketball players with free tuition, room and board. It is unknown if Wiseman will be able to come up with the funds necessary to continue his collegiate career following his suspension. Wiseman's punishment came as a result of his college coach, former NBA star Penny Hardaway, giving Wiseman's family ,500 to help pay for Wiseman's family to move to Memphis. Hardaway was then the coach of an AAU squad in Memphis, and wanted to Wiseman to join his team.A year later in 2018, Hardaway was given the top job at the University of Memphis. But it was Hardaway's past connection to Memphis as a donor that made the payment to Wiseman improper in the eye's of the NCAA. After being ruled ineligible entering the 2019 season, Wiseman sued to be reinstated before the season. A judge issued an injunction, legally forcing Memphis to play Wiseman despite him being ineligible. After playing three games, Wiseman dropped the suit. The NCAA said that Wiseman playing three games despite being ineligible was considered as part of the penalty. "The benefit was impermissible because of Hardaway’s status as a Memphis booster," the NCAA said in a statement. "Hardaway had made donations to the school in the past, including million to help build the Penny Hardaway Athletic Hall of Fame at the school. Boosters cannot provide financial assistance to prospective student-athletes, their family members or friends unless that assistance is generally available to other members of the student body and is not given based on athletics ability."Memphis said that it will appeal the NCAA's decision.The ,500 Wiseman has been ordered to pay will go to a charity.Wiseman is considered one of the top prospects for next year's NBA Draft. 2164
