But who’s really benefiting from these big investments?It’s a similar story for Georgia’s baseball stadium."It's about a 2 million facility, SunTrust Park,” says Derek Schiller, president and CEO of the Atlanta Braves.Out of that 2 million, Schiller says roughly 0 million came straight from taxpayers in Cobb County, Georgia. It came after a measure approved by a five-person commission."They were elected by the community to represent them,” Schiller says.The total .1 billion project inside and outside the stadium was all part of a public-private package deal, and taxpayers like Georgia resident Anthony Sierra seem to be enjoying it."For everything I’ve seen lately, it's been a nice, little spot,” Sierra says.Sierra and his friend Brittany Reynolds say, overall, they're happy. However, they do question if their tax dollars could've been better spent.“I wasn't aware of the amount of money that went into it, Reynolds says."There's so much other things your money could go towards, like education."While this may seem like a game with public funds, Schiller says the long-term goal is to make it a home run for all, saying the stadium provides “great economic vitality” to the community."And within a few short years, the taxpayer will actually make money off of this entire arrangement,” Schiller says.He says the future revenue will eventually be funneled back into local needs, like education.“ million of that goes to the Cobb County school system,” Schiller says.Whether you think this is a win or loss for taxpayers, both sides agree on one thing."I think it’s an eyeopener for folks to make sure they're being politically savvy,” Sierra says.In order to have a say on this stadium or any other, it's all about stepping up to the plate to vote.“I really do think it's important for fans and constituents to know what we are doing with their funds and how their dollars are put to use,” Schiller says. 2171

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Protesters gathered at the La Mesa Police Department Tuesday evening, once again calling for more transparency and accountability from the department. The protest came just a few days after the department announced that former LMPD officer Matt Dages was no longer employed with the department. Dages was the officer caught on video during the arrest of Amaurie Johnson in May. The charges against Johnson were later dropped. Activists say the department's statement about Dages' employment was vague. They want the former officer charged and arrested.In a press conference hours before the protest, Johnson said he wants equality and will keep fighting for change until it happens. The protest remained peaceful; officers did detain a counter-protester but later told ABC 10News he was released after determining no crime had been committed. 877

Larry King has gone public with a recent cancer diagnosis.In a statement to CNN on Thursday, King's rep said the legendary talk show host was "diagnosed with stage 1 Adenocarcinoma, the most common type of lung cancer, through a routine chest examination.""He immediately underwent a successful surgery to remove the upper lobe and lymph node," the rep added. (KGTV) -- La Mesa businesses that were damaged or looted during protests that turned violent in late May can receive financial assistance through a special fund.According to the East County Economic Development Council, the La Mesa Disaster Recovery Fund “was created by the San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce Foundation to help businesses damaged or destroyed in the aftermath of opportunistic violence and looting following peaceful Black Lives Matter demonstrations in La Mesa.”The fund raised ,000 on its first day, and then 0,000 by the second day. The fund has now reached nearly 0,000.Fund organizers said they want to be “fast, fair, and equitable” with the distribution of money to the affected businesses.A flat stipend amount will be distributed to each verified business starting the week of June 29. Three-quarters of the money will be distributed during this Phase 1.The remaining 25 percent will be distributed during Phase 2 (no exact date given), with the intention of closing the fund by the end of July.To be eligible to receive funding, businesses are being asked to upload photos of damage and include verification of the address and ownership through an online form.
