Sears is getting serious about selling Kenmore.The struggling retailer announced Monday that it had formed a "special committee" to explore the sale of its in-house appliance brand.The move comes less than a month after Sears CEO Eddie Lampert wrote a letter to the board urging it to sell the brand. He offered to buy it himself if necessary, along with other assets.There is a good chance that Lampert will be the one buying Kenmore.Through his hedge fund, ESL Investments, Lampert owns a majority of shares in Sears Holding, the company that owns the Sears and Kmart chains.Sears has been exploring a possible sale of Kenmore and other assets for a number of years but never found a buyer. But this week it escalated its efforts by forming the "special committee," retaining counsel and bringing on an investment bank.The announcement was enough to briefly lift Sears shares 19% in early trading Monday, before they retreated to more modest gains of about 6%.Shares are still near historic lows. The retailer has admitted "substantial doubts" exist that it will be able to remain in business.Lampert has insisted that the company is on a path to return to profitability. But it is in need of cash and has been closing stores, cutting costs and getting creditors to agree to a longer repayment schedule on its debt. Because of that delayed repayment schedule, Sears was judged to be in default of some of its loans earlier this year.In early 2017 Sears sold its Craftsman tool brand to Stanley Black & Decker in a deal valued at 0 million. SEATTLE (AP) — Prosecutors plan to decide on charges against the man who hit two protesters with his car while driving on a Seattle freeway that was closed for Black Lives Matter demonstrations. One of the protesters was killed. Police say Dawit Kelete hit two people at about 1:40 a.m. Saturday. Summer Taylor, a 24-year-old veterinary clinic worker, suffered critical injuries and died Saturday night. Diaz Love was hospitalized in serious condition. The King County prosecutor's office said it was reviewing investigation documents and would decide on charges by Wednesday afternoon. The driver is being held on a .2 million bail. 643

SARASOTA Co., Fla. — A brawl between two moms at a school bus stop landed both in the hospital.One of those mothers was Tiffani Cruz. She was recently released from the hospital.“It was self-defense over an incident that made no sense," she said.While North Port Police say it started over an argument about parenting, Cruz claims she and the other mother have had issues before. She says two weeks ago, she confronted that mom for yelling at another child at the bus stop. But Tuesday morning, their verbal arguments went too far.“My heart was racing!” said Eithan Cruz, who is of no relation to Tiffani Cruz. The child and his brother, Bairon Velazquez, witnessed the fight from the back window of their school bus.“Her face was bleeding and stuff,” Eithan said.“I looked away," Bairon said..Cruz admits she hit the other mom with her mug. Police have not identified the other woman. “I went to run and that’s when she picked up the glass, ran at me and stabbed me twice in my arm, once at my wrist and in back of my shoulder," Cruz said.Both parents ended up in the hospital, but paramedics airlifted the other woman to the hospital with a serious cut to her throat.“She got this close to my face nudged me with her nose and when she nudged me with her nose— it was her fist going up so my fist was going up," Cruz said when asked why she felt she acted in self-defense.Sarasota County Schools is offering counselors after several dozen elementary-aged students witnessed the violent fight.“I regret the whole incident, there’s no reason it should have happened. SANTEE, Calif. (CNS) - A San Diego County Sheriff's Department employee was behind bars Thursday morning on suspicion of burglary and identity theft, authorities said.Estella Velez, a 54-year-old licensed vocational nurse at the Vista Detention Facility, and her alleged accomplice, 44-year-old Raul Rios, were taken into custody Wednesday, sheriff's Lt. Nancy Blanco said.The pair is suspected of stealing a woman's purse in the 5500 block of Mission Road in Bonsall on July 10, then using the victim's credit card at several locations in North County, Blanco said.Rios and Velez were also seen on video surveillance in two attempted commercial burglaries in the 1700 block of East Vista Way in Vista on July 21 and 23, the lieutenant said.Velez was booked into the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility in Santee and Rios was booked into San Diego Central Jail, according to jail records. They both face multiple felony counts of burglary, conspiracy and theft.Velez was being held in lieu of 5,000 bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Aug. 14. (KGTV) — Palomar College announced Friday that the school's police academy will no longer train cadets on how to perform a carotid restraint hold.The restraint will not be taught or used in the academy setting, according to Palomar's Director of Public Safety Programs Michael Andrews.“Effective last week, the tactic is no longer being employed or used in the academy setting, period,” Andrews said. “We won’t even use it as an example. It will just simply be erased from training.”RELATED: San Diego County law enforcement agencies that have stopped using carotid restraintPalomar's decision comes after several agencies through San Diego County ended the use of the restraint technique amid demonstrations against police violence.On June 18, the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training approved changes to its "Arrest and Control" learning unit to remove the training and use of the hold.Andrews adds that the school is in the process of changing its academy curriculum to align with the learning unit's changes.“Palomar took a stance, and we were successful,” Andrews said. “There are many other policing tactics which, when employed properly, can be productive.
