Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie remains hospitalized, but called a New Jersey newspaper editor from his hospital bed Monday morning, reportedly sounding raspy but not coughing — and fiery as ever.The former governor has struggled with asthma all his life, and announced on Twitter Saturday that he would check himself in to Morristown Medical Center on the advice of his doctors.Christie was seen outdoors in the White House Rose Garden hugging people without a mask last week. He also came in close contact with President Donald Trump and his staff when helping to prepare him for last week's debate."No one was wearing masks in the room when we were prepping the president during that period of time," Christie told Good Morning America. "The group was about five or six people in total."Monday, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy wished his predecessor a speedy recovery."He and I have had private communications," said Murphy. "He is in our prayers and he knows that we're here for him."The state is currently working to contact trace 206 people who attended a Trump fundraiser at his private golf club in Bedminster last week. Trump and his staff were there just hours before the president announced that he'd tested positive for COVID-19.The New Jersey Attorney General is now investigating whether the fundraiser violated state rules on social distancing. Many in attendance did not wear masks. But the Republican National Committee has insisted that face masks were provided and the event was in compliance.At Murphy's afternoon press briefing, he said the president and his staff acted recklessly by coming to New Jersey, knowing they had come in contact with someone who tested positive.“The actions leading up to and during this event have put lives at risk,” Murphy said.Some of the event attendees flew in from other parts of the country and have now scattered."This never should have happened," said the governor. Being a truck driver isn't the draw it used to be. At Excel Driver Services, they're grinding gears trying to figure out how to get more people behind the wheel of big rigs. “It's a big issue,” Excel owner Jason Emery said. “You've seen companies go out of business because they can't support growth because they can't get safe drivers to operate their equipment.” Emery says America has a major shortage of licensed truck drivers and the numbers support him. According to the American Trucking Associations, the industry was short more than 60,000 drivers in 2018 – that's almost a 20 percent increase from the year before. The ATA also reports a need to hire more than a million new drivers over the next decade to keep up with growing transportation demands. “There's a huge need for qualified truck drivers right now,” Emery said. “Every company in this town is looking for drivers right now.” Emery says the major reason for the decline is that many drivers are getting older and retiring. Now the industry is trying to attract younger drivers, people like Shelby Stennett – who is changing careers from a frack hand in the oil fields to a truck driver on the interstates. “As far as career-wise making that extra money and put that money in my pocket,” he said. “Being able to provide for myself and my family and my friends. It's important to me because I got to eat. I got to eat to survive.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the starting pay for a truck driver is ,000 per year. After a few years on the road, however, the ATA says drivers can easily make six figures driving an 18-wheeler. Despite the pay, this job isn't for everyone. Drivers can spend weeks on the road alone and sleep in their rigs. Now economists say fewer truck drivers on the road could end up costing you a lot more money. “For the last several years we've gotten used to free shipping and one-day shipping and give it to me right now,” said Christina Huber, Ph.D. a professor of economics at Metropolitan State University Denver. “Maybe that can't continue.” Huber says with more online shopping and fewer drivers to transport the goods, shipping costs could skyrocket. “If they're having trouble attracting drivers to the industry the only way to alleviate that shortage is to make it more attractive for them to enter,” she said. To attract more drivers, many companies are increasing pay. A tidal wave of information hits us daily from the moment we open our phone and computer, and when it comes to social media, spotting "fake" from "fact" before you share news and photos takes some work! "More people are getting their information through social media,” says Katy Byron, program director of MediaWise with the Poynter Institute. Byron points to a Stanford University study, explaining just how widespread the issue of deciphering fiction from non-fiction is among teens. "More than 80 percent of teenagers don't know the difference between a real news story and a native advertisement online," says Byron. This is why Poynter’s MediaWise program was created. "We want to reach 1 million teens by 2020," says Byron. The program uses teen fact checkers that post social media videos to help others to determine what is real and what’s not. The crusade of teens across the country are also helping others determine how to debunk misinformation. “I think this is something anyone can do right now,” Byron says. Byron says before sharing pictures and articles online, ask yourself these three questions: 1. Who's behind the information? 2. What is the evidence? 3. What do other sources say? "I hope that we reach as many kids as we can with the curriculum and what we are teaching on our social media channels, so that they'll take these skills with them throughout their lives," Byron says. 1417
