SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two San Diego area residents are among the contestants on Thursday evening's episode of the ABC miniature golf series "Holey Moley," including Avis Brown-Riley, who played in the 1988 U.S. Women's Open but missed the cut after two rounds."It was a spectacular and exhilarating experience, now I know what the movie stars experience while filming and one that I always treasure," she said of her miniature golf experience. "The Disney/ABC television production staff rolled out the red carpet and treated all the contestants like royalty. It was inspiring ... especially when the audience was rallying and cheering me along."She also tweeted the water she fell into was cold.Brown-Riley is a Chula Vista resident who is a member of the board of directors of the Southwestern College Foundation, serving as a goodwill ambassador for the community college. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A beloved comic book is making a comeback, 13 years after disappearing off the shelves.San Diego artist Dennis Caco created Max Boost! in 1998, the original Import Tuner racing comic. "I just love creation. Creation has always been my thing. I love being very creative, making things from something to nothing," said Caco. "We were ridiculed and made fun of, but the performance was there!" says Caco. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Traffic volume in the San Diego region was at its lowest point this year in April, and volume remains relatively low and speeds higher compared to 2019, according to an interactive map released Tuesday by the San Diego Association of Governments.The SANDAG Highway Hot Spots & Volumes Tracker measures weekday month-by-month vehicle miles traveled on local highways, including traffic speeds and average daily traffic volumes -- which, this year, reflect fewer cars on the road due to the pandemic. The data available on the tracker includes March through October 2020, and users can also compare current data to the same time in 2019. The SANDAG tracker is updated monthly."This new tool is intended to be a resource to assist community members and local leaders with current traffic data to make regional decisions," said Cynthia Burke, SANDAG director of research and program management. "The Highway Hot Spots & Volume Tracker Highway Hot Spots & Volumes Tracker has shown us that the greatest drop in traffic volumes this year were seen in April when we were down 44%, compared to the same time last year."The SANDAG tracker also shows that between June and October, traffic volumes hovered between 15% and 16% lower than compared to 2019.The number of vehicle miles traveled on eight local highways reflected that same trend. Data shows that in October, traffic remained lowest on State Route 163, which was down 29% compared to October 2019, and that State Route 78 and Interstate 805 were the closest to last year's figures at this time -- down 11% and 13%, respectively.The tracker offers multiple ways to interact with and explore the data, such as filtering to focus on points of interest and selecting data points in the chart to make simultaneous comparisons.SANDAG picked several San Diego region hotspots of particular interest, including Southbound Interstate 15 at Deer Springs Road, Southbound Interstate 5 at Manchester Avenue, Northbound I-805 at Governor Drive and Westbound State Route 52 at Mast Boulevard.Speed data at each of the hot spots during morning peak periods revealed that in October, speeds were up an average of about 6 mph compared to March.The largest increases were seen at Northbound I-805 at I-15 -- 13.7 mph faster in October -- and Westbound Interstate 8 at Waring Road -- 10.5 mph faster. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A couple of thieves hosted an unintentional comedy act after surveillance cameras captured them making a huge mess inside a Normal Heights salon. Salon Bordeaux is reaching a big milestone."We are getting ready to celebrate our 14th anniversary here on Adams Avenue," salon co-owner, Laura Price said. But Price in not quite ready to celebrate. "Somebody threw a rock through a window and climbed through," Price said. Just before 2:30 a.m. Friday, their surveillance cameras caught two people attempting a smash-and-grab at the salon. One of the men threw a rock through the side window and climbed through. The two headed straight to the counter. They pried open the cash drawer with a crowbar and took off. But not before one of them tripped over and broke the side table. He then realized he forgot his crowbar, so he climbed back in to get it, and hurried off.But Price said the joke's on them. "Fortunately, we do not keep any cash in the salon overnight, so they didn't get much, except for hopefully some injury from the glass," Price joked. This isn't their first break-in. Almost four years ago to the day, Salon Bordeaux was one of 15 small businesses in Normal Heights to be a victim of burglary. Back then, criminals got away with ,000, their client appointment book, and computer."We learned a lot from the first incident, and this time we were ready," Price said. Since then, they installed multiple security cameras. They never leave cash overnight and instilled new safety practices. So this time, the clumsy thieves made off with nothing. "We just want to spread the word and make sure that other businesses are as prepared as we were this time. It could've been a lot worse. None of the staff was hurt, and really, all we have to do is deal with the glass and replacing it," Price said. San Diego Police has not made any arrests at this time. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Zoo Safari Park's youngest southern white rhino began integrating with the rest of the park's rhino herd Wednesday, meeting a rhino other than his mother for the first time since his birth 10 weeks ago.Edward and his mother, Victoria, have remained sequestered from the rest of the herd since his birth in July to allow the two to bond and ensure he builds weight and stamina. The calf's weight has nearly quadrupled since then and he has only entered the Safari Park's rhino enclosure with Victoria.Edward met Helene, an adult female southern white rhino, after she sparred with Victoria, who was very protective of her calf, according to the zoo's animal care staff. They will continue introducing him to the rest of the Safari Park's crash of rhinos as he gets larger and older.RELATED: San Diego Zoo's baby southern white rhino charges into life at the park"While Victoria knows the other rhinos, Edward has only observed them from a distance," Safari Park Lead Keeper Jonnie Capiro said. "It's time to get Edward acclimated to his crash. We chose to have Helene meet him first, as she is closely bonded with Victoria."Edward is the 99th southern white rhino calf born at the Safari Park and the first such calf to be born through artificial insemination in North America. His birth represents a step toward the zoo's longer-term goal of recovering the northern white rhino, a distant relative of the southern white rhino. Only two northern white rhinos still exist on the planet and both are female.Zoo officials plan to use stem cells and preserved northern white rhino cells to birth a northern white rhino calf within 10-20 years.
