The number of empty apartments available to rent in Manhattan soared to its highest level in recent history this summer.There are more than 13,000 apartments on the market in the heart of New York City, according to a real estate report from Douglas Elliman and Miller Samuel. The group says this is the most inventory they have seen in Manhattan in 14 years of keeping track.July’s spike of 13,117 available units is an increase over June’s inventory of 10,789.For context, July 2020’s inventory is nearly 122 percent higher than last year; in July 2019 there were roughly 5,900 available apartments.The group also says July had the biggest year-over-year drop in median rent price in nearly nine years. The median rental price for an apartment in Manhattan, including anything from a studio to a 3-bedroom, was ,320 in July, and was ,595 in July 2019.The report also tracks the Queens and Brooklyn rental market. Both saw huge spikes in inventory, but none as large as Manhattan.Moving help website HireaHelper.com released results of a recent study on 2020 moving trends.Their study also found high-rent cities like San Francisco and New York saw more people leaving than moving in; both cities had 80 percent more people moving out of the area than moving in. The grandmother of Stephon Clark, the young black man shot and killed by Sacramento Police last week, pleaded Monday in a passionate speech for justice for her grandson."They didn't have to kill him like that. They didn't have to shoot him that many times," Sequita Thompson said through tears."Why didn't you just shoot him in the arm, shoot him in the leg, send the dogs, send a Taser. Why? Why? Y'all didn't have to do that," she added.The tearful plea came as part of a press conference with Benjamin Crump, an attorney representing the Clark family. Crump said the family is preparing for an independent autopsy of Clark's body."We will stand up for Stephon, we will speak for Stephon, we will fight for Stephon, until we get justice for Stephon," Crump said."I want justice for my baby. I want justice for Stephon Clark. Please, give us justice," Thompson said.The press conference came a week after Clark, 22, was shot and killed?in his grandmother's Sacramento backyard by officers who believed he was pointing a gun at them, according to police. No weapon was found at the scene. The only item discovered was a cell phone, police said.Officers fired 20 shots, hitting Clark multiple times, police told CNN affiliate KOVR.Crump was retained by Clark's family late last week. People need to be responsible pet owners in this community," says State Attorney Dave Aronberg."The animals should be a valued part of your family and they should be a part of your plan," says Animal Care and Control Capt. Dave Walesky. More than 50 dogs and 15 cats were surrendered to Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control. Around 38 other dogs, left to fend for themselves, mostly in the Glades area.  "Many of them were loose inside fenced yards, some were loose in the community where they just got turned loose or some were tied and left in small cages," says Walesky. "One of the dogs was left tied to a structure with a bowl of water and a bunch of bananas." It's not just sad, it's a crime. "And there is no excuse for leaving your pet behind to die. We are going to hold accountable those who we can prove left their dogs behind in the storm," says Aronberg.   1261

The mother of a 14-year-old boy with autism, who was traumatized after a run-in with a Buckeye, Arizona officer, says she never expected that what happened to her son would spark a national discussion. Diane Leibel also said see police body camera video was also one of the hardest things she’s ever had to do. “It was excruciating honestly,” she said. “I’ve never heard my son scream like that before. I don’t understand how it even got there.” On July 19, a Buckeye Officer named David Grossman mistook Connor Leibel for a drug user. As he drove by a quiet neighborhood park, Grossman claimed he saw Connor putting his hand up to his face, giving him reasonable suspicion to handcuff and detain the boy. It turned out Connor was using a small string to “stim” – a coping mechanism common for people with autism.  Phoenix-based KNXV broke the story about the video on Monday afternoon. Since, reports about the incident have appeared on every local Phoenix station, some national shows, and it’s even been picked up by the New York Times. The reason: It’s sparking a debate about how officers deal and confront individuals with mental illness, other disabilities, and autism. “We were afraid that our child would be ridiculed or that something would happen somewhere along the line,” Danielle Leibel said. "I didn’t think it would be from a police officer.” COMPLAINT DISMISSEDThe day after the incident, Leibel filed a citizen’s complaint with the police department against Grossman, a “drug-recognition expert.” Weeks later, officials up and down Grossman’s chain of command cleared him of using unreasonable force and that he had reasonable suspicion to detain the boy. After the final decision, no one from Buckeye police notified Leibel, she said. “I’m every emotion I can think of. That’s my baby who was manhandled like that,” Leibel said. “I do see that would be reasonable to approach him if he saw him putting something to his face….But after he showed him what he had, that should have diffused the situation. It should end there.” Parents of other children with autism have told KNXV they are horrified by what happened and how the incident was handled by the officer. However, some people are also blaming Leibel’s parents and his caregiver for leaving him alone. His mother’s response: “He’s a 14-year-old. He’s higher functioning. He’s not a danger to himself or others…He plays in that park every week, and we’ve never had an issue.“I’ve never, in his 14 years, had an issue or have anybody suspect he was on drugs,” Leibel said. After the incident, Buckeye Police announced they are working on creating a voluntary register for people with disabilities, mental illness, and autism. They also proposed that those individuals wear bracelets. The registry would allow officer to look up specific information on people the come into contact with. Leibel and other parents of children with autism told KNXV they were disgusted by the idea. “I think it’s disgusting that you have to label someone with a disability with a special mark so they don’t have to live in fear of being hurt by police,” she said. “How would that have changed (the situation with my son) at all.” A parent of another child with autism who lives in Buckeye told KNXV the idea reminded him of the "Holocaust."  3418

The lawyer for one of the women suing President Donald Trump for defamation is seeking recordings of "The Apprentice" from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.Former "Apprentice" contestant Summer Zervos filed a lawsuit against Trump in January 2017, in which she alleged that Trump defamed her in 2016 after she said he sexually assaulted her in 2007.Her lawyer, Mariann Wang, is also seeking hotel records from the Beverly Hills Hotel."We are gathering evidence that will prove that (the) defendant lied when he falsely denigrated Ms. Zervos and denied sexually assaulting her," Wang said.MGM owns the archives of "The Apprentice" and Wang wants the company to hand over all documents, video or audio that feature Zervos or Trump talking about Zervos and any recording in which Trump speaks of women in a sexual or inappropriate manner.Zervos' attorney also wants to depose an MGM representative to inquire about how recordings of "The Apprentice" are stored and maintained, who has access to them, and when if ever they were transferred or destroyed.The subpoena asks for "(a)ll video and audio recordings that include Donald J. Trump talking or commenting on the female candidates or female potential candidates of any season of The Apprentice in any sexual or inappropriate manner, including without limitation any statements or comments by Donald J. Trump concerning any female candidate's or potential candidate's body or body parts and/or his sexual or romantic desire or intention concerning any female candidate or potential candidate."MGM declined to comment.Wang also wants records from the Beverly Hills Hotel of any stay by Trump from 2005 through 2009 and documents related to his longtime bodyguard Keith Schiller, his longtime assistant Rhona Graff or Zervos.She also asks for, "(a)ll video recordings that depict the entrances, common areas, or bungalow areas of the Beverly Hills Hotel during the month of December 2007."The communications director for the Beverly Hills Hotel, Brittany Williams, confirmed the hotel was subpoenaed."I can confirm we received a subpoena but we are not providing any further comment at this time," Williams said.Wang has set a May 31 deadline for both companies to comply with the subpoena for the material requested.The New York Times first reported on the subpoenas Wednesday.T 2322
