A non-profit in California has developed a way to capture poachers who snatch sea turtle eggs - building lookalike eggs with GPS trackers constructed inside them.According to research published Monday in the journal Current Biology, the InvestEGGator is a 3D-printed life-like turtle egg that can be tracked as far away as 137 kilometers (85 miles)."It replicates the appearance, weight, and feel of a real turtle egg. It is easily deployed at low risk to investigators, can be programmed and monitored remotely using web-based and smartphone applications, and is a low cost, allowing for deployment of many units at once," said the Ventura-based Paso Pacífico, the non-profit that developed the eggs.The decoy eggs are placed in real nests alongside real eggs, which are monitored and mapped every time they are moved, the non-profit said.The research showed that the decoy eggs provide a signal once every hour."Using data provided by the decoys, we identified trafficking routes and on two occasions properties of potential interest to law enforcement," researchers said in the journal. A mother of a 9-month-old baby is upset after she says her daughter received a second degree burn while she was in a daycare in Detroit on Friday.Her daughter attended Lafayette Day Care Center on E. Lafayette Street in Detroit.It was a seemingly normal day for Sabrina Shellman when she picked up her kids at the center Friday afternoon. It wasn’t until she got home, she noticed a burn her daughter’s leg.The family took the baby to the doctors, filed a police report and then contacted Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit.“It’s frustrating, it’s heartbreaking, it makes me really, really angry,” Shellman said.When she picked up her kids, 9-month-old Jayla and 4-year-old Jayden, she said no one told her about the injury.It wasn’t until she changed the baby that she said she noticed something was wrong.“That’s when I noticed the burn on the back of her leg,” she said. “No one bothered to call me. No one informed me of this at all.”Sabrina rushed Jayla to the doctors, who told her it’s a second degree burn. She immediate called the daycare.Shellman said a manager said the injury did not happen at the daycare. The mother said she thinks they are trying to cover it up.“My daughter received a burn," she said. "They should be ashamed of themselves, definitely, they should be ashamed.”Sabrina asked her son if he saw what happened, he says one of the caregivers did it.“Spilled oatmeal on her leg, that’s what he told me,” she said.Now, Sabrina said baby Jayla has been traumatized.“She’s screaming, she’s yelling, she won’t stop crying.”The daycare manager didn’t want to talk on-camera, but said they don’t know how the baby got burned and claims it didn’t happen at the daycare.Sabrina says that’s a lie.“Mistakes happen but the fact that you all tried to cover it up and didn’t bother to call me that says a lot about them,” she said.The most recent report from the state shows the daycare has no violations. A new report from the CDC and Rhode Island shows COVID-19 rates below one percent in childcare facilities with young children this summer. They also found a low rate of secondary transmission among these facilities, with 15 percent of coronavirus cases resulting in transmission to at least one other person.“The critical thing here is to build the confidence of teachers, the confidence of parents,” said Dr. Robert Redfield, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “This study provides data, that when things are done with vigilance in partnership with the public health community, you can, in fact, in a complex situation like child care ... you can reopen child care" and have low rates of secondary transmission. The study tracked coronavirus cases at childcare facilities in Rhode Island this summer. On June 1, the state was seeing a decline in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations, and allowed childcare programs to re-open after a 3-month closure.In order to reopen, the facility had to submit a plan to the state for approval that included reduced enrollment, a cohort of no more than 20 people including kids and staff, universal use of masks for adults, and daily symptom screening of adults and kids.Roughly 75 percent of licensed center and home-based childcare facilities were approved to reopen, caring for 18,945 children.Between June 1 and July 31, there were 101 possible child care-associated COVID-19 cases identified at the facility level; among those, 49 were excluded because they had a negative COVID-19 test.Of the remaining 52 confirmed and probable cases, 30 were children; that is roughly .16 percent of the 18,945 children in childcare in Rhode Island this summer. There were 20 teachers and 2 parents who are among the confirmed or probable cases.Cases were confirmed an average of two days after specimen collection.Contact tracing led to the quarantine of 687 children and 166 staff members; that’s roughly 3.6 percent of the total children in Rhode Island care facilities this summer being impacted by quarantine efforts.The cases happened at 29 of the 666 childcare facilities, in 20 of the facilities, there was a single coronavirus case and no transmission. Five of the 29 programs, 15 percent, had two to five cases.The remaining four coronavirus cases may or may not have had secondary transmission. Health officials state those facilities were breaking protocol by moving members of a cohort around to other classrooms, delayed reporting of symptoms, etc. that made it difficult to track.The CDC warns these results were only possible because of decreasing COVID-19 rates in the state, and the community effort to slow the spread of coronavirus. This includes wearing masks and practicing social distancing when around other people.“I understand masks can be uncomfortable to wear and hard to remember to bring when you go out,” Dr. Redfield said. “Schools are not islands in and of themselves, they are connected to the communities around them.”The study says maintaining stable staffing was one of the most difficult things; needing to cover teacher breaks, vacations, etc. while still maintaining the smaller cohort sizes.They recommend additional funding to continue with the smaller class sizes. 3271

A visitor to Yellowstone National Park was injured by a grizzly bear while hiking near Old Faithful on Monday.According to a park press release, the 37-year-old woman from Missouri was hiking alone on the Fairy Falls Trail when she encountered two grizzly bears "at very close range."One of the bears knocked the woman down, and she suffered a scratch on her thigh. The woman also received minor injuries to her face from the fall. She declined medical attention.The park said the woman attempted to use bear spray during the encounter."From the injured person's statements, this appears to be a typical case of a mother grizzly bear protecting her offspring following a close-range encounter," said Kerry Gunther, a bear management biologist. "Because this bear was displaying natural protective behavior for its cub, no action will be taken against the bear. Several trails in the area will be closed to give the grizzly family group time to clear from the area."Monday's incident marks the first time a bear has injured a visitor in Yellowstone in 2020. The last time a bear injured a visitor in the park was in June 2019 when a black bear bit into an occupied tent and bruised a woman's thigh.Following the incident, the Fairy Falls Trail was cleared of hikers.
