The cost of education can last a lifetime, as many people into their 50s and 60s are finding out.According to Federal Reserve, 2.8 million people in the U.S. over the age of 60 are sitting on some amount of student debt, a number that quadrupled from 700,000 in 2005 and continues to grow.“This is really a sledgehammer against the older generation in more ways than one,” says Alan Collinge, creator of online advocacy group for borrowers Student Loan Justice.Collinge has been campaigning for change surrounding laws for student loans since 2005, after trying to figure out a way to pay off his own crippling college costs.“It’s a really devastating phenomenon, and I’m seeing it destroy, literally wreck, families across the country,” Collinge says. In 2018, Americans over the age of 50 owed more than 0 billion in student loans, up from billion in 2004, according to the Federal Reserve.And most can’t afford to pay, forcing retirees to continue to work well past retirement age.“The problem has become exponentially worse since we began this fight 13 years ago,” he says.In Collinge’s group, he hears stories from people ages 18 to 80 years old, who can hardly afford to live, let alone retire.“The federal government can and does garnish Social Security from seniors as a result of their student loans, so we’re hearing stories from people who at the end of the month they’re unable to buy medicine even unable to pay their rent,” Collinge says, “What kind of country does this to their senior people?”On top of that, Collinge says more people in their 50s and 60s are taking out Parent Plus loans to help their children and grandchildren pay for college, which adds to the financial burden.“This is a nationally threatening phenomenon,” he said. Through his advocacy group, he tries to offer help and resources to folks who are struggling. He’s currently on a road tour talking to legislators around the country, encouraging them to reform borrower laws, expand their rights and get colleges to crack down on sky-high tuition costs.“Student loans are the only loans in the country not subject to bankruptcy, why is that? The numbers are just getting so astonishing now, I can only hope that the new Congress puts this issue front and center and doesn’t get distracted by the palace intrigue because this is a problem affecting real people it just won’t wait any longer.” 2413

The Cambridge Analytica?scandal has thrust Facebook privacy settings into the national conversation after the political firm used the personal data of about 50 million people without their consent.Now, Mozilla is helping Firefox users keep their Facebook data secure so they won't be exploited in the future.The company has introduced a Firefox extension that it says will make it much harder for Facebook to track which websites you browse.Facebook has developed a network of trackers that tell the social media site which of its users are visiting certain webpages, like online retailers. Facebook will then use that information to serve its users ads based on what products they've been viewing.Mozilla says its Facebook Container extension will make it much more difficult to track which websites you visit, and keep your browsing information private.Mozilla admits the extension isn't perfect. In a blog post, the company said that the extension would not have prevented user information from being abused in the Cambridge Analytica scandal. It also says that Facebook Container would not work well on sites which require you to use Facebook information to log in.But Mozilla says the simple step of downloading the extension is giving power back to internet users. "Troves of data are being collected on your behavior on the internet, and so giving users a choice to limit what they share in a way that is under their control is important," the company wrote.To download Facebook container, first download the free Mozilla Firefox browser if you're not already using it. The Defense Department has temporarily grounded all of its 245 F-35 fighter jets for inspection of a potentially faulty engine part in the wake of last month's crash in South Carolina.Initial data from the ongoing investigation into the September 28 crash indicates a fuel tube may have been faulty. In response, all US military F-35s will be inspected as well as F-35s operated by US allies."If suspect fuel tubes are installed, the part will be removed and replaced. If known good fuel tubes are already installed, then those aircraft will be returned to flight status," the Defense Department said in a statement.Inspections are expected to be completed within the next two days, the statement said, and a defense official told CNN some aircraft have already been returned to flight status.The initial assessment is the faulty tube may be on older models of the aircraft, but all are being inspected. 911

The daughter of a hiker who was missing in Zion National Park for nearly two weeks has told CNN that her mother injured her head and became disoriented during the hike.Holly Courtier, 38, was found Sunday after having not been seen since she was dropped off by shuttle on Oct. 6. Courtier's daughter, Kailey Chambers, pleaded with volunteers to help find her mother during the disappearance, saying Courtier was an experienced hiker who would not have gone missing as she did without a reason.In text messages with the cable network, Chambers gave an explanation for what happened to her mother during the two weeks she was missing."She injured her head on a tree," Chambers texted. "She was very disoriented as a result and thankfully ended up near a water source -- a river bed. She thought her best chance of survival was to stay next to a water source."In the texts, Chambers says her mother went without food the entire time she was missing."She was too weak and disoriented (to seek help)," she said. "She was unable to take more than a step or two without collapsing. This prevented her from being able to seek out help. She told me she was so dehydrated she couldn't open her mouth."Courtier was found in the park Sunday after officials received a tip from a credible source. 1291
