TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) — Hurricane Iota has battered Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast and flooded some stretches of neighboring Honduras that were still under water from Hurricane Eta two weeks earlier. The extent of the damage was unclear because much of the affected region was without electricity and phone and internet service, and strong winds hampered radio transmissions.Officials reported at least four deaths around the region, and said other people were unaccounted for.Aid agencies struggled to reach their local contacts, and the government said in a statement that at least 35 towns in the east and north had no phone service. Nicaragua’s telecommunications ministry said phone and broadband provider Columbus Networks was offline because of flooding in Bilwi.Preliminary reports from the coast included toppled trees and electric poles and roofs stripped from homes and businesses, said Guillermo González, director of Nicaragua’s emergency management agency. More than 40,000 people were in shelters.Iota had intensified into a Category 5 storm, but it weakened as it neared the coast and made landfall with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph (250 kph) early Tuesday morning. The system came ashore as a Category 4 hurricane about 30 miles (45 kilometers) south of the Nicaraguan city of Puerto Cabezas, also known as Bilwi. That was just 15 miles (25 kilometers) south of where Hurricane Eta made landfall Nov. 3, also as a Category 4 storm.By Tuesday night, Iota had diminished to a tropical storm and was moving inland over northern Nicaragua and southern Honduras. TAMPA, Fla. -- A former Tampa Bay Lightning player is on his way to becoming a sworn firefighter for the city of Tampa.“I think it’s very similar to the teamwork, the bond together, the brotherhood. It keeps you in shape and it’s very important for us to keep people safe and I want to be a hero to my children,” said Nikita Alekseev.Alekseev is a former first-round draft pick for the Lightning. Since then, he’s studied, graduated from the fire academy, has had EMT training and is finishing his final days of recruit training for Tampa Fire Rescue over the next week.“I have a lot of friends in the service here. I’ve been in the stations throughout my career just visiting and I’m a big community guy so I really like to help the people of the city,” he said.On Thursday, he said his focus was on consistency and efficiency.“Obviously, we’re just starting out so I want to get as much info on every little situation where it’s gonna help me to save my life and my crew. It’s very important to listen to what the instructor’s saying,” he said.The city’s new hires ran through engine company operations, practicing with the fire hose, going through a building and putting water on a building.“It doesn’t matter how big you are, how strong you are, you have to have a technique. It’s a lot of water and you can’t win it. So a lot of good instructors showed me how to do the right things, how to position yourself right and so it helps a lot,” Alekseev said.His fellow recruits include newcomers and legacies, everyone starting from the same place no matter their background.“What I hope is they take the training out here, bring it to the street, continue the training to continue gaining experience, knowledge and becoming a well rounded professional firefighter,” said Tampa Fire Rescue Captain Dan Quatrino.Alekseev and 14 others are part of the department’s first recruit class during the pandemic.“It makes a lot of the day to day operations we do unique and new to all of us,” said Quatrino.After finishing their final days of training, they’ll be sworn in next week.“It’s a small step to achievement, I guess. I want to make proud of the instructors, my friends in the service, my family, my kids, so it’s not really about me it’s about who’s behind this,” said Alekseev.Alekseev said his message to others, is to have goals, work towards them and follow-through, no matter your age.“Ultimate goal? TEMPE, Ariz. — An Arizona woman said a man posing as a Lyft driver tried luring her into his car. Around 9 p.m. Saturday, Bradie Trippi was waiting to be picked up in a parking lot in Tempe, Arizona. The Lyft app showed her driver was a minute away when a man in a gold Infiniti sedan pulled up next to her, she said. “He says, ‘I’m your Lyft’ and then took a phone, flashed it in my face,” Trippi told KNXV. She said the man showed her the passenger app — not the driver app — and the letter “f” of the “Lyft” emblem on his car was backward. Given the fact the man did not match the photo of her driver or description of her driver’s car, Trippi declined to get in the car. “He got aggressive,” she said. “Told me to get in the car, he’s gonna kill me, called me the ‘b word’, started yelling the ‘f word’ at me — I got kind of scared.”When her actual Lyft driver arrived, Trippi said the man sped off. Lyft and Uber spokespeople told KNXV that passengers should always check to make sure the photo of their driver, description of the vehicle and license plate match up before getting inside. Passengers should ask open-ended questions to their driver, like “who are you here to pick up?” Instead of “Are you here to pick up [name]?”Trippi and her actual Lyft driver described the imposter driver as a bald, African-American man with an accent. Ron DeSantis is proposing controversial legislation that would expand Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law that would allow for the use of force against protesters and looters.The expansion of the law includes language that would grant business owners protection in response to criminal acts during protests, like looting.The legislation would also make blocking traffic during a protest a third-degree felony.
