Price gouging continues to be a problem for Amazon shoppers, according to the U.S Public Interest Research Group (PIRG).A consumer watchdog says the price spikes are not based on normal supply and demand.“People are really struggling right now, and the last thing that they need to worry about is going to the store or going online and finding the products that they really need to keep themselves safe at ridiculous prices,” said Grace Brombach, a consumer watchdog associate with U.S. PIRG.U.S. PIRG found a wide range of products can cost two to 14 times more. Still, U.S. PIRG expects this problem to continue.“We see situations like this come up in hurricanes and tornadoes, when people need to buy space heaters and electric lamps,” said Brombach. “And so, this will continue to be a problem going into the future if we don't address this issue now.”Early on in the pandemic, Amazon removed thousands of listings and third party sellers from its website for suspected price gouging.In August, Amazon said it was working to maintain its “fair pricing policy” while taking reasonable increases into account. 1439

Remember when we used to make plans? It was so long ago now you may not remember, but we actually used to start booking our holiday travel in the summer before prices rose to unaffordable levels. That’s right: We could predict what the world would be like months in advance back then.Times have certainly changed; now, some travelers are starting to wonder whether and how to plan for the holidays. Does it make sense to buy plane tickets? What about using points and miles? And what are the chances of a second (or is it third?) wave of the pandemic?I’ve spent the last few months wading through COVID-19 travel policies, spreadsheets full of airfare and hotel data and other boring industry effluvia so you don’t have to. And I’ve got a few nuggets of advice for anyone thinking about booking holiday travel.For starters: Why rush?Should I book now?Years of conditioning have taught us all the perils of waiting until the last minute. But if you haven’t noticed, this year is not like the others, and travel demand is unlikely to reach normal no matter what happens in the next few months.In other words: You shouldn’t feel any rush to book travel until you’re ready.In fact, you might end up paying more if you book in advance rather than closer to your travel dates. Recently, I analyzed a bunch of hotel price data and found that the cost of booking the same room dropped dramatically when booking 15 days in advance, compared to booking four months in advance.That is, the same rooms cost an average of 7 when booked within 15 days compared to 2 when booked four months in advance. And while this trend might not hold into the winter or through the holidays, it’s certainly a good indication that you’re unlikely to save money by booking hotel rooms now.The trend isn’t quite as dramatic for airfare, though it’s possibly more remarkable, since booking within 15 days has historically been a recipe for getting fleeced.Which airline should I fly?This one’s easier: Delta.We performed a big analysis of airline policies in response to COVID-19 and found that Delta had the best overall rating, with Southwest and Alaska hot on its heels.I won’t bore you with all the details here, but some of the factors we took into consideration include:Mask policy enforcement.Blocking seats and limiting capacity.Offering flexible change and cancellation policies.This last bit is especially important when booking holiday travel this year: Make sure the tickets you purchase can be changed or canceled without incurring a fee. This has gotten significantly easier with various COVID-19 waivers and four major airlines, including Delta, all announcing the elimination of most change fees. Be aware of restrictions that remain around basic economy fares.What about points and miles?Hotel points and airline miles can usually offer good workarounds for sky-high holiday prices. Notice that pesky “usually.” Since cash prices are so low, using points and miles is unlikely to offer better than average value this year.That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use miles, just that you won’t get especially good bang for your buck from them right now.Will it be safe?That’s the trillion-dollar question, isn’t it? I’m no epidemiologist, so I’m reluctant to wade into these waters, but there is something important to keep in mind: Where are you planning to travel in December?The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington offers public projections for the pandemic broken down by country and state. These reveal some pretty startlingly different scenarios for different parts of the country.For example, the daily per capita infection rate in California is projected to rise from 42.6 per 100,000 today to 155 per 100,000 by December. New York state in December is projected at 30 per 100,000, up from the current 4.4. Utah’s rate is expected to skyrocket to 179 per 100,000 from today’s 13.5.Of course, these are only projections, and nobody knows what will actually happen by December, but it’s good to keep in mind when planning travel. Property manager Brandon Scholten is seeing big price drops in some of his listings since COVID-19 hit.“We’re at ,040 but we started at above ,300,” Scholten said about a two-bed, two-bath townhouse in downtown Denver.Scholten, the owner of Keyrenter Property Management Denver, says some of his downtown rental properties are staying on the market 20% longer and that prices have dropped nearly 20% compared to the same time last year. And he believes the plummet is linked to the pandemic.“Especially with so many remote work options now,” Scholten said. “I think all of it is just going to push that pressure outward and you’ll see prices fall in the urban corridor.”What’s Scholten is seeing in downtown Denver is happening to other major metropolitan areas across the country.“The pandemic has shifted the demand for rentals away from these really expensive areas,” said Crystal Chen, a marketing manager with Zumper an apartment rental tracker.Zumper’s recent national rent report found one-bedroom rent prices in San Francisco fell nearly 12% year-over-year, the largest drop that city’s ever seen.Other major cities that saw decline in rent prices are New York, Boston and San Jose. Cities that reported some of the largest rent increases include Lexington, Akron and Anchorage.“It makes sense,” Chen said of the prices changes for rent. “Why would people want to pay a big city price tag if they can’t use the amenities and they’re stuck at home?”With more companies embracing working from home and more people looking to social distance, Chen says more renters are now leaving expensive big cities for cheaper surrounding areas.“Which we like to call the 'Brooklyn effect' since the important factors now are space and affordability,” she said.Space and affordability: two things New York City is not known for.“I’ll be honest, a lot of people are leaving,” said Lauren Feldesman, a real estate agent with Compass. “The number of lease break calls I get a week is astronomical.”Feldesman says she is seeing a huge surplus of downtown apartment rental inventory since coronavirus concerns swept the country.“It’s a tough situation,” she said. "People lost their jobs, they’re furloughed or they have their own businesses and their business is really shut down or has taken a huge hit.”While vacancy rates are going up in major metropolitan cities across the country, some downtown renters are seeing some financial relief.“People are now negotiating down 10, 15, even up to 20% of their rent because there is so many more vacancies now as than there was before,” Chen said.Without a vaccine, however, Chen predicts rental prices in downtown areas will continue this downward trend as the rental demand shifts from cities to the suburbs. 2757

  

RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) — Two people were killed in a motorcycle crash east of Ramona on Sunday.The collision happened on Littlepage Road and Old Julian Highway, in the Witch Creek area, just after 2 p.m. between a motorcycle and off-road side-by-side utility task vehicle, often called a UTV, according to CAL FIRE San Diego.The two people riding on the motorcycle were pronounced dead at the scene.
