TEHRAN, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), on Tuesday visited the Confucius Institute at Tehran University, where he encouraged the Iranian students to constantly improve their Chinese level and become professional translators to make contributions to bilateral relations.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, told the Iranian students in the institute that he was moved by their strong interest in learning Chinese. While presenting some Chinese culture-experiencing equipment and books to the institute, Li, who is on an official visit to Iran, said he hopes the institute can use these books and equipment to promote its Chinese-teaching capacities.President of Tehran University Farhad Rahbar said the Confucius Institute has been playing a very important role in promoting Chinese teaching in Iran and boosting bilateral cultural cooperation, adding that the university is willing to further boost cultural and educational cooperation between the two countries.Li also watched performances about Chinese martial arts, poetry recitation and Chinese lion dance by the Iranian students in the Confucius Institute. After visiting Confucius Institute at Tehran University, Li went to the site of Metro line 4 in Tehran, which was jointly constructed by Iran and China.Li said the operation of the Metro line 4 is a product of the bilateral economic and trade exchanges, and he hopes that with joint efforts by the two sides the Metro line 4 can be turned into a line of friendship and cooperation between the two sides."I hope more achievements about our cooperation can be acquired in the future," he added. The Confucius Institute, the first in Iran, is co-founded by Yunnan University of China and Tehran University. It was officially opened in Tehran on Jan. 1, 2009.Iran is the last leg of Li's four-nation tour which has taken him to Estonia, Montenegro and Ireland.

BEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official Tuesday urged state-run publishing houses to resist vulgarity.Li Changchun, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks during a visit to the 17th Beijing International Book Fair.Li also urged Chinese publishers to expand their share of the international publishing market.Li said state-run publishing houses should reform their structures of ownership to increase their competitiveness and expand their international market share. The official also encouraged Chinese publishers to create more publications.Li Changchun (2nd L), a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, visits the 17th Beijing International Book Fair in Beijing, capital of China, on Aug. 31, 2010.He also urged them to resist vulgar and kitsch works both in print and in electronic media. The book fair, co-sponsored by the General Administration of Press and Publication, the Information Office of the State Council and other government departments, has attracted nearly 2,000 publishing and distribution companies from more than 58 countries and regions.

BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- The United States has repeatedly blocked investment from Chinese companies on national security grounds, a protectionist move that will only harm its own interests, analysts say.Eight U.S. congressmen recently asked the Obama administration to scrutinize a deal between Chinese telecom equipment giant Huawei and the American operator Sprint Nextel on national security grounds. It was not the first time Huawei's attempts to break into the U.S. market have been stymied. Earlier its buyout attempt of 3Com was summarily dismissed by the U.S. government.Citing national security concerns again, a bipartisan group of 50 lawmakers in July requested that the government investigate an investment project of China's Anshan Iron and Steel Group (Ansteel), China's fourth largest steelmaker, which plans to establish a joint rebar venture with a U.S. partner in Mississippi."It is inappropriate for some U.S. lawmakers to label regular business behavior as a move that threatens national security," Yao Jian, a spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce, recently said about Ansteel's investment plan."I hope the United States can create a better investment environment for Chinese enterprises," he said.Chinese analysts said the actions were sheer protectionism, adding that national security concerns is only a lame excuse by U.S. authorities, whose true intention is to protect the interests of domestic enterprises and industries. Moreover, standing up to China's allegedly unfair trade practices can easily earn the congressmen much needed political chips in the upcoming mid-term election in November, the analysts said. The setback that Huawei and Ansteel suffered is only the tip of the iceberg. Actually, blocking investment from Chinese companies in the name of national security has morphed into a knee-jerk reaction that could only harm America's own interests.Emcore Corporation, a U.S. fiber optics producer, announced in late June that it has abandoned a joint venture in partnership with China's Tangshan Caofeidian Investment Corporation because the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States "has certain regulatory concerns about the transaction."

BEIJING, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official Wednesday urged local governments to cooperate with the central government in supervision and inspection work.He Guoqiang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks at a meeting on central inspection work.Head of the country's discipline and supervision work, He asked officials of local governments, especially those at the county level, to cooperate with central government's inspection teams. The CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, the Ministry of Supervision and other central government agencies have sent inspection teams to more than 900 counties around the country since October 2007 when CPC's 17th National Congress was held. The official said the central government's inspection work is very important for anti-corruption efforts at state-run enterprises. He also pledged to send inspection teams to every state-run enterprise every five years.

HANOI, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Monday accepted an invitation to visit China early next year, a Chinese official said.Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie extended the invitation during his talks here with Gates, Guan Youfei, a Chinese Defense Ministry official, told a press conference.Although very brief, the meeting showed that both sides attach great importance to developing military ties between the two countries, and was helpful to enhance mutual understanding and trust, he said. The tete-a-tete between the two defense chiefs was their first since bilateral military ties soured in January following Pentagon's decision to sell a 6.4-billion-dollar arms package to China's Taiwan province. While noting the setback, Guan said that ties between the two militaries have never ceased moving forward, and dialogues and exchanges under some established frameworks will continue.Beijing and Washington will hold their annual consultations on maritime security in Hawaii later this week, which will be followed by a new round of annual defense consultations in Washington, he added. The schedule has not been fixed for the Washington meeting, which is to be co-hosted by Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Ma Xiaotian and U.S. Under-Secretary of Defense Michele Flournoy, Guan said.Commenting on the on-again-off-again military ties between China and the United States, Guan stressed that the main obstacle is Washington's arms sales to Taiwan.During talks with Gates, the Chinese defense minister said it is important for the two countries to respect each other's core interests and major concerns, consolidate mutual trust and decrease suspicion and misjudgment, and properly settle differences and sensitive issues in order to keep bilateral military ties in a healthy track.
