Constructed after 9/11, Rush’s CEO, Dr. Omar Lateef, says the facility was designed to handle mass casualty incidents, and now, it could be a model for epidemic response.“Many of the same features of the building make it a building structured to treat highly contagious infections,” says Lateef.The hospital has the ability to quickly ramp up to 130 percent capacity. Intake and extra beds can be added within minutes and are already on deck. “We are essentially extending our emergency department into our ground floor pavilion area,” says capital projects construction manager Angela Tosic.The ambulance bay area has been transformed into a triage area. They are converting spaces into what are known as “negative pressure” units that help to prevent cross-contamination.“We can take entire quadrants of the building flip switches and make them negative pressure,” explains Lateef. “We can take massive areas of the building that when we built them are nice hallways but secretly inside the columns are oxygen dispensers.”The incident command center is at the heart of the operation. “We closely monitor both the activity of coronavirus locally, as well as our testing of coronavirus,” says Casey. “And then, we look at what's the next step that we need to be prepared to take.”Keeping staff safe and preventing the spread of the virus is a top priority. Employees are being asked to self-monitor and check their temperature at home twice a day. Once at work, facial recognition scanners not only confirm their identities but also take real-time temperature readings to ensure they do not have fevers. Should staffer’s exhibit symptoms, a drive through COVID-19 testing area is already up and running.Patients exhibiting COVID-19-like symptoms enter and are housed in a completely separate unit.Rush says it will max out its bed capacity as much as possible but has to balance that with not running out of available staff.“The number we have is when patients stop coming in we'll figure out a way to not turn people away,” says Lateef. 2761

The US Air Force ordered immediate inspections of its entire fleet of B-1 bombers Thursday over safety concerns related to its "drogue chute system" which is used to right the aircraft's ejection seat prior to the seat's main parachute deploying.While none of the planes are being allowed to fly, the order is technically not an official grounding of the fleet, as each individual aircraft will be allowed to immediately return to flying operations upon inspection."The safety stand-down will afford maintenance and Aircrew Flight Equipment technicians the necessary time to thoroughly inspect each aircraft," the Air Force's Global Strike Command said in a statement."As these inspections are completed and any issues are resolved, aircraft will return to flight," the statement added.Global Strike Command would not estimate how long the inspections would take.Air Force officials say the drogue chute problem is unrelated to a previous issue with the aircraft's ejection seat which had led to a similar safety stand-down last year.All of the Air Force's 61 B-1 bombers are currently stationed in the US so the order will not impact operations.The B-1 is a conventional bomber and was used to conduct airstrikes against Syrian military targets in 2018 following the regime's use of chemical weapons. 1313

The Supreme Court won't upend the conviction of a Massachusetts woman who sent her boyfriend text messages urging him to kill himself. Michelle Carter is serving a 15-month sentence after being convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the 2014 death of her boyfriend, Conrad Roy III. Three Muslim families were not allowed to board a New York City ferry after they were told they posed a "security issue," according to a discrimination complaint filed with the New York City Commission on Human Rights this week.The complaint was filed by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) on behalf of the families, which included eight children, against HNY Ferry, LLC; New York City Economic Development Corporation; the City of New York; and two employees referred to as John Doe 1 and Jane Doe 1.The suit seeks disciplinary actions, a formal apology and compensatory damages for "humiliation, embarrassment, and severe emotional distress," claiming that not being allowed to board was based on discrimination and that the security concerns were an "after-the-fact false excuse."A day out and a change of plansSeptember 21 was meant to be a day for three women and their children, ages two months to 14 years old, to enjoy before one of the families went to Pakistan for an extended period of time, the complaint said. Two of the women wore hijabs, according to the complaint.The plan was to visit Governor's Island, but after taking the first ferry from their Brooklyn home to Wall Street they realized that it was getting late and changed their plans to go to Brooklyn's Pier 6 instead, the complaint said. Instead of navigating the line with young children and a double stroller, the women got permission to wait to the side and board last.When their turn came, two ferry employees allegedly told them he had been informed by security not to let them on, the complaint said. But when he and another employee escorted the families to security, the officer "was confused and did not know why Jane and John Doe 1 were blaming security," according to the complaint.The families said the ferry left without them.As they were discussing the situation, another employee of HNY Ferry allegedly raised her voice, telling the families that they weren't allowed on the ferry to Pier 6 because the children were standing on the seats on their last ferry ride. But when they returned to their starting destination, a crew member they had spoken to early in the day said she did not remember the children behaving inappropriately, the complaint said.The families stated they "believe this was an after-the-fact false excuse in an attempt to explain away Respondents' discriminatory conduct and denial of services."CNN has reached out to HNY Ferry for comment, but has not heard back.The ferry is operated by a company called Hornblower, which could not be reached for comment.Both the NYCEDC and the mayor's office said the city would investigate the incident."Discrimination has no place in our city.
