ATLANTA, Ga. – While residents along the Gulf Coast seek shelter from Hurricane Laura, they should still keep the threat of COVID-19 in mind.Emergency managers, shelter managers, and public health professionals are taking measures to reduce the possible spread of the coronavirus among people who seek safety in a disaster shelter during severe weather events like this.For those staying in a shelter during the storm, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offered some tips to lower the risk of coronavirus infection:Preparing to shelterIf you need to evacuate, the CDC says to prepare a “go kit” with personal items you cannot do without during an emergency. That includes items that can help protect you and others from COVID-19, like hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol, soap, disinfectant wipes, and two masks for each person.Know a safe place to shelter and have several ways to receive weather alerts, such as the National Weather Service’s cell phone alerts, NOAA Weather Radio, or NWS alerts on Twitter.Find out if your local public shelter is open, in case you need to evacuate your home and go there. Your shelter location may be different this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Follow guidance from your local public health or emergency management officials on when and where to shelter.Make a plan and prepare a disaster kit for your pets. Find out if your disaster shelter will accept pets. Typically, when shelters accommodate pets, the pets are housed in a separate area from people.Follow safety precautions when using transportation to evacuate. If you have to travel away from your community to evacuate, follow safety precautions for travelers to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.While in a public shelterPractice social distancing. Stay at least 6 feet from other people outside of your household.Follow CDC COVID-19 preventive actions—wash your hands often, cover coughs and sneezes, and follow shelter policies for wearing masks. Avoid sharing food and drink with anyone if possible.Follow disaster shelter policies and procedures designed to protect everyone in the shelter, especially those who are at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19, including older adults and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions.Avoid touching high-touch surfaces, such as handrails, as much as possible. Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol immediately after you touch these surfaces.Keep your living area in the shelter clean and disinfect frequently touched items such as toys, cellphones, and other electronics.If you feel sick when you arrive at the shelter or start to feel sick while sheltering, tell shelter staff immediately.Keeping children safe in sheltersTeach and reinforce everyday preventive actions for keeping children healthy.Make sure children aged 2 and older wear masks. Masks should not be used by children under the age of 2. They also should not be used by people having trouble breathing, or who are unconscious, incapacitated, or unable to remove the mask without assistance.Be a good role model—if you wash your hands often, your children are more likely to do the same.Help your children stay at least 6 feet away from anyone who is not in your household.Watch your child for any signs of illness and tell shelter staff if your child may be ill.Try to deal with the disaster calmly and confidently, as this can provide the best support for your children. BALDWIN PARK, Calif. - Arson officials in Los Angeles are investigating after someone set an official ballot drop box on fire Sunday night in Baldwin Park.The Baldwin Park Police Department said on Facebook that they and the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a ballot box on fire outside the Baldwin Park Library just before 8:30 p.m.According to police, ballots recovered from the box were turned over to the Los Angeles County Registrar's Office. 470

As the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And when it comes to appreciating art, that may be more true than ever. It's so subjective and comes down to true appreciation. One woman understands that more than most.To Myrna Hayutin the photos on her gallery wall are more than pictures of the past. She points out some of the art on display.  "This is a limited edition signed by Carl Mydans," Hayutin said. "This is Babe Ruth the last time he put on his uniform."These are works of art."It is history," Hayutin said. "It's just knowledge."And for the last 35 years she's been selling fine art like these pieces, despite the fact that she's legally blind."I anticipate doing this for at least another 10 years," Hayutin said. "As long as my eyesight holds."Hayutin started losing her eyesight when she was eight due to retinitis pigmentosa. And over the years, it's gotten progressively worse."It's like an island," Hayutin said. "As the disease progresses the island gets smaller and smaller now I see through two straws. So you may be standing right here but I am not seeing you. Or if were talking and you move I'll lose you."Still it hasn't affected her love for art or her determination to purse it as a career."It never occurred to me to stop me from doing anything that I really wanted to do," Hayutin said.Hayutin runs a successful international fine art gallery, Gallery M, and recently became an art appraiser."I'm looking at the artwork but honestly thank goodness with my devices I can really zoom in and see them much, much better," Hayutin said.Hayutin said her dog, Gouda, helps her navigate the changes in her eyesight, but what helps most is not focusing on what could happen."I would never have opened the gallery if I was fearful of what would be instead of what was at that time," Hayutin said. "I try to live in today and use the eyesight that I have today."Hayutin said every day is what you make it."There are some days where I'm not as positive as I should be, but I try it," Hauytin said. "I try to get back on that positive I mean because I'm surrounded by all of this gorgeous art and that's very uplifting."  2212

Authorities across four countries are trying to learn who sent dozens of email bomb threats Thursday afternoon, causing anxiety and business disruptions but no reported violence.Threats were reported across the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.Universities, courthouses and newspapers received them. It was unknown if the threats were identical.Local police in dozens of cities and counties got involved. So did the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.Recipients were reported to have received an email saying that there was a hidden bomb that would detonate unless the sender received a bitcoin ransom. It's unclear whether everyone who got a threat Thursday received the same email.An email demanding ,000 via bitcoin was forwarded Thursday to CNN affiliate KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City by a viewer who received it at her business.The message was identical to an email warning posted on social media by the police department in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and it was similar to descriptions of other threats posted on social media nationwide.The Cedar Rapids Police Department "has found NO CREDIBLE EVIDENCE that these emails are authentic. It appears to be a robo-email that has been sent throughout the area hoping to scam businesses out of money. We have also received information that businesses in surrounding counties may have also received this email," the agency posted.CNN is not disclosing the name of the sender or specifics of the bitcoin account. 1505

As part of his push to get schools reopened in the fall, he is calling on Congress to approve 5 billion in funding to help with additional costs associated with the coronavirus pandemic.“This funding will support mitigation measures such as smaller class sizes, more teachers and teacher aides, repurposes spaces to practice social distancing, and crucially mask wearing,” Trump said.Trump is also taking a different tact to compelling schools to reopen. Previously, Trump threatened to pull federal funds from schools that did not reopen. Many of those funds are through the Title 1 program, which are directed toward poorer and disadvantaged schools.Rather than pulling federal funds from schools that opt for virtual learning, Trump said that the supplemental funds would go with the students. Under his proposal, students could use federal funds for other in-person learning options, or for homeschooling.“If schools do not reopen, the funding should go to parents to send their child to public/private, charter, religious or home school of their choice, the keyword being choice,” Trump said. “If the school is closed, the money should follow the student so the parents and families are in control of their own decisions. So, we would like the money to go to the parents of the student.
