Seattle Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano was suspended for 80 games on Tuesday by MLB after he tested positive for a banned substance as part of MLB's screening for performance-enhancing drugs. In a statement released by Cano, he claimed he took furosemide, which Cano said he took for a legitimate medical purpose. But the drug allegedly is commonly used as a masking agent. The drug could be used for high blood pressure, or to reduce extra fluid in the body caused by liver disease, heart failure or kidney disease, WebMD says. "Recently I learned that I tested positive for a substance called furosemide, which is not a performance-enhancing substance," Cano said in a statement issued by the MLB Players Association. "Furosemide is used to treat various medical conditions in the United States and the Dominican Republic. This substance was given to me by a licensed doctor in the Dominican Republic to treat a medical ailment."While I did not realize at the time that I was given a medication that was banned, I obviously now wish that I had been more careful."Cano is an eight-time MLB All-Star. Cano was previously on the disabled list, and was expected to be out six to eight weeks. He will be eligible to return Aug. 14. 1278

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California man charged with the murder of a University of Pennsylvania student carried out the killing because the victim was gay, prosecutors said Thursday.A hate crime sentencing enhancement was being added to a murder charge against 21-year-old Samuel Woodward for the death of 19-year-old sophomore Blaze Bernstein, Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said.Since Bernstein's body was found in January at a park near his parents' Lake Forest, California, home, investigators reviewed Woodward's cellphone, laptop and social media and found hateful materials against a range of groups and substantial evidence Bernstein was killed because he was gay, Rackauckas said.RELATED: High school classmate charged with murder in death of Penn student"We have no room for this kind of hate in our society," Rackauckas told reporters.Woodward, who is from the upscale seaside city of Newport Beach, has pleaded not guilty to the killing. He is being held on million bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 22.With the change, Woodward faces a maximum potential sentence of life without parole. He previously faced a maximum sentence of 26 years to life in prison if he were convicted.A message was left for Woodward's attorney.RELATED: Missing Penn student found dead in Orange County ParkBernstein went missing in January while visiting his parents in the tight-knit Lake Forest community of Foothill Ranch, about 45 miles (72 kilometers) southeast of Los Angeles. His body was found in the park nearly a week later buried in a shallow grave.Bernstein went to the park with Woodward the night he disappeared, authorities said. The two had attended the same high school in Orange County. 1754

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) - Several immigrants' rights groups allege harassment and one man says he was strip-searched by Customs and Border Protection agents. The Southern Poverty Law Center, the Center for Constitutional Rights, and the American Immigration Council filed a motion requesting more information from the U.S. government regarding the detention of the Director of Al Otro Lado, calling their acts retaliation for helping asylum seekers.Hugo Castro, Director of Border Angels, Tijuana, spoke with 10News about his experience last December."I was sent to secondary for no reason," Castro said. He was in Mexicali for a doctor's appointment when he was detained by a CBP officer."The officer searched me, said I didn't have a weapon and was trying to grab me and I said hey, you don't need to grab me, just tell me what to do," He said the next 5 hours were unnerving. "They took my cellphone... after that they searched me, body search, and took off my shoes and look all around my, through my pants and underwear," he said looking at the ground.Castro said he was interrogated about migrants and the immigration rights' group Al Otro Lado."You know, if I was part of the caravan the organizers. If we were paying migrants, if we were helping migrants to cross the border."Castro said he explained to the officer he helps bring donations to nine shelters in Tijuana. Castro said he was detained for five and a half hours. He said he was detained again in January.Founder of Border Angels Enrique Morones was livid after he heard of the harassment."What happened to Hugo Castro and James Cordero both border angels, is outrageous, is absolutely outrageous and they're not the only two, there's other people I know who have been in the same situation," he said.SPLC, CCRT and the American Immigration Council claim alerts were placed on immigration lawyer's passports. 1886
