SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Cajon Valley Union School District has joined 17 other California school districts in filing lawsuits against Juul for marketing its e-cigarettes and related products to children, attorneys said Tuesday.The suit is one of several recently filed against the San Francisco- based vaping company, which could not immediately be reached for comment regarding the litigation.Cajon Valley Union's suit is one of three filed by San Diego County school districts, joining San Diego and Poway Unified.RELATED: San Diego Unified School District suing JUULThe lawsuits allege negligence and nuisance on the part of Juul, claiming its advertising campaigns targeting young people have caused an e- cigarette "epidemic," which has "severely impacted" the school districts by interfering "with normal school operations."The school districts are also seeking compensatory damages to offset financial losses the districts allege resulted from vaping-related student absences, as well as extensive costs the districts incurred to establish outreach and education programs regarding vaping and enforcement infrastructure such as vape detectors, surveillance systems and extra staff to monitor e- cigarette use among students."The youth vaping epidemic created by Juul has significant costs," said John Fiske, shareholder for plaintiff's attorneys Baron & Budd. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Attorney's Office Thursday urged families with guns in the home to practice proper firearm safety while self- quarantining to keep the weapons out of the hands of children.With stay-at-home orders issued at the state and local levels, and schools closed down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, City Attorney Mara Elliott's office said gun safety is paramount."When you have guns and children in the home and do not practice safe storage, you are increasing the risk that someone will be accidentally shot," Elliott said. "Children are very resourceful when it comes to locating things their parents thought they'd never find. When they find a gun, it often leads to tragedy."The city's Safe Storage of Firearms Ordinance, which was authored by Elliott and went into effect last year, requires San Diego gun owners to store firearms in a locked container or to secure guns with a trigger lock unless they are in the immediate control of an authorized user.The City Attorney's Office said trigger locks and gun safes are readily available for purchase online and that all guns sold in California after Jan. 1, 2002, were required to come with a free trigger lock.Elliott's office said 4.5 million children nationwide live in homes with one more loaded and unlocked firearms.Firearm retailers nationwide have seen an uptick in firearm sales amid the coronavirus pandemic, and it remains unclear whether gun stores might be ordered to close locally.In one of the county's coronavirus-related briefings, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said firearm stores were not considered essential businesses that should remain open per the state's stay-at-home order.Earlier this week, San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said his office was awaiting further guidance from the governor's office, and would not force gun stores to close in the meantime, citing a concern that doing so would push consumers to purchase guns on the black market.On Wednesday, Gov. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Bengal tiger cub rescued during a smuggling attempt at the US-Mexico border was joined Monday by a Sumatran tiger cub from the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.The Bengal tiger was discovered last month at the Otay Mesa border crossing last month and taken to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park for care.RELATED: Smuggled tiger cub found at US-Mexico borderThe Sumatran tiger that joined the cub in San Diego is nine-weeks-old. He has been fed by humans since last month because his mother became aggressive toward him. Zoo personnel said the cub would "chuff" in a friendly tiger greeting but his mother, Damai, would not respond.Animal care staff from the Safari Park were on hand at San Diego International Airport to meet the cub and the keepers upon their arrival. The young tiger was immediately transported to the Safari Park’s Ione and Paul Harter Animal Care Center, where he will continue to receive the care he needs.“We are beyond thrilled to welcome this tiger cub to the Safari Park,” said Andy Blue, associate curator of mammals at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “His keepers reported he did extremely well during the flight — slept most of the way. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted 5-4 today to extend the city's moratorium on commercial and residential evictions until the end of September amid high unemployment rates during the coronavirus pandemic. The moratorium that was slated to expire Wednesday will be extended to Sept. 30 as a result of the council's vote. Council members Georgette Gomez, Monica Montgomery, Jennifer Campbell, Chris Ward and Vivian Moreno voted in favor, while Barbara Bry, Mark Kersey, Scott Sherman and Chris Cate voted no.The moratorium prohibits landlords from evicting renters and small businesses that are unable to cover their rent or lease payments due to financial hardship brought about by the COVID-19 outbreak.Under the moratorium, renters and small businesses cannot be evicted if they notify their landlord in writing, on or before the day the rent is due, that they are unable to pay. They have one week after notification to provide proof that their financial hardship is related to the COVID-19 pandemic.Landlords and tenants are encouraged to work out a payment plan on their own. The eviction ban first went into effect March 25, with Tuesday's vote marking its second extension.The vote came following about two hours of public comment, in which numerous residents called in to ask for the council to extend the moratorium, with some asking for an extension until as far as the end of the year.The council was also slated to take action Tuesday to establish a rental assistance program, funded by more than million in federal COVID-19 relief funds. 1578
