The foam was so large, a dog became lost in it and several people had to jump in to find the animal.A weatherman for 7News in Australia was on the beach ready to do a live report on the wild weather, when a woman is seen on camera jumping into the foam shouting “Hazel!”Weatherman Paul Burt dropped his microphone and is seen walking over to the woman and joining the search for her pet, Hazel.The search was successful and Hazel was soon back in the arms of her owner.The eastern coast of Australia is being battered right now as a powerful storm moves through the area. Some areas of Queensland saw about 7 inches of rain on Sunday, and wind gusts around 60 mph. 806

President Donald Trump took action Wednesday to make it a little easier for the nation's military spouses to find employment as their families deploy domestically and abroad.The President signed an executive order aimed at increasing opportunities for military spouses to obtain federal jobs and encouraging agencies to increase their use of the noncompetitive hiring authority for military spouses. Trump said he hoped the executive action would encourage private-sector businesses to follow suit in their hiring practices.Speaking to a crowd of military spouses at the White House, the President said, "Your support is essential to making our military the mightiest fighting force in the world and getting stronger all the time."He continued, "We can never repay you for all that you do. We know what you do, and your spouse knows what you do. We can never repay you for that, but we can and we will give you the opportunities you deserve."The unemployment rate for military spouses is 16%, four times the national average for female adults, a statistic the President noted.A survey of military families released last June from Hiring Our Heroes, a US Chamber of Commerce foundation, found that unemployment and underemployment are major challenges for the spouses of service members, 92% of whom are female. Among military spouses who are employed, 14% are in part-time jobs and half of that part-time group wants full-time work.Trump promised, "We are going to change that, and we are going to change it as quickly as we can. It will go fast."While many military spouses choose "portable" career paths like teaching or nursing or law, those often have state-specific licensing requirements that present barriers with each new move.The Trump administration is building on the work begun by former first lady Michelle Obama and former second lady Jill Biden, who through their Joining Forces initiative called on US governors to streamline licensing and credentialing for the military community."Even though all 50 states have addressed this issue in some way, we know that there are still plenty of gaps and challenges that we need to work on, so as far as I'm concerned, our work here definitely isn't finished," Michelle Obama told the Military Times in 2016.The licensing barriers sometimes force spouses to choose between advancing their own careers and moving from place to place with their service member husband or wife."We're working with states across the country to encourage them to remove licensing barriers so that spouses who work in careers such as teaching, nursing and law, many others, also can get a job in their profession no matter where they move," Trump said Wednesday.The administration has been working to address the challenges of military spouse employment for several months. Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway and senior adviser Ivanka Trump held a listening session with military spouses last August, and they have since had meetings on the topic.The White House's own Office of Public Liaison Deputy Director Jennifer Korn, who was present for the signing of the executive order Wednesday, is the wife of a Marine."One of the biggest challenges is, do I leave my career or do I leave my husband?" Korn said at the listening session last year."At different points of my career, I have left my career. A couple times, me and my husband have lived apart, at one point three years apart while he was on back-to-back deployments. It's very difficult if you have to choose." 3519

Property manager Brandon Scholten is seeing big price drops in some of his listings since COVID-19 hit.“We’re at ,040 but we started at above ,300,” Scholten said about a two-bed, two-bath townhouse in downtown Denver.Scholten, the owner of Keyrenter Property Management Denver, says some of his downtown rental properties are staying on the market 20% longer and that prices have dropped nearly 20% compared to the same time last year. And he believes the plummet is linked to the pandemic.“Especially with so many remote work options now,” Scholten said. “I think all of it is just going to push that pressure outward and you’ll see prices fall in the urban corridor.”What’s Scholten is seeing in downtown Denver is happening to other major metropolitan areas across the country.“The pandemic has shifted the demand for rentals away from these really expensive areas,” said Crystal Chen, a marketing manager with Zumper an apartment rental tracker.Zumper’s recent national rent report found one-bedroom rent prices in San Francisco fell nearly 12% year-over-year, the largest drop that city’s ever seen.Other major cities that saw decline in rent prices are New York, Boston and San Jose. Cities that reported some of the largest rent increases include Lexington, Akron and Anchorage.“It makes sense,” Chen said of the prices changes for rent. “Why would people want to pay a big city price tag if they can’t use the amenities and they’re stuck at home?”With more companies embracing working from home and more people looking to social distance, Chen says more renters are now leaving expensive big cities for cheaper surrounding areas.“Which we like to call the 'Brooklyn effect' since the important factors now are space and affordability,” she said.Space and affordability: two things New York City is not known for.“I’ll be honest, a lot of people are leaving,” said Lauren Feldesman, a real estate agent with Compass. “The number of lease break calls I get a week is astronomical.”Feldesman says she is seeing a huge surplus of downtown apartment rental inventory since coronavirus concerns swept the country.“It’s a tough situation,” she said. "People lost their jobs, they’re furloughed or they have their own businesses and their business is really shut down or has taken a huge hit.”While vacancy rates are going up in major metropolitan cities across the country, some downtown renters are seeing some financial relief.“People are now negotiating down 10, 15, even up to 20% of their rent because there is so many more vacancies now as than there was before,” Chen said.Without a vaccine, however, Chen predicts rental prices in downtown areas will continue this downward trend as the rental demand shifts from cities to the suburbs. 2757

NerdWallet narrowed its focus this quarter to the 10 metros that had the most population growth from mid-2016 to mid-2017, the latest data available from the U.S. Census Bureau. RAMONA (KGTV) - — The owner of Ramona Fitness Center is trying to rally business owners to stand up for their rights and consider defying San Diego County public health orders that require many businesses to close.“They’re forcing us out of business," Peter San Nicolas told ABC 10News in an interview Tuesday. "They’ll force people to not be able to pay for food and pay for home, for somewhere to live. We’re talking about basic necessities and they’re pushing us to the limit.”Gyms are among the sectors ordered to cease all indoor operations after the county moved into the state's purple, or worst, tier. This comes as the county recorded 1,546 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday, a single-day record.San Nicolas makes the case that gyms can open safely and that forcing them to close will not stop the spread. “We haven’t had any issue with it here in the gym. We’ve had over 25,000 check-ins just since June and we’ve had no cases of covid here at the gym.”According to the latest outbreak numbers on the county website, only 0.4% of all cases recorded between June 5 and November 14 have been tied to gyms. However, many public health experts say there is no question gyms should be closed during this most recent surge. "Gyms are one of the riskiest possible businesses," said Dr. Rebecca Fielding-Miller, an epidemiologist who teaches at UC San Diego, in an email to ABC 10News. "By definition, people are breathing heavily in an indoor space, which is a recipe for spread. And while I haven’t been inside a gym since March, I would hazard a guess that gyms that are threatening to defy county orders are also not gyms that are enforcing masking policies. They should absolutely be closed."During the last COVID-19 surge in August, Ramona Fitness Centers became one of the first and only businesses cited and then charged by the District Attorney for remaining open in violation of public health orders. San Nicolas says he expects the County to come after him again. He is represented by a legal team attempting to sue for businesses to stay open. 2059
