BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- China and Africa celebrated the tenth anniversary of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing Monday, outlining future efforts for greater development of the new type of strategic partnership.Addressing a reception marking the anniversary, Jia Qinglin, top Chinese political advisor, thanked all those who have contributed to the development of FOCAC, a platform for dialogue and pragmatic cooperation between China and Africa launched in October 2000.Hailing the establishment of the forum as a strategic decision by Chinese and African leaders, Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said the mechanism of the forum has gradually improved and borne growing significance over the last decade.China and Africa have enjoyed increasingly frequent high-level exchanges, mutual political trust and trade relations. "China and Africa have come closer together. Our links have become stronger and our friendship has grown deeper. The relationship is now at a new historical starting point," said Jia.Jia mentioned the recently concluded fifth plenary session of the 17th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which reviewed and adopted the proposal for formulating the 12th five-year plan on national economic and social development.

YANGON, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- The 5th Escort Task group of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA)- Navy, made up of two warships -- "Guanhzhou" and "Caohu" made a friendly call at Myanmar Yangon's Thilawa Port Sunday afternoon.It was also the first time for Chinese naval warship to have called at Myanmar port.The five-day mission is aimed at promoting friendly relationships between the two armed forces of the two countries and exchange between the two navies.A grand ceremony was launched to welcome the Chinese warships amid rain, attended by Major Han Sein, Commander of Myanmar Navy Dockyard Base, Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Ye Dabo and other embassy officials as well as representatives of Chinese companies, teachers and students based in Myanmar and local Chinese residents totaling about 200.Chinese naval soldiers and officers of destroyer Guangzhou stand in formation on board upon their arrival at Myanmar Yangon's Thilawa Port, Aug. 29, 2010. BAOSHAN, Yunnan, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from mudslides that hit a village in southwest China's Yunnan Province Wednesday has climbed to 12, and 36 are still missing, the rescue headquarters said Thursday.By 9:30 p.m. Thursday, rescuers had saved 23 people from the rubble of homes in Hedong Village of Longyang District in Baoshan City, headquarters officials said at the site.The accident happened at about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, trapping 71 people from 21 families.An initial investigation blamed the tragedy on loose dirt and rocks sitting on a sleep slope which had been soaked in rainfall for about ten days.More than 1,000 people have participated in the rescue operation and more than 120 medical workers are treating the injured and disinfecting the site.Tents, quilts, clothes and plenty of first-aid materials have been sent to the site where rescuers are evacuating people to safe places.

BEIJING, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has urged the Communist Party of China and the government to give priority to education in their work, in order to push forward socialist modernization and achieve the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.Xinhua News Agency on Wednesday issued the full text of President Hu's speech on the country's education cause, which was made during a high-profile work conference on national education held in Beijing on July 13.In the speech, President Hu said education is the cornerstone of national rejuvenation and social progress, and the basic means to improve all-round development of individuals.He said authorities should be innovative when deepening education reform and enhancing international education cooperation, and should promote education equality by protecting citizens' lawful rights to education, supporting those in need, and promoting balanced education development between different regions and between urban and rural areas.China's National Plan for Medium and Long-term Education Reform and Development (2010-2020) should be fully carried out, Hu said, adding the whole society should be mobilized to support the country's education development.President Hu said the government should expand education coverage across the country and strive for an equal and high-quality education system for all citizens.Hu pointed out five objectives in promoting education development.First, the education cause must be treated as a strategic mission and priority in the country's overall development plan.Strategic priority should be given to education in the work of the Party and the government, he said, adding that financing and public resources should be allocated in favor of education and human resources development.Hu pledged that the government will increase investment into education cause and realize a goal that 4 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) will be spent on education by 2012.
