Critics are calling Sinclair's promos pro-Trump propaganda. Now the company is defending the initiative, and calling it something much more mundane: A "corporate news journalistic responsibility promotional campaign."Sinclair, America's largest operator of local TV stations, is in the spotlight after a controversial promo video went viral over the weekend.Some staffers say they're embarrassed by the promos and concerned about their own credibility as journalists. A few local anchors and reporters are even reacting publicly, risking the ire of management.But Sinclair senior vice president of news Scott Livingston is defending the promos as a "well-researched journalistic initiative focused on fair and objective reporting."In an internal memo obtained by CNNMoney, Livingston slammed what he called "misleading, often defamatory stories" about the company. Some of the language echoes President Trump's anti-media messaging. And it's written to make it sound like the opinion of the local anchors, when in fact it's a mandate from management.Concerned journalists contacted CNNMoney about the promos last month. CORONADO, Calif., (KGTV) — Some Coronado residents are shocked and confused after getting a letter from the City, urging them to read the newly released Environmental Impact Report for the airport's "Land Use Compatibility Plan."Many worried that a new airport would be coming into Naval Air Base North Island. However, as 10News discovered, the San Diego Regional Airport Authority has no plans to expand the airport into the Coronado. Custom golf cart maker, Mike Matheny and his dog, Buddy, love everything about Coronado — even the blaring jet noise. "Well, that's the sound of freedom to me," Matheny said. But when he and his neighbors got a letter from the City of Coronado, urging residents to read the Environmental Impact Report for "Naval Air Station North Island Airport Land Use Compatibility Plan," many wondered, are they expanding the airport onto the base?"I think there are other avenues," Matheny said. "Everybody's talking about Brown Field being the most ideal. Expanding that and so forth. But I don't want it here in Coronado. I know that."Just the thought of commercial planes constantly roaring above his home, the increased traffic, and property values taking a nosedive made Matheny nervous. So 10News asked the San Diego Regional Airport Authority to clear the air. Are there plans to expand the airport into Coronado?"None whatsoever," Airport Authority manager, Ralph Redman, said. It turns out the 182-page document is one of 16 state-mandated reports that assess the environmental impacts of the current airport onto surrounding neighborhoods. The report shows there are no significant impacts to Coronado residents, except in the "Land Use and Planning" category. If adopted, 1,000 residents who live in the same area as Matheny would have strict restrictions on future property developments. "We wouldn't want a school or a high rise building to be built right off the end of a runway," Redman said. "We are trying to limit the amount of density that would go into that area."So with no plans for a new airport, Matheny and Buddy can breathe a sigh of relief. Back to living the life in his sweet Coronado home. "Every time you come across the bridge, you just feel like you're in paradise," Matheny said. The Airport Authority is asking stakeholders and Coronado residents to submit their input on the Environmental Study by Feb. 7, 2020. In the end, the City of Coronado will decide if they will adopt the Airport Authority's Plan. That vote will take place this spring. 2515

CLEWISTON, Fla. -- An overturned sugarcane truck has caused the closure of southbound lanes of U.S. 27 near Clewiston Wednesday.Florida Highway Patrol reports that the truck overturned Wednesday morning at the intersection of U.S. 27 and Evercane Road, just east of Clewiston.All southbound lanes were closed while crews clean up the approximately 25 tons of sugarcane that spilled onto the roadway.The roadway has since reopened.No injuries are reported. 468

CLEVELAND — The morning of Nov. 23 started out like any other for Amanda Zupancic. She’s a special education teacher in Cleveland. Around 11 a.m. that morning, in what would be her 3rd period class, she was in session with a middle school student and his mom on Zoom in the upstairs office of her west Cleveland home.She was suddenly interrupted with a loud noise.“I heard a glass-shattering crash downstairs,” she said. “I was like, 'hold on, I think someone is breaking into my house, just joking.' I didn’t think anyone would be breaking into my house in the middle of the day,” she said.But that is exactly what was happening.“There was a man walking though my baby gate with a knife in his hand walking upstairs,” said Zupancic. “He started threatening me, yelling at me, calling me names. He grabbed me upstairs into my bedroom.”The man began rummaging through her things, all the while Zupancic’s student and his family were still on that Zoom call listening from Lake County.In the 911 call, the student’s dad tried to explain the situation. “The teacher that teaches my son, somebody broke into her house we saw it on the Zoom,” said the student’s dad to a Lake County dispatcher.As the robber frantically searched for valuables, the dad gave as much detail to the dispatcher as he could.“I guess she heard the man say, ‘Get on the floor. I’m going to cut your f-ing throat,’” he told the dispatcher.Zupancic told the man he could have her car keys but they were downstairs. He agreed she could go and get them. She said, instead of getting the keys, she let her two dogs out.“When I reached for my keys, instead I opened the gate and I have a German shepherd and a Great Dane-boxer mix. So the German Shepherd stood between myself and this guy, and the Great Dane Boxer mix went at him,” she said.It gave her enough time to think.“I just grabbed a pair of scissors and I chased him to the front door,” she said.She continued to chase him down her street.“I started chasing him with this pair of scissors, in my house shoes, down the street, yelling 'help me, help me, this guy robbed me,'” she said.Zupancic said a local contractor working on a house in her neighborhood saw the encounter and tackled the man to the ground and detained him until Cleveland police arrived.When they got there, they arrested Charles Derosett.Derosett is charged with aggravated robbery and felonious assault as well as other charges. He is a convicted felon, previously serving time behind bars for aggravated robbery.Zupancic is still shaken up. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Warmer water temperatures are bringing out the stingray encounters in San Diego. Thursday afternoon, 12 more people were stung just days after a similar incident involving 10 to 15 people Tuesday. “I’m not used to the beach I come from Arizona so like this is actually happening,” said Angelo La Rosa, who is visiting from Arizona. “It felt like something was digging into my skin,” said 13-year-old Phoenix Stofa, who was one of at least a dozen stung Thursday. RELATED: 10 to 15 people stung by stingrays in Coronado“Yeah, yeah they don’t want to get stepped on and that’s their only defense mechanism and they have a barb,” said Sgt. Damon Bassett, a lifeguard in Coronado. Basset said he feels for those who get stung. “Anytime you get some nice weather and some warm water people don’t know to shuffle their feet. Then they can come in contact and get stung.”“Don’t walk on the water like you would on land,” Bassett added. A painful lesson for some, but still a day at the beach. “I just thought of the shark movies but it wasn’t a shark alert it was just a stingray. If it was a shark alert, I would have been more,” La Rosa said. If you do happen to get stung, lifeguards say you should soak the affected area in hot water to deactivate the venom. 1291
