WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. official says the Navy has upheld the firing of the aircraft carrier captain who urged faster action to protect his crew from a coronavirus outbreak. Captain Brett Crozier was fired back in April by Navy leaders who said he created a panic by sending his memo pleading for help to too many people. That decision is a complete reversal for Adm. Mike Gilday, the top Navy officer. Read the investigation here.Gilday also extended the blame for the ship's pandemic crisis and delayed the promotion of the one-star admiral who was also onboard. He concludes that both men made serious errors in judgment. The U.S. official spoke anonymously to describe a report not yet public. The spread of the coronavirus aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt while on deployment in the Pacific in March exploded into one of the biggest military leadership crises of recent years. 892

(AP) -- Bigotry toward Asian Americans and Asian food has spread steadily alongside the coronavirus in the United States. Distorted information about the virus that first appeared in China has led to a revival of century-old tropes about Asian food being dirty. Social media has been flooded with racist memes portraying Chinese people as bat eaters responsible for spreading COVID-19. A coalition of advocacy groups said earlier this year that it had received more than 2,500 reports of hate and discrimination against Asian Americans across the country. In addition, Asian American businesses have been among those hardest hit by the economic downturn resulting from the pandemic. 690
You both were there for a photo op and used the victims as props. I am ashamed at how happy you both appeared and at the words of your husband. The orphaned child and Donald’s thumbs up. Sickening.— Gudlaug Hawkinson (@GudlaugHawkinso) August 9, 2019 262
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Rainwater run-off from the Tijuana River flooded parts of Monument Road, Thursday afternoon. Just up the hill is the border fence that separates Mexico and the United States. But that does not stop debris from flowing into San Diego. Residents in the area say this flooding happens every time it rains. Precipitation means the Tijuana River Diverter gets shut down, which brings in millions of gallons of stormwater run-off, including trash, raw sewage, chemicals, and diseases. To many, the stench is unbearable. “There’s a tire factory that’s dumping chemicals down there. There’s a car battery company dumping chemicals, you have every chemical and disease coming through here, and our poor Border Patrol has to go through it," resident, James Martin said. US Border Patrol's Swift Water Response team closed off Monument Road earlier in the afternoon, while monitoring the flow from above. Because of this toxic run-off, San Diego County announced they have block access to all beaches in the South Bay. They have also temporarily closed the trails at Tijuana River Valley Regional Park. 1123
