This week marks Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 3.6 million Americans face a risk of lead poisoning from lead-based house paint. The CDC says that even low levels of lead in the bloodstream can cause cognitive impairment in children that is irreversible.“As we observe National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, we urge people to take action,” said Patrick Breysse, PhD, CIH, Director of CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health. “Together, we can eliminate childhood lead poisoning as a public health problem by strengthening blood lead testing, reporting, and surveillance, while linking exposed children to recommended services. CDC is committed to help address this threat and improve health outcomes for our nation’s most vulnerable citizens – our children.”The CDC is encouraging parents to get their children’s lead levels checked by a doctor. The CDC says that the screening is covered for those on Medicaid. While homes older than 42 years old may contain leaded paint, other risks could come from the environment, and exposure to lead-containing products such as antique cookware and leaded crystal glassware. For more information on lead poisoning, click here. 1245

Top officials in the White House were aware in early 2019 of classified intelligence indicating Russia was secretly offering bounties to the Taliban for the deaths of Americans, a full year earlier than has been previously reported. That's according to U.S. officials with direct knowledge of the intelligence. The assessment was included in at least one of President Donald Trump’s written daily intelligence briefings at the time, according to the officials. Then-National Security Adviser John Bolton also told colleagues he briefed Trump on the intelligence assessment in March 2019.On Saturday, the Director of National Intelligence denied that Trump had been briefed on the intelligence."I have confirmed that neither the President nor the Vice President were ever briefed on any intelligence alleged by the New York Times in its reporting yesterday," DNI Director John Ratcliffe said. On Monday, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany suggested that the intelligence community had not come to a conclusion on the information. "There was not a consensus among the intelligence community," McEnany said earlier on Monday. "And, in fact, there were dissenting opinions within the intelligence community, and it would not be elevated to the President until it was verified."Also on Monday, eight Republican lawmakers attended a White House briefing about explosive allegations that Russia secretly offered bounties to Taliban-linked militants for killing American troops in Afghanistan. Members of Congress in both parties are calling for additional information and consequences for Russia. Republicans who were in Monday's briefing are expressing alarm about Russia’s activities in Afghanistan and urging the administration to hold Russian President Vladimir Putin accountable. Eight Democrats are to be briefed Tuesday morning. 1847

Thousands of California's weary wine country residents are confronting yet another devastating wildfire. The Glass Fire has scorched more than 66 square miles and destroyed about 95 structures. It's the fourth major fire in three years in the Napa-Sonoma area. The region is nearing the third anniversary of a 2017 wildfire that killed 22 people. For many, seeing the blaze come over the iconic ridges was a painful reminder of the losses in 2017. The sheriff acknowledged “fire fatigue." Further north, a wildfire burning in rural Shasta County has killed three people and destroyed nearly 150 buildings.Since the beginning of the year, there have been over 8,100 wildfires that have burned well over 3.8 million acres in California, Cal Fire said. This wildfire season has claimed the lives of 29 people after three more people died in the Zogg fire this week. 871

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (KGTV) — National Park Service biologists say they're seeing a boom in mountain lion births this summer in the Santa Monica Mountains and Simi Hills areas.Between May and August, researchers have seen 13 total kittens born to five mountain lion mothers. This is the first time this many mountain lion dens have been found in such a short time period during the 18-year study, according to the National Park Service. A total of 21 litters of kittens have been marked at the den site. Previously, the most dens found in one year for the study was four in 2015."This level of reproduction is a great thing to see, especially since half of our mountains burned almost two years ago during the Woolsey Fire," said Jeff Sikich, a wildlife biologist who has been studying the mountain lion population at Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. "It will be interesting to see how these kittens use the landscape in the coming years and navigate the many challenges, both natural and human-caused, they will face as they grow older and disperse."Since 2002, NPS has been studying mountain lions around the Santa Monica Mountains to determine how they survive in a fragmented and urbanized environment. To track the mountain lions, researchers wait until the mother leaves to hunt or feed. While researchers are tracking her movements, other researchers will approach the den to catalog the kittens and place a unique tag on the ear of each animal. These tags help researchers identify them in the future. 1533

This weekend, most Americans will set their clocks back one hour Saturday night as everyone reverts back to standard time.Every state except Hawaii and Arizona observe Daylight Saving Time in the summer months. The idea of Daylight Saving Time has been around for more than a century for a variety of reasons, including more evening daylight and saving energy.Germany was the first country to experiment with it, and it wasn't fully adopted in the United States until 1918 when "An Act to save daylight and to provide standard time, for the United States" was passed.Once this law was passed, it established the time zones we use today — Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific — and specified when Daylight Saving Time would begin and end.Two years later, however, the Daylight Saving Time option was repealed and left up to localities to decide whether or not they'd change their clocks.Nationwide Daylight Saving Time returned for almost three years during World War II when President Franklin Roosevelt instituted "War Time," or year-round Daylight Saving Time.It wasn't until 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson signed the Uniform Time Act, which ended a lot of confusion by setting standards for when Daylight Saving Time would begin and end. It also required every state to participate unless a state voted to keep the entire state on standard time.Daylight Saving Time was extended with the Energy Policy Act of 2005, so now most of the United States change clocks on the second Sunday in March and again on the first Sunday in November.Follow Storm Shield Meteorologist Jason Meyers via the Storm Shield app on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.
