Students across the country are spelling their way to greatness in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program. Students are in the process of advancing from classroom to school to region to earn a spot in the national finals in National Harbor, Maryland, in May 2020. Spellers who win their school spelling bee but don’t advance past their region can keep their dream alive of competing in the national spotlight. For the third year in a row, the Bee is offering its RSVBee program. It is a participation pathway that qualifies more spellers for the national finals. It is the only way students living in unsponsored regions can advance and is an additional opportunity for the best spellers in the country to compete on the national stage. The Bee created RSVBee with an eye toward fairness, accessibility, maintaining the integrity of the competition and delivering a quality Bee Week experience for all. The Scripps National Spelling Bee has more than 250 sponsors across the country who support the program and make it possible for local students to advance. Still, there are unsponsored sections in the U.S., and some of its sponsored regions have grown so large and competitive that RSVBee is the Bee’s answer to address access and fairness. “We’ve known for many years that large numbers of excellent spellers have had limited access to the national finals or no pathway at all,” said Paige Kimble, executive director of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. “We created RSVBee to address this very issue and make our iconic competition accessible to a wider population of children who love words and language and enjoy competitive spelling.” The Bee is narrowing the field of the national finals to about 400 competitors, down from last year’s 562, with the intent of providing spellers and their families with a more personalized, quality experience during Bee Week. Parents can apply on behalf of their child for one of about 140 total RSVBee invitations at 1975

Johnson was flying a bombing mission in 1966 when he was shot down and wounded. He was imprisoned in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton" for nearly seven years, much of it in solitary confinement. Johnson was elected to Congress in 1991 and vowed to stay a maximum of 12 years, but eventually served more than double that. 629

Sleep traits could be a risk factor for breast cancer, new research suggests. Women who said they preferred to get out of bed early were found to have a lower risk of breast cancer than those who stay up late. However, experts cautioned that other breast cancer risk factors such as alcohol consumption and being overweight have a greater impact than sleep and said there was no reason to change your sleep patterns. One out of 100 women who considered themselves morning people developed breast cancer, compared with two in 100 women who described themselves as evening people, according to the study, which was published Wednesday in the BMJ.The study also found that sleeping more than the average seven to eight hours per night was found to have a slightly increased risk of breast cancer. It also found there was little link with insomnia.Researchers used information from more than 400,000 women in two large data banks -- around 180,000 women from UK Biobank study and more than 220,000 women from the Breast Cancer Association Consortium study. Participants' preference for waking early or late was included in the data."It is important to note that these data do not suggest in any way that modifying sleep habits could eventually lead to a decrease in the risk of breast cancer," Luca Magnani, senior research fellow in the department of Surgery & Cancer at Imperial College London told the Science Media Centre."What they suggest is that it appears that the risk of breast cancer is associated with a genetic (thus not modifiable) trait that is in itself associated with a "morning" or "night" preference -- what we call 'larks' and 'owls'."According to 2016 figures from the 1700

Spotify is launching a new, slimmed-down version of its app as it works to win more users in developing countries. The world's biggest music streaming platform on Tuesday launched "Spotify Lite" on smartphones running Google's Android operating system across Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.It has been designed for users with slower internet connections or older smartphones with less storage. At only 10 megabytes, the new platform will be easier to download and can be used separately from the existing app for both free and premium streaming services.Spotify Lite will initially be available in 36 countries including Brazil, Mexico, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and India, where Spotify made its debut earlier this year."We have been very focused on expanding the company into India [and] the Middle East," Cecilia Qvist, Spotify's global head of markets, said at a tech conference in Hong Kong on Tuesday."This is a fantastic app to serve those networks ... equally strong, equally loud, but purposely built for emerging markets," she added.Spotify went public last year and has enjoyed strong growth. Earlier this year, it hit 100 million paid subscribers worldwide, and within six days of launching in India in late February, it claimed one million new sign-ups.Since then, the Swedish company has tried to tailor its offerings to users in different countries, especially in areas where many people are just starting to come online. In India, for instance, Spotify is now available in five different languages, according to Qvist.Asked about the company's growth projections, she declined to share how many users Spotify hoped to acquire with the new offering."But I feel really good about this one," she added. "Streaming is still growing." 1766

Since the Boeing 737 MAX has been grounded worldwide over safety concerns, the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association claims that its pilots have lost more than 0 million in compensation. The association claims that the grounding of the 737 MAX has caused Southwest Airlines to reduce passenger service by 8 percent. In response, the union representing Southwest Airlines' pilots is suing Boeing for misleading pilots about the aircraft. The union claims misrepresented the airworthiness of the aircraft. The union also claims that two deadly crashes involving the 737 MAX have "damaged the critical bond between pilots and passengers." "As pilots, there is nothing more important to us than the safety of our passengers," said Captain Jonathan L. Weaks, President of SWAPA. "We have to be able to trust Boeing to truthfully disclose the information we need to safely operate our aircraft. In the case of the 737 MAX, that absolutely did not happen."On March 13, 2019, the U.S. Department of Transportation ordered a review of the aircraft, which essentially forced airlines to ground the craft. This followed a pair of crashes over five months that killed 346 people. Initial findings show that the plane had a flaw in the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, which caused the plane to nosedive. Because of this and other safety concerns, the fleet of crafts have been grounded since March, and it could still be a number of months before the planes are deemed safe for flight. The are roughly 300 planes currently grounded."Boeing has the greatest respect for the men and women who fly for Southwest Airlines," Boeing said in a statement. "We are aware that their pilot union, SWAPA, has filed a lawsuit against Boeing related to the 737 MAX suspension of operations. We believe this lawsuit is meritless and will vigorously defend against it. We will continue to work with Southwest Airlines and its pilots on efforts to safely return the MAX to service."Although pilots are claiming a financial loss due to the grounding of the 737 MAX, the union for Southwest Airlines pilots want Boeing to take the time it needs to conduct a full investigation."It is critical that Boeing takes whatever time is necessary to safely return the MAX to service," Weaks said. "Our pilots should not be expected to take a significant and ever-expanding financial loss as a result of Boeing's negligence. We look forward to a solution that helps Boeing restore the confidence of both the flying public and the pilots who operate its aircraft."The Southwest Airlines Pilots Association has 9,700 members. 2613
