SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The California Department of Motor Vehicles announced new safety measures for its offices Thursday as the coronavirus pandemic continues across the state.Starting Thursday morning, every person who goes to a DMV location will get their temperature checked before they're allowed inside.Previously, only people getting in-car driving tests were subject to temperature checks.A DMV spokesperson told ABC 10News they'll follow CDC guidelines, only letting people inside if their temperature is below 100.4 degrees."We always follow the guidelines that are issued by the CDC," said DMV spokesperson Cynthia Moreno. "So, following their guidelines, we decided that it would be best to start taking the temperature of all of our customers and our employees to make sure that we follow the safety protocols."The temperature screening is in addition to safety measures already in place, which include mask requirements, social distancing, limited services available and hand-washing and sanitizing stations located throughout each field office.Because of all that, DMV officials say it's best to do as much as you can on the agency's website and avoid coming into the offices, if possible."We want to make sure the people who come to our offices feel safe," said Moreno. "There's a lot happening in the world right now. So, if you can do stuff from the comfort of your home, it's best to go online and see what's available." 1444

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Summer is almost here, meaning a slew of wild, new entertainment at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.Summer Safari returns to the Safari Park from May 25 to Sept. 1, bringing live music, arts and crafts, pop-up entertainment, up-close animal experiences, and more fun activities for families to enjoy.For the first time, the park will also host "family nights" on days the park is open until 8 p.m. On these nights, Monday and Tuesday from June 10 to July 30, special entertainment is planned, including bubble shows and evening cheetah runs.While Summer Safari is the big draw, guests will also be able to check out the park's new Walkabout Australia exhibit. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The message from nurses and caregivers Tuesday morning was clear, "it's a question of priorities for entire healthcare system." Frustration and anger built after a 27-month contract renewal was signed by Palomar Health's CEO, Diane Hansen. The contract details a base salary close to million, with potential of earning bonuses, increasing that amount. Frontline workers argue that because COVID-19 led to an increase of patients, and layoffs of caregivers and nurses, "the board should have invested in resources and more protective equipment. Some of the PPE is not even medical grade, and everyone who's been laid off should be brought back," said representative for California's nurses association, Sarah Gurling. Gurling joined other reps and nurses in a protest at Palomar Medical Center, arguing funds should have been allocated towards other resources within their facilities."Caregivers and nurses are the heart of the hospital. We know what's best for patients and each other. The hospital executives and the Palomar board has lost sight of that." Meahwhile, Palomar's health board chair, Richard Engel, stands behind his decision. He said Hansen has done a tremendous job and credits much of the hospital's success through her work. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Chicano Federation of San Diego County distributed hundreds of COVID-19 prevention kits in Barrio Logan to help prevent the spread of the disease in one of the county's hardest hit communities.The Chicano Federation partnered up with several local business to help provide over 500 kits to residents. Kits include children and adult face masks, disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer, and thermometers.According to our ABC 10News heat map, Barrio Logan's zip codes have reported some of the highest number of coronavirus cases in San Diego County. Data from local health officials shows Latinos and Hispanics make up over 60 percent of the number of positive cases in San Diego County."We think it's important to send the message that it's really important to stay alert, stay aware, to still follow the county and state messaging around COVID-19 including wearing masks and physical distancing," said Nancy Maldonado, President and CEO of The Chicano Federation of San Diego County. 1012
