SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego police responded Sunday to a deadly shooting the Rolando area.According to police, the incident happened at El Cajon Boulevard and 73rd Street after 12 p.m. Officers received a call of a single-vehicle crash.Police arrived to find paramedics treating a 35-year-old man who had been driving the vehicle suffering from life-threatening injuries to his torso. The injuries, however, were not from the crash, SDPD said.The man was taken to a nearby hospital but died of his injuries. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo visitors are getting their first look at two endangered Amur leopard cubs born at the zoo in April.The unnamed cubs, born April 26, will have their first veterinary exam this week which will reveal the sex of the cubs."The cubs are climbing up on the rocks, they are getting into the trees, sometimes listening to mom and sometimes not," said Kelly Murphy, senior wildlife care specialist, San Diego Zoo. "Their personalities are still developing, and I’m looking forward to see what they become."The cubs' mother, Satka, has ventured out with the newborns daily and is already showing her kids how to stalk and climb, the zoo says. The animals are being raised in the park's Africa Rocks leopard habitat.Amur leopards are the rarest of the big cat species on Earth. There are fewer than 100 Amur leopards believed to exist in the habitats of Russia and China. The species has been decimated in the wild due to loss of habitat and poaching for their thick coats. 1003

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Seven families are suing the company that runs the San Diego County Fair after they say members of their family contracted E. coli traced to the fair's livestock last summer.The lawsuit alleges the 22nd District Agricultural Association, which runs the annual fair and the fairgrounds, was negligent in its handling of the petting zoo area, failed to safely guard guests and warn of risks, properly inspect and clean, and screen animals at 2019's fair."People were getting sick all the way from June 8th to June 22nd, at least," said attorney Ben Coughlan, who is representing the plaintiffs. The County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency traced the outbreak to children that had visited the animal areas or the petting zoo at the fair, or had other animal contact at the fair, county health officials reported. Officials added that the illnesses had no link to any food facilities the children accessed.The family of 2-year-old Jedidiah King Cabezuela, from National City, is also represented in the suit. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police say their recruitment numbers are up, in part due to their innovative recruitment strategies.In a presentation at the Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee, data showed they've hired more people in 2018 compared to 2017 and 2016. "We had 63 candidates that applied for there and are in the academy, that was the largest, highest number academy we've had in 25+ years," Lt. Steve Waldheim, with SDPD's Backgrounds and Recruiting Unit said.So far this year, the department's hired 94 total officers, 15% are women.Here's the breakdown:2016: 3,229 took written exam, 137 hired2017: 3,184 took written exam, 126 hired2018: 2690 took written exam, 198 hiredWaldheim said their recruitment officers are doing a better job selecting applicants and preparing them for the hiring process, creating a lower drop off rate."The more officers we put on the street, the safer it is for the community, the faster response times we have," Waldheim said they need to fill 175 vacant positions, and to do so, they've gotten creative.Those innovative ways include everything from going to schools, military bases, Comic Con, working with the Padres to advertise and getting on social media."One of the biggest challenges is our unemployment rate," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's most popular hiking spots may become a little easier to get to — before the hike up, that is.County planners will consider whether to purchase about 84 acres of land from the Taylor Family Trust to help construct a parking lot on State route 67 to help hikers access the trail head.Currently, hikers and runners park along SR-67 and on surrounding neighborhood streets and run or hike along the highway and private or state-owned lands to access the county's utility road that leads up to the popular North County landmark."The most popular route to Potato Chip Rock is currently accessed by hikers parking on the shoulders of SR 67 and on nearby neighborhood streets, which poses safety concerns. Hikers park their vehicles on the shoulders of SR 67 and traverse private or State-owned land to access the City of San Diego’s utility road to Potato Chip Rock, which hikers use as a trail," the County Board of Supervisors plan says.RELATED: San Diego County park rangers recommend these trails in 2019Otherwise, hikers would have to park at Lake Poway Park to hike up Mount Woodson 7.5 miles to reach the Potato Chip Rock. The 84-acre plot could provide access to the county land and allow for off-road parking, the board says.The plot of land would be large enough for parking to serve those accessing the eastern route of Mount Woodson as well as the county road up to the rock.
