SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV)-- While protesters in the streets are loud, some are taking a much quieter approach to support the Black Lives Matter movement. One viral post is driving people to many Black-owned businesses in San Diego. The magical seasonings behind David Bankhead's soul food are a secret. But the owner of Bankhead Mississippi Style Cookin' in Spring Valley says what is not a secret are the racial tensions still evident in America."You know I come out of Mississippi, so I was born into some of the things that are going on right now," Bankhead said. He says he supports the protests. He even took part in #blackouttuesday on his restaurant's social media pages. But the violence, he cannot condone. "When you're tearing up stuff in your own neighborhood, that's not helping the cause at all," Bankhead said. Since opening up his restaurant eight years ago, he had seen great success. But since the coronavirus pandemic hit, his shop has taken a 40% hit. On Tuesday, however, his store was suddenly packed."We had all nationalities come in," manager, Betty King said. "Hispanics, Caucasians, obviously African-Americans... it was it was amazing."It was the day an Instagram post calling San Diegans to support black-owned eateries went viral. Bankhead Mississippi Style Cookin' was one of the many listed on the post. 1344

SHOREWOOD, Wisc. — Just hours before opening night, Shorewood High School canceled the play 'To Kill a Mockingbird.'"Due to concerns regarding potential protests related to the production, we've concluded that the safest option is to cancel the play," a statement from Shorewood School District superintendent Bryan Davis read.Patience Phillips said her three children spoke out against the play."They protested the use of the word in the play," Phillips said. It's the use of the N-word that is said by different actors in the play."The fact that word came out of their mouth multiple times," said a sophomore protestor who did not want to be named. "It sat with me differently. It felt weird." "When you have students of color telling you they are not comfortable with the word, that's a problem,"  Phillips said. The play is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee. The students in the cast say the word is important."Us doing the show without the word, we felt like we couldn't really tell the story," a cast member named ZeZe said."And when using that word we were really trying to be considerate and telling them this is not something to hurt you," another castmember, Nimya, said. "I'm in show, I'm black and I'm not getting offended but I guess that still wasn't clear."Both sides say they did not want to see it come to this."We never asked for the play to be canceled," Phillips said."It's an issue that needs to be talked about everywhere and the fact that it's being canceled, what message is that sending,"  Zeze said. Both the students and the protestors are wondering if the play was chosen back in June, why did it take until opening night for the school district to address it."The District should have done more outreach to engage in dialogue about the sensitivity of this performance with the Shorewood and greater Milwaukee community.  Moving forward, the District will continue to encourage staff and students to engage in meaningful performances surrounding contemporary issues with the appropriate amount of outreach and dialogue," a statement from the school district said.  2185

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Tropical Storm Iota formed Friday in the Caribbean and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane as it approaches Central America. This is the 30th named storm in 2020's record-breaking Atlantic hurricane season. The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Iota could bring dangerous wind, storm surge and rainfall to Nicaragua and Honduras by Sunday night. Iota currently has sustained wind speeds of 40 mph and it is expected to strengthen as it approaches land. The National Hurricane Center predicts Iota will bring 20-to-30 inches of rain across the Nicaragua and Honduras border, and could drop 4-8 inches of rain across portions of northern Colombia, Panama, and Costa Rica. It could wreak havoc in the same region where people are still grappling with more than 120 deaths and many more missing in the aftermath of Hurricane Eta. Eta then regained strength and soaked the west coast of Florida before moving into the southeast states and causing severe flooding in North Carolina on Thursday. Scientists say climate change is causing wetter, stronger and more destructive storms. 1117
