DETROIT — Kia is recalling nearly 295,000 vehicles in the U.S. because the engines can stall or catch fire. The recall comes a week after Kia and affiliated Korean automaker Hyundai were fined by the U.S. government for allegedly delaying recalls. The recall covers certain 2012 and 2013 Sorento SUVs, 2012 through 2015 Forte and Forte Koup cars, and 2011 through 2013 Optima Hybrid cars. Also included are 2014 and 2015 Soul SUVs and 2012 Sportage SUVs. Kia says in documents posted Saturday by the U.S. government that no manufacturing defect has been found, but it’s recalling the vehicles to mitigate any risk of fire. Kia will notify owners starting Jan. 27. 671

DENVER — Footage from a Ring Bell camera shows a runaway UPS truck careening backward down a street in a Denver neighborhood, and smashing into several parked vehicles.Erika Gaum said she was in her front yard with her young son cleaning out flowerbeds a few minutes before the crash happened on Dec. 2."I had just gone in to put him down for his nap," she said. "About 10 minutes later, I heard this massive explosion."Gaum said she peeked out the front door and saw a UPS truck pushed up against the neighbor's cars.Moments later, another neighbor came out and told her the UPS truck had sideswiped the Gaum's tow truck and trailer, too."After it hit the trailer, it kind of skidded along and then hit the fender and ripped the tire and bent the rim," she said.Gaum added that the impact knocked out rivets, busted a mirror, flattened two tires and knocked out a headlight. The UPS truck then slammed into three parked cars, one of them a Ford Taurus.Gabriela Agustin-Sanchez said her dad had put a lot of hard work and hard-earned cash into fixing up the Taurus."Cars are his passion. He's always working on cars, but that one was one of his most prized possessions, and he was very proud of it," she said. The back of that Taurus is now a crumpled heap of metal, rubber and plastic.According to the police report, the UPS driver, 21-year old Sagar Garung, said he was stopped to make a delivery and when he jumped back in and attempted to start the truck, it failed to start."Then it jumped out of gear and traveled southbound in reverse, at an unknown rate of speed, and collided with (Gaum's truck and the three cars,)" the report stated.Gaum said she and her husband own an auto shop."We're heading into the holidays and this is our work truck, so we kind of need some action," she said.Gaum added that she reached out to UPS several days in a row, to ask about the status of their damage claim, and each time was told "somebody will contact you by the end of the day.""That has yet to happen," she said.KMGH reached out to UPS to ask if there was an issue with the brakes, if the driver is still working for UPS, if there was another person on board the UPS truck, why the delay in reaching out to the victims and if UPS will be taking care of the damage.Matthew O'Connor, the senior manager of media relations, sent an email stating: "We’re thankful that everyone is safe. UPS’s highest priority is the safety of our employees and the communities we serve. We’re investigating the situation, cooperating with the responding authorities on their investigation, and will respond accordingly."Garung was issued a citation for operating an unsafe vehicle.Gaum said with everything that has happened in 2020, she's grateful no one was injured in the crash.Still, she hopes UPS responds sooner, rather than later."Call me UPS. Give me a call," she said. This story originally reported by Lance Hernandez on TheDenverChannel.com. 2937

DENVER – If your weekend plans don’t involve stargazing, you might consider changing that. This weekend, the annual Lyrid meteor shower will hit its peak. The meteor shower is active between the dates of April 14 and April 30, according to NASA, but peak viewing will occur on Sunday, April 22 with as many as 18 meteors per hour. The Lyrid meteor shower gets its name from the constellation Lyra, which is where the meteors often appear to radiate from. However, you should be able to see shooting stars throughout the night sky.The early-morning pre-dawn hours after the moon sets are typically the best time to watch for meteors, as that’s when the sky is usually at its darkest. 687

DENVER – The Denver City Council on Monday approved a pilot program to allow for a supervised injection site in city limits by a 12-1 vote, though the Colorado General Assembly will have to pass a measure allowing for such sites before anything can move forward. If approved, Denver would be the first city in the United States to have a safe-use injection site. Philadelphia and New York City have similar proposals in the works. The council passed the measure 12-1 after it passed its first reading last week in an 11-1 vote. The Denver measure allows for a pilot program that will allow for a supervised injection site for two years where intravenous drug users can use under supervision and where trained staff will also be able to administer Narcan, an overdose antidote, and medication that blocks the effects of opioids. The measure was put forth by councilman Albus Brooks, who has pushed the measure due to the high numbers of fatal overdoses in Colorado – one-fifth of which occurred in Denver last year."Many of our neighbors in Denver are struggling with this public health crisis. To do nothing would be a grave injustice. That's simply not who Denver is," Brooks said in a statement Monday evening. "The pilot program created by this ordinance is a sign that our city is committed to saving the lives of our neighbors."No public funds will be used for the site; it would be operated by a nonprofit or government entity that works with addicts. The site will have to be more than 1,000 feet from schools and daycare centers. The injection site would provide access to clean syringes, fentanyl testing strips, overdose antidotes and counselors who can refer people for substance use disorder treatments and medical and mental health services.Council members toured a similar injection site in Vancouver earlier this year as the General Assembly considered a safe injection site bill, which ultimately failed. The General Assembly will have to pass a new bill that allows for local municipalities to start such safe injection sites before Denver’s can move forward. Brooks has said he had higher hopes for such a measure with Democrats now in control of the state Senate."Our current policies around drug use aren’t working and overdose deaths are rising rapidly," said Lisa Raville, the executive director of the Harm Reduction Action Center. "A Denver supervised use site would significantly impact rates of public injection and help connect drug users with treatment. This is just one step we can take to start battling this problem, and I'm very grateful to Councilman Brooks and the Denver City Council for taking action tonight."In response to the measure’s passage Monday, Mayor Michael Hancock said he was “proud” of the council’s vote.“We need to start looking at more innovative ways to approach the #opioidcrisis,” he said in a tweet.Councilman Kevin Flynn made the lone vote against the measure. In a statement, he said he believed that the site would enhance drug use."I voted no after much struggle with the points for and against it, but was ultimately convinced that a supervised injection site enables continued drug usage more than it reduces or mitigates it," Flynn said in a statement. "I advocate for what I think has been show to be a more effective policy, which is to widely distribute naloxone, the antidote for opioid overdoses, throughout the community and to find people with addictions where they are dying, and not invite them in to safely inject in front of us." 3516
