BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Education said Thursday every primary and middle school student in mudslide-hit Zhouqu County will have new textbooks when the new school semester starts."We have asked publishing houses to rush to print and prepare textbooks for Zhouqu. All of them promised to have them ready by the start of the new semester," ministry spokeswoman Xu Mei said Thursday.Schools in Zhouqu in northwest China's Gansu Province are scheduled to begin the autumn semester on Aug. 16.Some 334,075 volumes of textbooks and support material for Zhouqu's primary and middle school students were kept in a storehouse belonging to the local Xinhua Bookstore that was destroyed by the massive mudslides.Primary and middle schools in Zhouqu need 180,000 textbooks for the new semester, the Ministry of Education said.Xu said the publishing houses will send the textbooks to the provincial Xinhua Bookstore in Gansu before Aug. 14.The ministry also vowed to ensure the supply of textbooks to other areas severely hit by natural disasters, including flood-hit Jilin Province in northeastern China.In addition, Xu Mei said poor students from disaster-hit areas entering college will receive preferential treatment in enrolment and in application for loans.The ministry has asked colleges to investigate the financial situation of freshmen from the disaster-hit areas.The death toll due to the massive mudslides in Zhouqu in the early hours of Sunday had, as of Wednesday, risen to 1,117, with 627 still missing.

BEIJING, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Tuesday concluded his two-day official visit to Bangladesh and started his trip to Laos, the second leg of his four-nation tour.In Dhaka on Tuesday, Xi met separately with the country's opposition leader, parliament speaker and president.In talks with Khaleda Zia, chairperson of Bangladesh's main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Xi lauded what Zia has done to promote the Sino-Bangladeshi relationship.He said China appreciates very much Bangladesh's precious support on issues concerning China's core interests like the issues of Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang.He said China supports Bangladesh's economic development and will continue to do its best to help the south Asian country.Zia said China is a close and friendly neighbor of Bangladesh. "Bangladesh always regards China as an important strategic partner," she said.Talking with Bangladeshi Parliament Speaker Abdul Hamid, Xi spoke highly of the comprehensive development of bilateral relations since both countries established diplomatic relations 35 years ago.He reiterated China's commitment to work with Bangladesh to push forward their comprehensive partnership of cooperation. BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- The value of the gross output of China's auto industry surged 49 percent year on year to 2.086 trillion yuan (308 billion U.S. dollars) in the first half of the year, officials at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said Monday.At the same time, total export and import volume jumped 84 percent year on year to 50.66 billion U.S. dollars, according to a MIIT statement posted on its Web site.From January to July, China's auto output and sales both exceeded 10 million units. In July, China's auto output stood at 1.29 million units, up 16 percent year on year, while sales stood at 1.24 million units, up 15 percent year on year, MIIT said.Also, the Chinese government decided in June to extend an auto replacement subsidy program by six months until Dec.31 this year.Begun in June of 2009, the subsidy aims to help get highly polluting vehicles off the road while stimulating automobile consumption.Under the program, consumers who trade-in their used small-and medium-sized trucks and some mid-sized passenger vehicles for a new one are eligible to receive a subsidy of 3,000 to 6,000 yuan.By the end of May, the Chinese government had handed out 1.7 billion yuan in subsidies for 127,000 trade-in vehicles.The subsidy program has boosted domestic automobile spending by 15 billion yuan, according to officials at China's Ministry of Commerce.

HANGZHOU, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Accompanied by lively Chinese folk tunes, a group of men were playing the tambourine at a party on Saturday evening in Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province.Those watching could hardly have imagined that the energetic performers,all dressed in red and white costumes, were drug addicts who were also infected with HIV, even if the duplicate short crew cuts they wore somehow provided a hint of their unusual condition.One of the performers, surnamed Yue, said the group had practiced for more than a month to stage the best possible performance at the annual party of the drug rehab center, which fell on June 26, the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.As China's first drug rehab agency to offer centralized treatment of HIV-infected addicts, the center has helped some 200 addicts beat their drug habits since 2003.Among 2,200 drug users receiving compulsory treatment in the center, 65 have tested positive for HIV.Now, they must obey a regular daily schedule, including three meals, physical exercise, entertainment and skill training that will enable them to earn a living after returning to their regular lives."I've adapted well to the regular life in the center. My physical and mental conditions are getting better,"said Yue, 34, who contracted HIV after sharing syringes with other drug users.Yue began using drugs in his hometown in southwestern Guizhou Province. After seeking a job in Zhejiang, he tried to kick the habit, but failed."The infection of HIV doubled my misery. Fortunately, I've gone through the hardest time in my life following the one-year free treatment here. Now I just want to live," he said.Unlike other drug addicts, many of those who are infected with HIV were forced into being admitted to the rehab center against their wills. Further, some even exhibited their intentions of taking revenge on society, said Ni Zhanwen, a police officer in charge of the center's management of HIV-infected inmates.In November 2008, a newcomer scratched the face of Ni's predecessor, Wang Jianxin, causing him to bleed.Wang was taken to the provincial center for disease control and prevention. He was asked to take medicine and be tested for HIV, which could be transmitted through blood.But Wang came back to work three hours later. "If I quit the job, the inmates would've felt discriminated. That would have just added more difficulty to the center's work in the future," he said.In the past, police in the center wore protective clothing, gloves and gauze masks to prevent infection, due to a poor understanding of HIV, thus losing the trust of some inmates."We took off the protective outfits immediately after realizing the problem. But I've been concerned that the management staff could contract the virus in a bleeding fight or other accidents. Luckily, it has never occurred," Ni said.Besides potential health hazards, the center's police officers also suffered discrimination from others.A 27-year-old police officer, surnamed Meng, said his girlfriend left him after the girl's parents learned he worked in the drug rehab center.Last year, some 173,000 drug addicts were forced into treatment in China while 68,000 former addicts had stayed drug-free for more than three years, according to figures released in March in the 12th annual report on controlling drugs by the National Narcotics Control Commission.Statistics from a national database showed the county had about 1.33 million registered drug addicts by the end of 2009.
