SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s City Council voted 8-1 Monday evening to ease parking requirements for certain housing projects, which they say will make it easier for developers to build new homes. Mayor Kevin Faulconer said Monday that the current parking rules are outdated, but opponents say San Diego isn’t ready for the changes and that the city should focus on improving transportation. The plan gets rid of parking requirements for multi-family units in neighborhoods within half a mile of mass transit. “While it took way too long to get this ordinance approved, I praise my colleagues for finally getting it across the finish line,” said Councilmember Scott Sherman. “This is good news, but our work to fix San Diego’s housing crisis is nowhere near complete. We must continue pushing innovative strategies to improve housing affordability and we can’t wait two years for approval.”Before Monday’s vote, at least one parking spot per unit was required. The new policy gives residents who don’t have a car the option of paying less for housing. Supporters say the move makes it easier for developers to build and help the city reach it’s climate action goals. Those opposed say San Diego doesn’t have the public transportation to support the change. Critics also say roughly 94 percent of San Diego residents own a car. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Six San Diego inmates had to be treated with an overdose drug this month after deputies say they were showing signs of a fentanyl overdose.The San Diego Sheriff's Department (SDSO) said the overdoses happened just after 4 p.m. on Dec. 4 at San Diego Central Jail. The six inmates were given various doses of the drug Naloxone to reverse the effects of their overdoses.All inmates regained alertness and were taken to a nearby hospital for care.Deputies searched the cells of the affected inmates and discovered pills possibly laced with fentanyl, according to SDSO.The department says it's taking several approaches to stop drugs from entering jails, including x-ray body scanners, screening of visitors who may be smuggling drugs into jails, and overdose awareness and contraband detection techniques.SDSO says that about 70% to 80% of people entering their custody are using drugs at the time of arrest or have committed a crime during drug use. 974

And then getting ready so that as soon as I get sworn in, I can hit the ground running," Jacobs told ABC 10News.Jacobs says the new Congress' first priority will be helping the nation bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic. She says she'll insist any new round of stimulus spending will include funding to help small businesses and families, including child care.In her victory speech, Jacobs pointed out that at 31, she'll be one of the youngest members of Congress, and just the third woman to represent the San Diego region. Aeiramique Glass Blake, an activist and friend of Jacobs, says her election is inspiring to young San Diegans. "As young people, we need somebody who understands the dynamic and the perspective that we are coming from," says Glass Blake.Glass Blake says that while she knows Jacobs will work hard to represent all members of her district, she also realizes the importance of serving as a young woman in Congress. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo's 7-month-old endangered Matschie’s tree kangaroo has finally emerged from her mother's pouch. The young "joey" has not been named, but is beginning to spend more time outside her mom, Polly, according to zoo officials.“The joey, right now, cannot get enough things in her mouth,” said Breanne Barney, keeper at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “She’s constantly trying to eat leaves, greens, various vegetables, corn—even chewing on moms’ ears, tail, hands and feet!”The little kangaroo doesn't stray far from her mom though, as she learns to climb and maneuver outside of the pouch, the zoo says.Matschie’s tree kangaroos have an estimated gestation period of about 45 days and are about the size of a jelly bean when born. Once born, they crawl back into their mom's pouch and attach to a nipple to gain nourishment and grow. Tree kangaroos remain in the pouch for a few months.“Polly is an excellent mother, and consistently grooming her little one,” Barney said. “Due to their small population numbers, this joey provides a spark of hope for the future of this species.”The kangaroos are listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's list of threatened species. There are less than 2,500 of the kangaroos in their native habitats of Papua New Guinea and the Huon Peninsula.Unfortunately, they are hunted by humans for food and trade, according to the zoo. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police Saturday honored a local boy who risked his life to save his younger brother from drowning.Police say 10-year-old Ulises Frausto and his 7-year-old brother did not know how to swim when they were in a pool together. The brothers were holding onto the side of the pool when Frausto's brother lost his grip and sunk to the bottom.Despite not knowing how to swim, police say Frausto put his life on the line, swimming to the bottom of the pool to rescue his little brother.
