SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In a graphic display, a former charter boat captain demonstrated Wednesday how to make the knots found on Rebecca Zahau’s body, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.Zahau was discovered bound and hanging from a balcony of the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado in 2011.While the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office determined the death was a suicide, Zahau’s family believes she was murdered.The Zahau family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Adam Shacknai, the brother of Rebecca’s boyfriend and the only other person in the home at the time of her death.Lindsey Philpott used a lifelike mannequin covered with a white sheet to show the overhand and clove hitch knots, which, according to the U-T report, Philpott said were common for nautical uses.Shacknai works as a tugboat captain.Philpott said under cross-examination that both knots are simple and widely used, the Union-Tribune reported.The Zahau wrongful death trial, which was in its fifth day Wednesday, is expected to last four weeks. 1034

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Iconic TV host Regis Philbin, who has roots in San Diego television history, has died at the age of 88, multiple news outlets report.According to a family statement obtained by PEOPLE, Philbin passed away from natural causes Friday night.Philbin returned to his roots in 2018 with a visit to 10News.After a stint in the United States Navy, he moved to San Diego where he launched a career in broadcast. The icon was briefly a news anchor in San Diego when Channel 10, at the time known as KOGO, approached him about taking over as an anchor of the evening news.PHOTOS: Former 10News anchor Regis Philbin visits the 10News crew"This was the beginning of it all," Philbin said upon beginning his tour. He was able to book many top celebrities including Jerry Lewis, Ronald Reagan, Danny Thomas, and Liberace.His talk show, which was produced at the now KGTV studios from 1961 to 1965, aired live from 11:30 p.m. - 1:00 a.m. every Saturday night."The show became a big hit so it was time to go to Hollywood, I guess, so I did," said Philbin.Philbin moved his show to Los Angeles, before being hired in 1967 as the sidekick for a national talk show, "The Joey Bishop Show." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It’s approaching one year since a San Diego Navy Sailor was hurt in an explosion while on deployment, leaving him paralyzed.Saturday, community members rallied together to support wounded sailor, Kenton Stacy, on his journey to recovery. Hundreds of people gathered in Liberty Station for the Stacy Strong 5k.“We feel very blessed,” says Kenton Stacy’s wife, Lindsey. “All the love and support we’ve seen over the last year just has been amazing.”The event had live music, a silent auction, and awards for race winners. During this time last year, the Navy EOD tech was deployed in Afghanistan when an IED exploded while he was clearing out a hospital. The explosion left him paralyzed from the neck down.“It’s definitely been a very hard year… There’s been highs, there’s been lows,” says Lindsey Stacy. Her husband has not made it home from the hospital just yet but, today he was transported and joined family and friends at the event.“I just think he feels so blessed," she added.The funds for the event will go to the EOD warrior foundation. The organization provides financial assistance and resources to wounded active duty service members and veterans. Stacy’s “Alive Day” anniversary is November 9.  1270

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Memorial Day weekend will see the most travelers out and about than in the last 12 years.More than 41.5 million Americans will be traveling this weekend, a five percent jump from last year, according to AAA. The increase in nearly 2 million travelers also means longer delays. Transportation analytics company INRIX predicts travel delays could be up to three times longer than normal in some areas of the country.The worst times to hit the roads, rails, or the sky will be Thursday and Friday, as commuters and weekend travelers mix, AAA says.BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT: Check updated San Diego traffic conditions"Drivers should expect congestion across a greater number of days than in previous years, with the getaway period starting on Wednesday, May 23. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s the most wonderful time of the year and volunteers are spreading a little holiday cheer for those who are less fortunate. Just Call Us Volunteers are preparing a special Christmas dinner for hundreds of homeless. 30 gallons of stock, 75 pounds of green beans and more than 270 pounds of turkey are just some of the items being served on the dinner menu. Just Call Us Volunteers is strictly made up of volunteers who want to give back. The group will serve at least three homeless shelters around the county on Christmas Day. They offer food to at least “350 at the tent downtown, the Alpha Project tent. We probably got 65 at Rachel’s Women's Shelter and 65 at the San Diego Center for Children,” says Julie Darling, organizer of Just Call Us Volunteers. The food is donated from Specialty Produce, Cupcakes Squared and Sprouts Farmers Markets. The organization says their volunteer list is full for Christmas Day but they give back all year long. They encourage everyone to donate their time in the new year. 1042
