SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  An ex-con who kidnapped a coach and a 16-year-old baseball player from a field in Kearny Mesa at gunpoint and made the man drive him to Ramona, where he carjacked a 79-year-old woman to make his getaway, was sentenced Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus two other life terms.Ira Stringer, 48, was convicted last month of 13 felony charges, including kidnapping during a carjacking, kidnapping for extortion and assault with a firearm.Stringer has a long criminal history, including a 1997 conviction for a home-invasion armed robbery in Spring Valley in which he held a family overnight and threatened to kill them."You are the poster child for the three-strikes law," Judge Frederick Maguire told the defendant. "You've demonstrated that you're a danger to the community."Stringer was serving a 20-year sentence for robbery in Orange County when he was charged last year with abducting 27-year-old Dylan Graham and 16-year-old Jack Spencer from Hickman Field in Kearny Mesa, where Graham was giving the teenager a batting lesson on Dec. 23, 2015.Deputy District Attorney James Koerber said Stringer approached the victims holding a loaded .357 Magnum and demanded that he be driven to Ramona.Stringer told Graham that he had been in a gunfight and needed to get "far away," according to the prosecutor.During the 40-minute drive to Ramona, Stringer held the gun to Graham's head.Graham said he decided to do something, letting go of the steering wheel and jumping in the back seat in an attempt to get the gun away from Stringer.Graham said Stringer fired three shots, all barely missing him. The victim's car crashed, and was a total loss.Outside the car, Stringer acted like he was hurt and flagged down and carjacked 79-year-old Barbara Roulier and stole her car.Roulier, now 81, told Stringer she has forgiven him for what he did to her that day.Stringer robbed a convenience store in San Diego three days after the kidnapping and carjacking and a few hours after that, robbed a store in Orange County with a shotgun. 2083

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A second man has been charged in the smuggling of a Bengal tiger cub into the United States from Mexico on August 23, 2017.Eriberto Paniagua - who allegedly told officials at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry that the Bengal tiger cub at his feet was merely a “cat” - was indicted by a federal grand jury and made his first court appearance on Monday. According to the indictment unsealed today, the 21-year-old conspired with the driver of the car, 18-year-old Luis Valencia, and others to knowingly import the tiger cub into the United States. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- While face masks are required for everyone at San Diego International Airport, Southwest Airlines is taking it a step further.The airline said they are now requiring all passengers to don a face mask for the safety of crew members and other travelers.Southwest’s policy, which took effect Monday, has one exception -- children under the age of 2 will not have to wear a face covering.In a statement, Southwest said, in part: “If a customer is unable to wear a face covering or mask for any reason, Southwest regrets that will be unable to transport the individual. In those cases, Southwest hopes the customer will allow them to welcome them onboard in the future, if public health guidance, or other safety related circumstances regarding face coverings changes.”Before this, Southwest had already stepped up the cleaning and disinfecting of their planes. The airline is also booking a limited number of people on board.They’re also using HEPA air filters to circulate air through the cabin on every flight. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Uber Eats will begin testing a new service that will deliver food using drones in San Diego, the company announced Wednesday. Uber and San Diego were granted the winning bid by the Federal Aviation Administration last year to test the new delivery service, according to the company. Here’s how Uber says the system will work: After a restaurant loads the meal into the drone and the drone takes off, a system will notify a nearby Uber Eats delivery partner to meet the drone at a drop-off location. The orders will then be picked up and hand-delivered to customers. The company says the initial phase of testing in San Diego was done with McDonald’s, but that it will be expanded later this year to include more restaurants, including Juniper and Ivy. “We’ve been working closely with the FAA to ensure that we’re meeting requirements and prioritizing safety,” said Luke Fischer, Head of Flight Operations at Uber Elevate. “From there, our goal is to expand Uber Eats drone delivery so we can provide more options to more people at the tap of a button.
