MONROE, Ohio -- Authorities in Ohio have charged a 17-year-old driver whose classmate was killed when she crashed on the way to prom last month.The teen — Scripps station WCPO in Cincinnati is not naming her because she is a minor — is facing two counts of vehicular assault and one count of aggravated vehicular homicide, the Butler County Sheriff's Office announced Thursday.Prosecutor Michael Gmoser said he plans to keep the case in juvenile court.The Monroe High School student was driving three classmates to prom on April 27 when she crashed. Police previously said the driver was speeding on her way to prom when she attempted a course-correction and lost control of the 2013 Tesla on Millikin Road in Liberty Township and hit a telephone pole.?Kaylie Jackson, 17, was riding in the back seat and was not wearing a seatbelt, deputies said. She was ejected from the car through the windshield and flown to University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment. NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A woman's body was found last week in her apartment, where she lived with her four adult children. One of her children told police she may have died two years ago.Metro Nashville Police officials found Laronda Jolly's body in her bed with clothes piled on top of her, and officials say the body was in a significant state of decomposition.The body was discovered by the Davidson County Sheriff's Office when deputies were serving an eviction notice.Jolly lived in the apartment with her four children, all of whom are reportedly intellectually disabled. One of them said Jolly may have been in that position since 2018, according to police officials. The four of them have reportedly been living there since she died.A cause of death has not been determined. Her remains were sent to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy. The second-highest day was Monday, with just over 115,000 people hospitalized.Several mobile field hospitals are being erected in California to handle the growing surge of COVID-19 patients.In California alone, state officials reported 700 new hospitalizations on Tuesday. Doctors and nurses say they are treating patients in hallways and parking lots because of the lack of space for more people.The California Department of Public Health reports there are 0% ICU beds available in the large Southern California region, including Los Angeles and San Diego, as well as the San Joaquin Valley region in the center of the state.The record high number of people in the hospital with a transmissible disease is straining medical facilities, as well as staff.Leaders around the country say they are increasingly worried about staffing levels at medical facilities. At a time when there are surges in patients needing intense care, there are staffing shortages and staff balancing quarantine measures. Because “hot spots” are popping up almost everywhere, there are not many doctors or nurses who are available to help other regions.California says they are in need of about 3,000 temporary medical workers to meet the demand. NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) says it performed the world's first dual heart-lung transplant of a COVID-19 patient in September.The hospital says the patient, described as a young man, had cardiomyopathy — a disease of the heart tissue that can lead to heart failure — before he contracted COVID-19 in June.The procedure, which was completed on Sept. 24, was also VUMC's first heart-lung transplant since 2006. Dr. Ashish Shah performed the complex surgery, along with Dr. Matthew Bacchetta.Shah said the patient's battle with COVID-19 seriously damaged his lungs and may have also further damaged his heart. By September, the patient was critically ill with advanced heart and lung disease. He was referred to VUMC from the University of Mississippi Medical Center."He was slipping fast, in and out of the hospital and certainly by the time we operated on him, his heart was really done," Shah said.Bacchetta and Shah performed the transplant using both lungs and the heart from the same donor, which the hospital says is standard in dual transplants. VUMC says the organs were from a donor who had hepatitis C, and that the hospital is one of the first centers to use such organs for patients awaiting heart and lung transplants.They say the patient has since left intensive care and continues to recover at the medical center, where he is doing well.According to VUMC, a dual heart-lung transplantation is rarely performed in the U.S. and typically only done at high-volume transplant centers, like Vanderbilt."This transplant, like every transplant we perform, serves as a great example of the critical role of teamwork in leading to good outcomes," said Dr. Kelly Schlendorf, the medical director of VUMC's Adult Heart Transplant Program. (KGTV) — A nursing student's trip to a Starbucks in National City turned into an knock-down struggle and dramatic chase in pursuit of her laptop.With three finals next week, nursing student Jacqueline Ang spent the Friday using a computer at a library Bonita. "Grateful for the resource, but it's not the same," said Ang, who is wrapping up her first year in the nursing program at Southwestern College.It's not the same, because it doesn't have what she really needs: a year of notes. "It's devastating," said Ang.On Monday afternoon, she was studying with her MacBook Pro at a busy Starbucks on E. Plaza Boulevard. "Both earphones are in listening to lectures. One hand on my laptop, and the other hand taking notes," said Ang.Ang says she was at a table near the middle of the Starbucks when an older black teen in a hoodie walked in, and right up to her. He unplugged her earphones and turned to her computer. "Grabs it by the screen, closes it and starts running," said Ang.As the man ran off, Ang screamed to get someone's attention. She then took off after him. "When he's at the door, I'm able to grab him by the hoodie and bring him down. I'm saying, 'Please don't take it. Please don't take it,'" said Ang.On the ground, a struggle unfolded. Ang weighs just over 100 pounds."It's all that's on my mind. 'Omigod, everything I worked hard for is on that thing. I need that. I need to fight for that,'" said Ang.At some point during the struggle, she says the man was able to hand it off to another young man in a hoodie. Ang chased the other man, who slipped into a van in the parking lot. She was close behind, opening a side door. "I see three or four people in the van. I was holding onto the handle, running with the car as they're moving," said Ang.A bystander's short video shows her being dragged, before she let go. The incident left her with a sprained wrist and no laptop, but one big clue. Because Ang made the thieves' plans go awry, a witness was able to get the license plate number.National City Police asked 10News not to release the license plate in order to not endanger the investigation. A spokesperson says they see a handful of similar crimes every year, but haven't linked the suspects to any other incidents.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help Ang purchase a new computer. 2344
