Jayaratne, a senior leader in that country's Freedom Party, extended thanks for China's efforts to ensure the success of the conference on behalf of all participants.Co-chairman of ICAPP Standing Committee Jose De Venecia said China has made great contributions to the world's poverty alleviation cause, and so holding a conference on poverty alleviation in China was appropriate.He said the Kunming Proposal adopted in the conference will be submitted to the UN Millennium Development Goals summit scheduled for September.Later on Monday, Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang met with a delegation from the Thai Democrat Party led by Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban.More than 120 representatives from 57 political parties in 30 countries attended the conference. TORONTO, Canada, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and other leaders of the Group of Twenty (G20) members gathered in Toronto on Sunday for the group's fourth summit, which will focus on ways to secure the world economic recovery and address the economic challenges and risks.At the summit, the leaders will exchange views on ways to consolidate the recovery from the global economic and financial crisis and implement commitments from previous G20 summits while laying the foundation for sustainable and balanced growth.They will discuss a wide range of issues, including the world economic situation, the European debt crisis, "the Framework for Strong, Sustainable and Balanced Growth," the reform of the international financial institutions, the global trade and the strengthening of financial regulations, said a senior Chinese official.At the Pittsburgh summit, leaders of G20 members agreed to take action to address imbalances in the global economy by launching the Framework for Strong, Sustainable and Balanced Growth. The framework committed G20 members to evaluating their national policies to ensure they are collectively consistent with more sustainable and balanced trajectories of growth.President Hu is expected to deliver a speech at the summit to explain China's propositions on the world's major economic and financial issues, such as financial reforms and balanced economic growth, said Chinese officials.The Chinese president has participated in all the previous G20 summits -- the Washington summit in November 2008, the London summit in April 2009 and the Pittsburgh summit last September.The Toronto summit is being held at a time when the world economy is recovering but economic challenges and risks remain, posing threats to healthy growth."The global economy continues to recover faster than anticipated, although at an uneven pace across countries and regions. ISTANBUL, Turkey, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao's special representative and State Councilor Dai Bingguo and Turkish President Abdullah Gul on Tuesday vowed to boost bilateral ties and increase exchanges of visits by leaders and senior officials.Dai met with Gul on the sidelines of the third summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-building Measures in Asia (CICA) here. KABUL, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Tuesday called for continued support of the international community to the war-torn Afghanistan."We want to see a peaceful, stable and independent Afghanistan that enjoys development and good neighborhood," Yang said addressing one-day international conference on Afghanistan in the Afghan capital Kabul."We should respect Afghanistan's sovereignty, and work together for the realization of Afghanistan run by the Afghans," he stressed.To achieve the goal, he proposed four points including ensuring security, political reconciliation, speeding up economic reconstruction and enhancing international cooperation."We call on international community to channel more assistance to infrastructure and other projects that will bring immediate benefit to ordinary Afghans," Yang said.He added that it is important to enhance coordination between regional and international cooperation so that they will complement and reinforce each other.The international community, he said, should remain committed to bringing durable peace and stability to Afghanistan. BEIJING, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Drenched riverside towns in central and southern parts of China on Monday prepared for even more flooding as water levels in the country's huge rivers surged and rainstorms continued.In its latest update, the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said floods this year had left 823 people dead and another 437 missing as of Monday morning.The direct economic loss had mounted to 154.1 billion yuan, more than double that of previous flood losses incurred in any single year since 2000.Premier Wen Jiabao has urged local authorities to fully prepare for more floods and related disasters.More than 370,000 soldiers and residents now have been mobilized to beef up the flood prevention efforts in eight provinces and municipalities along the country's major rivers, the flood control headquarters said.
