Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe was set to officially retire on March 18, but according to a source familiar with the matter, he could be fired just days before and lose his pension after a more than two-decade career at the bureau. The embattled official abruptly stepped down at the end of January and has been on leave since that time.CNN has learned the FBI's Office of Professional Responsibility has recommended McCabe be fired and now the decision is up to Attorney General Jeff Sessions. The issue stems from findings in an internal Justice Department watchdog report that claims he misled investigators about his decision to authorize FBI officials to speak to the media about an investigation into the Clinton Foundation.A representative for McCabe declined to comment. That report, which has been complete for over a week, according to the source, has not been released publicly. The office is currently examining how investigations were handled at the department and the FBI in advance of the 2016 presidential election, including, notably, the Hillary Clinton email server probe."The Department follows a prescribed process by which an employee may be terminated. That process includes recommendations from career employees and no termination decision is final until the conclusion of that process. We have no personnel announcements at this time," Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said in a statement. The inspector general's report has taken on increased attention as President Donald Trump and his allies have railed against FBI officials like McCabe over the agency's handling of certain investigations and claims of political bias. The New York Times first reported the FBI recommendation. 1736

For months, many of us have done what we can to keep ourselves and families safe from the coronavirus. We have stayed home from events, worked from home and exercised caution when running errands, but for people who are obese, some have gravitated towards weight loss surgery as a way to protect themselves.According to medical experts, complications from COVID-19 can disproportionately affect people who are obese. In an August study, the Cleveland Clinic found patients with a body mass index of 30 or higher were found to be at a significantly higher risk for severe COVID-19, and those with a BMI of 35 and higher had a dramatically increased risk of death.“It’s been shown that people do worse with viral infections when they’re obese,” said Dr. Michael Snyder, medical director of bariatric surgery at Rose Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. “In addition, the success of a vaccine is limited in people that are obese, for any viral vaccine historically.”That August study by the Cleveland Clinic also found that when patients with obesity lose at least 5% to 10% of their weight, their risk of cardiovascular disease drops and their survival rate improves. Perhaps, that is why so many have decided to have different types of bariatric surgery to control their weight.“Obesity is really a pro-inflammatory condition and we think it really affects your T cell response; your ability to appropriately attack infection,” said Dr. Snyder.Amanda Kines-Phillips is one of those people. In February, she had wanted to get her weight more under control and decided to go through with a mini gastric bypass surgery. However, because of COVID-19 and the ban on elective surgeries, Kines-Phillips’ surgery was pushed back to July.In the four months since her mini gastric bypass, she has lost 55 pounds and feels healthier and better about health in case she contracts the virus.“I have two small daughters that I need to be there for the rest of my life and to be the best mom that I can be,” she said. “So to me [this surgery] is a life-changing tool.”Dr. Snyder says during a typical week, he performs 12 to 15 surgeries to help people control their weight. He says the four other doctors in his practice have been completely full as well since the pandemic began.“I have just been blown away,” said Kines-Phillips.Editor's Note: An earlier version of this article had an incorrect first name for Dr. Michael Snyder. 2423

Former Trump campaign aide Sam Nunberg said Monday that he is refusing to comply with a grand jury subpoena in the Russia investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller."Let him arrest me," Nunberg said in an interview with The Washington Post. "Mr. Mueller should understand I am not going in on Friday."The Post said Nunberg provided the paper with an apparent copy of a subpoena seeking documents related to President Donald Trump and nine others, and that Nunberg said he was asked to appear before the grand jury in Washington on Friday. The Trump campaign fired Nunberg in August 2015 after a series of racist Facebook posts came to light, and Nunberg indicated in interviews Monday there was still bad blood between the President and him but that he did not want to spend time cooperating with the investigation and Trump is right to call the probe a "witch hunt.""They want me to come in to a grand jury for them to insinuate that Roger Stone was colluding with Julian Assange," Nunberg said on MSNBC, referencing Stone, a controversial Trump ally, and Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks. He continued, "Roger was my mentor. Roger is like family to me. I'm not going to do it." 1210

Former Vice President Joe Biden will travel to Iowa on Tuesday to campaign for Democratic congressional candidate Abby Finkenauer and gubernatorial candidate Fred Hubbell.Aides to Biden had previously said he would likely steer clear of Iowa before the midterm elections to avoid drawing attention away from the candidates to his political future. His visit to the first-in-the-nation caucus state will likely do just that.Biden is considering a 2020 presidential run, a decision he has said will come after the midterms. He will campaign with Finkenauer, who is running against incumbent GOP Rep. Rod Blum in Iowa's 1st Congressional District, Hubbell and state Sen. Rita Hart in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday evening. The location for the event is to be determined.Biden endorsed Finkenauer, who was a volunteer coordinator for his 2008 presidential campaign, this summer."I've had the chance to know Abby for the past 11 years, way back from the days she was organizing volunteers in Iowa in 2007," Biden said in his statement endorsing her earlier this year. "During her time as a State Representative the last 4 years, she has stood up with courage and passion for working families across the state and I can't wait to see her work for a better tomorrow for our country." 1277

First lady Melania Trump spoke out against cyberbullying Monday as part of her Be Best campaign, warning against "destructive and harmful" uses of social media and once again highlighting a messaging rift between the East Wing and the West Wing."In today's global society, social media is an inevitable part of our children's daily lives," Trump said at a cyberbullying summit in Rockville, Maryland. "It can be used in many positive ways, but can also be destructive and harmful when used incorrectly. This is why Be Best chooses to focus on the importance of teaching our next generation how to conduct themselves safely and in a positive manner in an online setting."At the same time, President Donald Trump was on Twitter, railing against John Brennan, whom he called a "hack" and "the worst CIA Director in our country's history" as summit panelists discussed the need for adults to be "good digital role models" for children. Despite firing off multiple tweets Monday morning, none were about the first lady's Be Best initiatives or her speech. The President's well-known Twitter habit, exemplified last week by his harsh attack on former White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman, has drawn criticism and highlights the seeming disconnect between the East Wing and the West Wing."When you give a crazed, crying lowlife a break, and give her a job at the White House, I guess it just didn't work out. Good work by General Kelly for quickly firing that dog!" he tweeted. The first lady's spokeswoman sought to downplay any disconnect between the East Wing and the West Wing, calling the first lady "independent.""She's addressed this before. She is well aware of the criticism, but that will not deter her from doing what she feels is right. I would hope most people in this country are proud that they have a strong and independent first lady who only has the best interests of children at heart -- I know I am," the first lady's communications director Stephanie Grisham told CNN.In a White House with a President who makes his own rules -- especially on social media -- his wife has faced criticism for being unable to curb her own husband's behavior. Instead, she's made an independent choice to do what she can."She is aware of the criticism but it will not deter her from doing what she feels is right. The President is proud of her commitment to children and encourages her in all that she does," Grisham said in a statement.Responding to the apparent hypocrisy between the first lady's assertion that social media can be "destructive and harmful when used incorrectly" and the President's own habits, Grisham deflected."Rather than dissecting her remarks, let's focus on the countless children who struggle w bullying & online safety each day," she tweeted. She later described Trump's advocacy against cyberbullying as "a sincere campaign meant to help children."During her speech, the first lady acknowledged that children can be more aware of the "pitfalls" of social media than adults."Let's face it: most children are more aware of the benefits and pitfalls of social media than some adults, but we still need to do all we can to provide them with information and tools for successful and safe online habits," she said. 3246
