RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — Police say a man who was suspected of burglarizing a vehicle was fatally hit by another car as he fled the Southern California scene. The 35-year-old man allegedly stole property from a car in Riverside, California, around 9:30 p.m. Thursday. The man's name has not been released. Authorities say the vehicle’s owner confronted the man, who ran away while discarding the items from the car. As he fled, the man tripped and fell into the path of a 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander. Police say the Outlander struck the man, who later died at a hospital. The Outlander’s driver was not injured and is cooperating with police. 648

(AP) — A California appeals court says it's legal to have small amounts of marijuana in prison — so long as inmates don't inhale.The 3rd District Court of Appeal ruled that California voters legalized recreational possession of less than an ounce (28 grams) of cannabis in 2016, with no exception even for those behind bars.But the court says state law does prohibit smoking weed in prison. Prison officials can also still punish pot possession as a rules violation."According to the plain language of ... Proposition 64, possession of less than an ounce of cannabis in prison is no longer a felony," the court ruled Tuesday. But those old laws belie "a gradual change in attitude" first toward medical and eventually toward recreational marijuana."As a matter of public policy, his position may be sound," the judges wrote. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom and state legislative leaders have reached an agreement on a bill to temporarily protect people from evictions. Newsom announced the agreement on Friday. The bill would ban evictions for tenants who have not been able to pay their rent because of the coronavirus between the months of March and August. Tenants would have to sign a document saying they have a financial hardship because of the virus. The protections would continue beyond August if tenants can pay at least 25% of their cumulatively owed rent between Sept. 1 and Jan. 31. Evictions could resume on Feb. 1. 635
