The opioid crisis has had a devastating impact across the country.Now, doctors in one state are tackling the problem head on, and it starts with how they treat pain in the emergency room. When Dr. Donald Stader walks through his emergency room these days, it's almost like he's a different doctor. “I used to over prescribe opioids for the first several years of my career and residency,” he says. “I was giving them out like Tic Tacs, if you will.” All that changed a few years ago, when he met a woman overdosing on heroin. “She told me that she actually got hooked after being prescribed Percocet for an ankle sprain,” Dr. Stader says. “And one thing that struck me, earlier that day I had prescribed Percocet for an ankle sprain and thought that I was practicing really good medicine.” Now, he and his hospital, Swedish Medical Center, are a part of the Colorado Hospital Association’s ALTO Project, a program aiming to reduce the use of opioids in emergency rooms in the state, using alternative pain treatment.The program is paying off.However, experts say it's too late. The crisis is so bad, so simply improving prescription practices is not enough to combat opioid abuse. In an article published in JAMA Psychiatry, doctors say in addition to tighter drug restrictions, psychiatrists specializing in depression and suicide, along with new research and treatments, are needed. Now, they treat patients with medications like Tylenol and ibuprofen. For stronger pain, they use ketamine, bentyl and lidocaine, which is often used in the dentist’s office. Two million Americans struggle with opioid addiction and 42,000 people died of overdoses in 2016 alone. 1678

A lawsuit filed against the University of California system wants colleges to stop using SAT and ACT scores in the admissions process.The lawsuit was filed Tuesday on behalf of four students and several nonprofits. It claims standardized tests are discriminatory to people with disabilities, low-income students and minorities."These discriminatory tests irreparably taint UC’s ostensibly 'holistic' admissions process," the lawsuit states. "The mere presence of the discriminatory metric of SAT and ACT scores in the UC admissions process precludes admissions officers from according proper weight to meaningful criteria, such as academic achievement and personal qualities, and requires them instead to consider criteria that act as a proxy for wealth and race and thus concentrate privilege on UC campuses."Consequently, the UC admissions process — as deliberately operated by the Regents — creates formidable barriers to access to public higher education for deserving students from low-income families, students from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, and students with disabilities. The requirement that all applicants submit SAT or ACT scores systematically and unlawfully denies talented and qualified students with less accumulated advantage a fair opportunity to pursue higher education at the UC."The University of California is the largest public university system in the U.S., with 10 campuses and more than 280,000 students.The UC system said in a statement it is disappointed by the lawsuit since its officials are already making efforts to address the concern. The College Board, which administers the SAT, was also quick to respond. It said any allegation of the test being discriminatory is wrong and it focuses on combating educational inequalities.Universities across the country typically use standardized tests in their admissions processes, but some are phasing them out. A former business manager for late Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee was arrested Saturday in Arizona on charges including elder abuse, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.Keya Morgan faces felony charges of false imprisonment and grand theft from an elder and a misdemeanor charge of elder abuse, police said in a news release.A warrant had been issued for Morgan's arrest earlier this month following an elder abuse estate investigation that began in March 2018.Bail has been set at 0,000 and Morgan is expected to be extradicted to Los Angeles, police said.CNN has reached out to an attorney for Morgan.Among other things, Morgan is accused of collecting money from business transactions -- like autograph signing sessions in May 2018 that totaled more than 2,000 -- and not transferring the money to Lee.Lee died in November 2018 at age 95.His estate was worth more than million, but no one had clear authority to act on Lee's behalf, police said."Morgan exerted his control and influence over Lee," police said in the news release.Morgan also is accused of falsely imprisoning Lee when he took Lee from his Hollywood Hills home to what police described as a "secured Beverly Hills condominium" in the late night hours in June 2018.Police said Lee was "removed from Morgan's control" later that month when he was arrested by LAPD for making fake 911 calls in May 2018. Police said Morgan made the calls in order to make Lee believe he was in danger.Lee had a restraining order against Morgan Morgan reportedly became close to Lee after the death of his wife, Joan Lee, in 2017.Before his death, Lee was granted a temporary restraining order against Morgan that banned him from abusing, harassing or contacting Lee and required him to stay at least 100 yards away from him.At the time, Morgan denied the allegations."I have taken great care of Stan Lee for the past many years, and have never had a problem directly with Stan. I have a fantastic relationship with him for the past many years as he has stated countless times on the record and I literally saved his life once," Morgan told TMZ in June 2018. A man killed four people during a stabbing rampage in Southern California before officers found his car parked outside a 7-Eleven convenience store and arrested him, authorities said.In addition to the people killed, the attacker left two wounded in multiple crime scenes in Garden Grove and Santa Ana, police said.The victims killed included two people at the suspect's apartment complex, a 7-Eleven security guard and one more person at a Subway restaurant.Apartment stabbings: 2 killedThe mayhem started Wednesday when police received a burglary call shortly after 4 p.m. local time, Garden Grove police Lt. Carl Whitney said. Two people said they'd come home and found their apartment burglarized.As officers prepared to respond to the apartment burglary, another call came in about 20 minutes later about a robbery at a bakery in Garden Grove in which an unknown amount of cash was taken.The same suspect broke into the apartment then drove his silver Mercedes to the bakery, police said. From the bakery, he returned to the apartment, got into an altercation and fatally stabbed two people, Whitney said.The suspect lived in the same apartment complex and it's unclear whether he knew the victims. At the time, officers did not know that the apartment and bakery incidents were connected.Gas station and business: 2 woundedJust after 6 p.m., officers got a robbery siren alarm at an insurance business in Garden Grove. The suspect had stabbed a woman at the business, stolen money and taken off, police said. "This female employee was very brave. This guy was armed with knives -- she fought as best as she could," Whitney said.By then, officers had talked to several witnesses and realized it was the same suspect involved in the previous incidents. They sent out an alert on his car as undercover detectives searched parking lots and nearby streets.Shortly after, police got another call of a man stabbed in the back while pumping gas and his nose nearly slashed off by the same suspect."Again, multiple scenes going on at the same time," Whitney said. "I've worked here for 30 years. This is the first time I've ever seen something like this where we have a suspect kill four people in one day and attack other people that are just innocent victims. It's pure evil."The woman and the man were hospitalized with serious injuries and are expected to survive, police said.Attacks at stores: 2 more killedWitnesses told officers the Mercedes was last seen headed toward Santa Ana and investigators sent undercover detectives in that direction.They saw the car parked at a 7-Eleven and police surrounded the convenience store. The suspect came out carrying a knife and a handgun, and police confronted him and arrested him, authorities said. Investigators discovered he'd stabbed the security guard to death and cut out his gun from his belt, Whitney said.While clearing the scene, they were told the suspect had also killed one person during a robbery at a Subway restaurant before he went to the 7-Eleven -- both in Santa Ana, police said. Law enforcement agencies from both agencies worked on the crime scenes.There are no known connections between the suspect and the victims, and the motive appears to be robbery, Whitney said."These crimes have nothing to do with hate or race," he added "The suspect is Hispanic and so are most of the victims."Authorities have not identified the suspect.Santa Ana and Garden Grove are both in Orange County about 35 miles from Los Angeles. 3496
