COLOMBO, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne and the visiting Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang stressed here on Friday to enhance the two friendly nations' cooperation in a wide range of areas including economy, education, culture and international affairs.Jayaratne told Zhang that Sri Lanka's economy has been greatly benefited by some mega-projects funded by China in recent years. He also expressed his gratitude to China's participation in Sri Lanka's economic rebuilding after the conclusion of a 30-year-old civil war.The Sri Lanka prime minister said Sri Lanka treasures the friendship between the two countries and unswervingly supports China on issues of her core interests.Zhang congratulated Sri Lanka for the end of the civil war, as well as the steady progress in rebuilding and social-economic development.He said China hopes to continue to increase friendly exchange between the two countries and enhance cooperation in the areas of infrastructure, industry, communication, energy, education, culture, tourism, among others.Zhang also proposed the two countries to enhance multilateral cooperation in the international arena to protect the just rights and interests of the developing nations.They also witnessed the signing of several economic and commercial cooperation agreements after their talks.Sri Lankan speaker Chamal Rajapaksa held talks with Zhang earlier on Friday.The Chinese vice premier arrived in Colombo Thursday night for a three-day visit to Sri Lanka, the second stop of his four-nation tour which will also take him to Greece and Austria. BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- China is completing a nationwide training for presidents of grassroots courts Friday, following the downfall of a group of judicial officials implicated in corruption scandals.More than 3,600 presidents from intermediate and grassroots courts across the country attended the training in Beijing, a year-long-event that focused on raising their awareness of corruption-free law enforcement and improving their abilities in handling social disputes, according to information released by the Supreme People's Court (SPC) on Thursday.More than 80 high-ranking judges, including SPC President Wang Shengjun, delivered lectures during the training, which also covered topics of improving the judges' knowledge in coping with public opinion as well as that of the media."Given the complex and volatile international situation and rising domestic demand for judicial services against the backdrop of emerging social conflicts ...it is imperative to undergo such large-scale training for presidents from grassroots courts." said Zhou Zemin, director of SPC's political department.Over the past year, a string of high-level judicial officials were punished for their involvement in corruption scandals.Among them were former SPC vice president Huang Songyou, who was sentenced on Jan. 19 to life imprisonment for taking bribes and embezzlement and Wen Qiang, former director of the Chongqing Municipal Judicial Bureau, who was executed on charges of corruption charges involving organized crime.Training judicial staff has long been a priority on the SPC's agenda.The SPC spent three years training judges of grassroots courts from 2005 to 2007.Since 2006, the SPC sent lecturers to grassroots courts in the western provinces and autonomous regions. As of Thursday, nearly 150,000 judges and police officers have attended such lectures, according to the SPC.

BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) -- China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the country's top economic planner, refuted on Monday recent reports online saying China is mulling adjustments of electricity prices, claiming such reports "untrue" .The NDRC said in a statement on its website that recently there were reports online saying the NDRC was studying plans to adjust electricity prices, citing Li Jing, deputy head of the Department of Resource Conservation and Environmental Protection at NDRC. Reports said she has not given the timetable for the plan.The statement further said she never made such remarks to media and the reports were groundless.The NDRC began a rise in the price of electricity for non-residential use by 2.8 fen (0.4 cents) per kwh on average nationwide on November 20 last year, with residential electricity prices unchanged.

BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Central Meteorological Station warned Sunday that rainstorms would again batter many provinces and regions in the coming days bringing with it bigger risks of new flooding and other geological disasters in central and eastern China.From Monday until Wednesday, the observatory forecast some regions in provinces including Guizhou, Hunan, Hubei, and Anhui will see heavy rain.Eastern Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, central Henan, Chongqing and Shanghai will also see rainstorms during the next three days.A total of 14.92 million people in 10 provinces and regions along China's longest river, the Yangtze, have had their lives disrupted after torrential rains began pounding since July 8, a statement from the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH) said Sunday.Rain-triggered floods also brought damage to 806,000 hectares of farmland and destroyed 20,000 houses, with direct economic losses standing at 8.6 billion yuan (1.3 billion U.S. dollars), a statement from the flood control authority said.Official figures showed during the 10 days ended on Saturday, at least 50 people were confirmed dead and 15 others were still missing in 9 provinces after heavy rains.Rain-triggered floods have left 14 people dead and three others missing in Chongqing Municipality since Thursday, toppling more than 3,000 houses, partly cutting off power supply and causing the evacuation of 80,400 people, according to the local government.The floods have affected the lives of more than 1.7 million people in 17 districts and counties there, incurring 1.34 billion yuan in direct economic losses, Chongqing's flood-control and drought-relief headquarters said.In Hubei Province, 17 people were killed and three others missing amid downpours since July 3, which affected the lives of more than 5.63 million people in 75 counties across the province, Hubei's Civil Affairs Administration said Sunday.More than 182,500 residents had been relocated after heavy rains damaged more than 71,000 houses, inundated 537,650 hectares of farmland, cutting off many road services and suspended power supply.In Jiangxi Province, more than 34,000 people have been evacuated since July 5 when downpours began to hit 22 counties, pulling down more than 2,400 houses.So far 620,000 people from five provinces in eastern and central China have been evacuated from flood-hit areas as soldiers from the People's Liberation Army and armed police forces mobilize to fight the floods.Chen Lei, Minister of Water Resources, also SFDH vice director, said at a work meeting Sunday that local authorities should come up with detailed plans for flood control to minimize losses caused by the disaster.A total of 8 work teams sent by SFDH are also helping with flood control work in provinces along the Yangtze and in northwest China's Qinghai Province, where thousands of people were evacuated Sunday from Golmud City as a risky reservoir nearby was on the verge of breaching after heavy rain.But the water level of the reservoir has begun easing, the SFDH said, as temporary channels had been dug to divert water.Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu urged at a work conference Saturday relevant departments to closely monitor the weather and issue alerts promptly, reinforce dams and dikes as well as resettle people affected by the floods.Meteorological experts warned cities should be on alert against water logging while mountainous areas should be wary of mud flows and landslides triggered by heavy rains.
