ARLINGTON, Va. – Within an hour of a food bank’s opening came a delivery organizers have been counting on: frozen chicken by the pallet. “Two weeks ago, we began preparations for the future,” said Charles Meng, director of the Arlington Food Assistance Center in Virginia. Meng remembers the last time they encountered a sudden spike in need – right after 9/11. “We saw a very significant increase at that time,” he said. “And so, this is just that on steroids.” The center typically serves about 80,000 pounds of food to 2,400 families a week. One-third of those they help are children under 18, but the numbers are starting to climb. “We expect to see is many more of those families come to us. That's really going to be the first bump up,” Meng said. Like many food banks across the country, the economic conditions brought on by the coronavirus are stretching their resources and those of families all over the country. “It will last them until we come back on Friday and I don’t have to worry about what they’re eating,” said one parent, Sarah Baldrick, who was in Ohio picking up food, during a distribution at a local school there. There is some cause for concern, though, when it comes to food bank donations. So far, the food assistance center says they are still getting help from corporations, companies and individuals. However, they are seeing trouble from some supermarkets. “That amounts, in our case, to about 40-percent of the food we distribute -- have all but dried up,” Meng said of the food bank’s supermarket donations. “So, we're going to have to significantly increase the purchasing of food for our families.” That means they now have to count on monetary donations to buy food for those in need, at a time when people’s pocketbooks are taking a hit. “I'm relying on the generosity of this community,” Meng said. “We all have a need to survive this time.” It is a time that’s now filled with uncertainty.For more information on the Arlington Food Assistance Center, 2004

TAMPA, Fla. — Three generations of one Tampa Bay family say they wound up in oncoming traffic after a blowout involving a newer tire.Steve Nelson says he purchased four new tires last November, but they had just 300 miles on them when he hit the road with his son and grandson in June. The trio left Tampa for a cross country camping trip to Yosemite in California — an adventure that took a scary turn on the drive back home.Steve said he lost control of the truck after the front driver's side tire blew out on I-40 near Gallup New Mexico. “We wound up in the oncoming lane dodging semi-trucks,” he said. Steve a retired insurance manager showed us the invoice for over 0 that he paid to replace the two front tires in New Mexico. The paperwork indicates the tires he bought new last November had about 4,200 miles on them. Normally tires don't need replacing before 30,000 miles or more.During the trip home, Steve stopped at a tire shop in Irvin, Texas and asked that they check the back tires. That Dodge dealer replaced the rear tires and wrote on the invoice that those tires had broken cords. Steve made a call for action after he says Mavis, the shop where he bought the tires, denied his claim for a refund. ABC Action News asked Chris Brazzeal, the owner of Brazzeal Tire in Tampa, to examine the original tires that came off the pickup. Chris showed us bubbling and rubber separation on two of the tires. “That is a clear indication the tire is now coming apart,” said Brazzeal. We contacted both Mavis and the tire manufacturer Vee Rubber. “Mavis is committed to providing safe and high-quality services to our customers. We have been in contact with the customer regarding this issue and have reached out to the tire manufacturer on his behalf to facilitate a resolution,” the company wrote.After we got involved a representative from Vee Rubber flew to Tampa, examined the tires and admitted one of them was defective. In an instant, the windshield to Rob Weber's small airplane shattered while a thousand feet in the air. “I was pretty much on the edge of blacking out,” he describes. A camera in the cockpit captured it all. When you slow down the video, you can see a bird fly right through the windshield, forcing Weber to declare an emergency as he approached the airport in Fort Myers, Florida. “After I’d taken the hit to the head, I was really dazed,” Weber recalls. “I was having a hard time communicating with them, because I was knocked silly. I really couldn't focus on where I was or what was going on.” The latest data shows there are a record number of bird strikes involving planes, with more than 40 a day on average. A big reason for the spike: more flights and a jump in the bird population. “It's a classic probability situation. More planes and more large birds in the air at the same time,” explains Michael Begier with the National Bird Strike Committee. Begier works with the organization to track incidents and find ways to reduce them. Statistically speaking, the highest chances of being involved in bird strike are from July through October, during the day and while approaching the airport. The accident involving US Airways Flight 1549, known as the Miracle on the Hudson, is perhaps the most memorable and extreme example of how damaging bird strikes can be. However, the majority of bird strikes do not cause any major damage to planes. “The percentage of damaging strikes has actually been going down in the airport environment and that's where it's most vulnerable,” Begier says.For years, workers have used loud noises and fireworks at airports to scare off birds, but they have started testing new ideas, including using drones that look like large predatory birds and redesigning the lights on airplanes to deter birds. 1851
