An eruption from the Kilauea volcano's summit shot ash and smoke into the air early Thursday on Hawaii's Big Island, and the resulting plume is expected to cover the surrounding area, according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.Nearby residents are being asked to shelter in place if they are in the path of the ash plume, which the wind is carrying to the southeast of the volcano."Driving conditions may be dangerous so if you are driving pull off the road and wait until visibility improves," an alert from the observatory warned.Thursday's eruption is just the latest volcanic activity contributing to the nightmare on the Big Island since the volcano first went off May 3.An ash plume Wednesday rose roughly 12,000 feet into the air, and on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey issued a red alert, which means a major eruption is imminent or underway and ash could affect air traffic. It is not clear if this was a phreatic eruption, which US Geological Survey officials have been saying is capable of sending ash plumes as far as 12 miles away from the summit. These are steam-driven explosions that occur when water beneath the ground or on the surface is heated by magma, lava, hot rocks or new volcanic deposits, the USGS says. The intense heat may cause that water to boil and result in eruptions. The lava lake in the crater has been dropping since May 2, which increases the chances for a phreatic explosion, but it will be difficult to warn residents who may be in the path of such an eruption.Phreatic eruptions are "notoriously hard to forecast, and can occur with little or no warning," Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologist Janet Babb said. While the ash being launched into the sky is not poisonous, Hawaii County officials have warned residents about toxic sulfur dioxide seeping out of 21 fissures caused by the volcano."Severe conditions may exist such as choking and inability to breathe," the county's Civil Defense Agency said Wednesday. "This is a serious situation that affects the entire exposed population."The-CNN-Wire 2051

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) says it screened more travelers on the day before Thanksgiving than any day since March 16, around the time the COVID-19 pandemic hit the U.S.TSA spokesperson Lisa Farbstein announced on Twitter Thursday that the administration screened 1,070,967 people at its checkpoints nationwide on Wednesday.“It's the highest volume since March 16 and only the 4th time passenger throughput has topped 1 million since that date,” wrote Farbstein.Still, air travel is significantly down, compared to in 2019. Last year, TSA says 2,602,631 people were screened on Thanksgiving eve. That’s more than double the amount screened this year.As coronavirus cases spike throughout the country, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is advising not to travel to visit loved ones this Thanksgiving. Officials want Americans to avoid spreading the coronavirus, especially to those most vulnerable, like the elderly.Instead, the CDC is suggesting that Americans should stay home and celebrate turkey day with the people they live with."Gatherings with family and friends who do not live with you can increase the chances of getting or spreading COVID-19 or the flu," the CDC says. 1245

An Uber driver in Arizona said he pulled up to give a ride Easter morning and ended up with an AR-15 assault rifle in his face. Edward Martinez said two men called for a ride and while he waited at the curb, a third man came out of the house with no shirt and a gun. "He points it at me and says, 'call 9-1-1,"' said Martinez. Not knowing what was happening, Martinez started dialing and talking to the 9-1-1 dispatcher, and the guy with the gun went back inside. In the meantime, he said the two riders got in his car and told him not to worry about the guy with the gun. About that time, the man with the gun returned. "That's when he put a round in the chamber," said Martinez. "The [passenger] door was open... and then he had the weapon, it was about [half way] in the car, and I just took off."Martinez drove to a Quick Trip. He said his passengers tossed something out the window on the way and disappeared when he parked to wait for El Mirage police. An El Mirage officer ended up arresting the armed man, 25-year-old Nicholas Brasseur. Police searched his home and wrote in the police report that they found drugs and 25 AR-15 assault rifles.  "My profession is manufacturing AR-15s," Brasseur told the court at his initial appearance. The judge informed him that he would not be allowed to continue working with weapons or be in possession of any weapons while awaiting a resolution to the charges, which include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possessing or using a weapon during a drug offense.       Martinez said he reported the incident to Uber but has not received a followup call. "I'm missing work. Where's any concern? What can we do to help you? Do you need to see a counselor? Or any of that kind of stuff," said Martinez. Meanwhile, he says he doesn't know if he'll ever drive again. "Not today, not the next day," said Martinez. "Why would I want to put my life [at risk] and lose my life. I can't."An Uber spokesperson told Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix they've banned all the people involved from the Uber app and will co-operate with police.  The spokesperson said they're glad Martinez is OK and plan to follow up with him soon.  2268

As many NFL fans question the patriotism of kneeling NFL players, the spotlight is now turning to the fans themselves. The Green Bay Packers handed out small American Flags during the Packers-Lions Monday Night Game, as part of the NFL's Salute to Service Military Campaign. "During the National Anthem, everybody was waving (their flags) and singing," Marine veteran Tegan Griffith told WTMJ.  "It made me feel very good."However, by halftime, Griffith says she and her fellow veterans noticed many of the flags were discarded."We started noticing people leaving (flags) on the ground, next to food wrappers and beer cups," Griffith explained.  "We found a couple on the bathroom floor.  The veterans I was with started to get a little upset."After the game, the flags were seen everywhere."It looked like red, white, and blue confetti," described Phil Olson, a season ticker holder.  "People were walking all over them.  It struck me as unpatriotic."After the game, both Olson and Griffith told WTMJ they spotted several fans picking up the extra flags."I'm going to tell the Packers they they shouldn't hand out flags because it's the wrong venue," Olson said. "Every game, the Packers will give out a souvenir with the Packers logo on it.  Everybody takes the (souvenir) home.  But after this game, hardly anybody wanted the American flag."The Packers released a statement on the matter:"We distributed more than 77,000 United States flags as part of the Salute to Service theme of the game. We were particularly pleased with how they contributed to the festive atmosphere of the game, especially during the national anthem. We received a lot of positive feedback. We often have fan giveaways and this one was very popular. Our stadium- and guest-services teams picked up any flags they noticed on the ground." 1897

Anyone scared of snakes on the ground may not want to read this story — because the reptiles are also in the sky.The paradise snake, which is native to south and southeast Asia, has been known to scientists for some time. But they never really understood how the species — and others like it — are able to glide through the air.Researchers at Virginia Tech conducted controlled tests with the snakes in an indoor environment. They discovered that the undulating motion the snakes exhibit while gliding stabilizes them, which allows them to fly further. Previously, researchers thought the snakes' movements in the air were the same movement they used when slithering on the ground. Now, researchers say they want to learn how the snakes generate lift and how they can turn in the air.Luckily, while the paradise snake is poisonous, its venom is weak compared to other species. Like almost all snakes, the paradise snake is considered harmless to humans. 960
