The pandemic has added extra stress to our lives, but that's not stopping some of us from getting more sleep.New research from the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Washington looked at how stay-at-home orders and social distancing guidelines have impacted college students' sleeping habits.They found that on average, students have been sleeping 30 minutes more per weekday and 24 minutes more per weekend day. They've also been keeping more consistent sleep schedules.This is similar to what a study of people ages 18 to 65 in Europe found during this same time.So, the big question now is whether these habits will continue now that stay at home orders are lifted.“One of the things we recognize is that when people who weren't getting enough sleep start to actually get better sleep because they can and they realize ‘wow that makes a difference in my life,’ a number of people choose behaviorally to go ahead and continue to get that better sleep,” said Ken Wright, integrative physiology professor at CU Boulder.As for the question about whether the quality of our sleep has improved, the study in Europe did look at that. It found on average, people have been seeing slight reductions in the quality of their sleep, but there are things you can do to help with this.“When they looked at the group as a whole, they found that those people who got exercise and got more sunlight during the COVID stay-at-home, they found that they actually had less reductions in their sleep quality,” said Wright.One negative result of the stay-at-home orders on our sleep in both studies – people have been going to bed later, both during the week and on weekends. The pandemic is having an impact on the mental health of many Americans. Young people are particularly feeling this with changes in learning and missed milestones.In a new survey of 14 to 24-year-olds, Mental Health America found 24% of those surveyed think training adults would help with their mental health challenges.About 47% said they want to learn more about how to help their own mental health, which is what one new program developed during the pandemic is trying to do.“What we're hearing is that young people are depressed, that they have very little hope for the future, and they want skills to be able to help themselves and their peers,” said Martin Rafferty, CEO and founder of Oregon-based nonprofit Youth Era.The program Uplift by Youth Era is a five-day event and training that is free for young people.“It’s giving them the skillsets to take a look around in their community and say I can be a part of change. I can help things even in this dark time,” said Rafferty. “You're not alone, and you are powerful and capable of making a difference.”The training includes identifying signs of distress, building coping skills to use during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, and learning about self-care.Oxford is studying the program and says so far, the results have been positive.The people behind the program say teens have told them it feels more like an event than going to Zoom school.If you know a young person who would benefit from this, they can get more information here. 1503

The Pac-12 has set Sept. 26 as the start of its 10-game conference-only football schedule. The Pac-12 announced three weeks ago it would eliminate nonconference games for its 12 member schools.. The new plan adds an additional cross-divisional game to each team’s slate and moves the conference championship game back two weeks to Dec. 18 or 19. That game was set to be played for the first time at the new NFL stadium in Las Vegas. The Lee County Sheriff's Office says a Minnesota fugitive wanted for the murder of her husband is also responsible for a murder in Fort Myers Beach, Florida this week.Lee County Undersheriff Carmine Marceno said in a press conference Friday that they believe that Lois Reiss has since fled Southwest Florida to the Corpus Christi, Texas area.A national manhunt is under way for Reiss, who is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached.Marceno says Reiss befriended 59-year-old Pamela Hutchinson and targeted her due to their similar appearance. Investigators say Reiss murdered Hutchinson in her?condo Monday, then took her ID and car and fled Southwest Florida in Hutchinson's white 2005 Acura TL with a Florida license plate Y37-TAA.Reiss is believed to have traveled through the Gulf coast to Corpus Cristi, Texas, but her current whereabouts are unknown.Reiss is wanted for Murder and Grand Theft.According to KLXT-TV in Rochester, Minnesota, Reiss is facing second degree murder charges there after shooting her husband to death back in March.According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Reiss’ car was found abandoned in Florida earlier this week and she remains at large.Law enforcement also believe she stole over ,000 from her deceased husband's business. 1347
