SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In light of the governor's directive on limiting large gatherings out of coronavirus concerns, the San Diego Half Marathon announced on Thursday that this Sunday's event will be "virtual" only. While many runners support the decision to cancel the San Diego Half Marathon, they're upset that it doesn't appear there will be any refunds.Organizers sent 10News a statement that reads in part, "By their very nature, the cost of events like ours are front loaded and [non-recoupable], which is why we do not have a refund or deferral policy. This policy is clearly stated in our registration process and is agreed to by runners when they sign up for the event."RELATED: What's been canceled, postponed in San Diego, nationally due to coronavirusMajor changes are also happening to other local events. This weekend’s 5K Leprechaun run in Pacific Beach is canceled. The upcoming Pearl Jam concert at Viejas Arena is now postponed. WonderCon Anaheim is also being postponed.Fears continue to loom over July’s Comic-Com convention but organizers report that it’s still scheduled to take place. “Rip” Rippetoe is the President of the San Diego Convention Center. He tells 10News, “I think it's too soon to speculate on any events that would happen in May, June or July.”“Events of a certain size have been canceled and we're seeing that's to prevent the spread of illness,” says Skylar Crowley with the Better Business Bureau in San Diego. She says consumers need to be reading the fine print on all tickets sale transactions, adding, “If there are cancellations and the tickets were purchased through an original seller- an official site- they should automatically issue a refund to that consumer.”RELATED: Disneyland, California Adventure to close through March due to coronavirusHowever, Crowley says that if the event is postponed and the consumer can't go, he or she might have to submit a formal request through the purchasing platform. A spokesperson for StubHub writes to 10News, "Our policy is to provide a full refund with fees if an event is canceled. In addition, given the current environment, if an event is canceled, customers can opt to receive a StubHub coupon valued at 120 percent of the original purchase." “We do advise that consumers ensure that they are submitting payment with a credit card so in the event that something is indisputable, they can take that to the credit card company and see about getting a refund that way,” adds Crowley.RELATED: San Diego County announces five new coronavirus cases, bans large gatheringsShe says that if consumers are struggling to get access to any refunds that they’re entitled to, they can file a formal complaint with the Better Business Bureau or the Federal Trade Commission. 2763

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Mayor Kevin Faulconer, County Supervisor Ron Roberts and county health officials announced Tuesday a plan of "Vaccination, Sanitation & Education" to stop San Diego's hepatitis A outbreak."This is our community and we are working day and night to take care of it. It is going to require a sustained effort and everyone in San Diego County has a role to play," Mayor Faulconer said. The county's top medical professionals say there is no end in sight to the outbreak that began in March. RELATED: San Diego Hepatitis A death toll, those sickened rises"This outbreak could last another six months and unfortunately there are going to be more lives that are going to be at risk," said Dr. Nick Yphantides, the county's chief medical examiner at a news conference outside the county administration building. Officials gave critical updates about the outbreak, which has killed 16 people and sickened 444 others. While most of the cases involved the homeless or drug users, 25 percent of the patients were neither, health officials said.Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection that is usually transmitted by fecal-oral or person-to-person contact, or consumption of contaminated food or water. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Just after President Donald Trump addressed the nation about border security, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Barrio Logan held an event to recruit volunteers to help at asylum shelters. “The primary purpose was to let people know from a more personal perspective what’s taking place with the caravan,” said Father John Auther, pastor at Our Lady. The volunteers work with the San Diego Rapid Response Network to help the migrants who make it across the border.Several people who had volunteered in the past got up to speak about their experiences. “If I thought I was humble, it’s made me more humble. It’s rewarding,” said Martha Carriedo. She has volunteered for months at the shelter which is housed in an undisclosed location in San Diego. It serves as a temporary refuge for asylum seekers who have made it through the border legally but need help finding a way to meet with friends or family. Or if they don’t have any connections in the U.S., to find a sponsor or longer-term housing option while they wait for their asylum case to be heard. Father John estimates they have helped 4,000 migrants since October. 1145

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Investigators are still piecing together the circumstances surrounding the 2-year-old girl who died after she was found in a hot car in Tierrasanta. Police tell 10News the mother called 911 Monday afternoon, saying she had just woken up from a nap and could not find her daughter in their home on Leary Street. The woman later called back and said she found her daughter in her Nissan Altima, unresponsive and not breathing, according to police. It is still unclear how long the child was in the vehicle. The Child Abuse Unit is now investigating.“The biggest mistake anyone could ever make is to think that it couldn’t happen to them,” said Janette Fennell, founder of Kids and Cars. The organization’s statistics showed 26 kids have died after being left in a hot car so far this year. Right now, technology does exist to alert families of an unattended child in a vehicle. One device is called “Sense-A-Life,” created by two Florida dads. It involves a sensor placed under a car seat. If you put the vehicle in park and open the door, an alarm will remind the driver of a child in the back. If there’s no response, it will send an alert to our phone. A few cars, like the Kia Telluride, has a sensor system built into it. It warns the driver when you exit your vehicle that someone may still be inside. The vehicle’s horn will go off if you have not returned to open the door.Fennell said there is a push to get the Hot Cars Act passed at a federal level. It would mandate technology in all vehicles that would alert drivers to someone left in their car, but she said there has been resistance. “It probably comes down to money, but it also comes down to the auto industry that fights against all these types of things,” Fennell said. “Every single safety item in your vehicle people should understand have been very long, hard battles. Like decades.”Fennell said it will take in part, political will to get the Hot Cars Act passed. 1962
