Feeding San Diego is helping bridge the hunger gap in hopes of making it easier for active-duty military, their families, and veterans to get the food they need and deserve. Desiree Mieir is a mom of four. Her husband is currently serving his tenth year in the Navy. She says the high cost of living in San Diego makes it tough to survive here. "It's several dollars of a difference as far as gas goes. Milk, eggs, all your basic necessities," said Mieir. "If we want to go on a day trip, we have to make room in the budget for that." Now, every month, the family gets access to free food at Dewey Elementary School, one of Feeding San Diego's distribution sites. The access gives families some financial relief without compromising the kid's nutrition. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - HazMat teams responded to a fire station in North Park after a suspicious package was found outside the station, according to a San Diego Fire-Rescue official.Fire crews found the package by Station 14's front door around 3:20 p.m. Sunday when they returned from a call.Fire officials told 10News the package was a taped-up cardboard box with writing on it that made it appear dangerous. Some of the words were misspelled.The hazmat and bomb personnel set up a perimeter around the station, blocking off 32nd Street and Lincoln Avenue by about a block in each direction.The bomb squad x-rayed the package, determined that it was not dangerous, and reopened the street around 5:45 p.m.The package was filled with aluminum flux and trash, according to a tweet from San Diego Fire-Rescue.At about 3p on Sunday someone left this box at SDFD North Park station on 32nd St. The bomb team was called to ID the contents - aluminum flux and some trash. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Former Major Leaguer Jacque Jones grew up in Southeast San Diego, and is giving back to the community. He has started an organization called "All Hands on Deck," and it's about grooming kids from his neighborhood for success, whether it's on the baseball field or in the classroom. Jones played 10 season's in the MLB but says his foundation was set during his days at San Diego High School."San Diego High turned out to be the right experience and the best experience for me to further my career in baseball," said Jones.But his major league dreams came long before he was a Caver, saying, "I knew at 5 years old I was going to be a big leaguer," he added.He went on to play at USC and was also a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team. He was drafted by the Minnesota Twins and would play for four major league organizations in his career."Yes, we won a bronze medal, which I say was disappointing, but I'm blessed in the same token because not that many people can say they won an Olympic medal," Jones said, saying of his time in the MLB, "I enjoyed it and I played hard every day. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Even though many local businesses have struggled amid the pandemic and San Diego County saw an unprecedented spike in unemployment in the second quarter, there has not been a significant jump in the number of empty retail storefronts -- at least not yet.The vacancy rate in San Diego County ticked up slightly to 5.6 percent in the second quarter, according to an analysis by commercial real estate firm CBRE.Vacancies tend to be a lagging indicator. Large national chains like 24 Hour Fitness and Pier 1 Imports have announced closures in recent weeks, but the businesses are still occupying their commercial spaces. 24 Hour Fitness is closing four clubs in San Diego County. Pier 1 Imports is closing all 11 of its local stores; four of those locations have already closed.While vacancies take time, the pandemic has slowed the region’s commercial real estate market in other ways, said CBRE Associate Field Research Director Michael Combs.New leasing activity in the retail sector dropped to nearly a 10-year low in the second quarter, down nearly 50 percent from the first three months of 2020.“There just haven't been a lot of new deals as tenants especially in retail are waiting to see how this situation plays out,” he said.The slowdown in new leasing activity may be a sign that companies are holding off on plans to expand operations, since new leases with larger footprints are typically signed far in advance. 1448
