EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - The pandemic created a surge in food insecurity in San Diego and the purple tier restrictions are making it worse. Neighbors are stepping in to fill the bellies of those in need.In El Cajon a bright yellow wooden box is perched next to the sidewalk. On it a sign reads, "Blessing Box".Inside it's stocked like a mini grocery store, with grains like rice and pasta, beans, canned vegetables and protein. Single serving hot chocolate, tea and oatmeal line the second shelf. On the top shelf, snacks, drinks, and items to round out a meal are ready for the taking.Andrea Roberts heard of a Blessing Box in 2018 on social media and immediately knew she needed one.Her friend had the same intuition and had her husband craft the wooden box. They surprised Roberts by dropping it off on her porch.Roberts painted the box, affixed a stand to it, and cemented the stand in the grass next to her sidewalk in September 2018.Momentum has been growing through social media and the urge to help during the pandemic."Yesterday was jam packed, I had several people come and bring stuff, so much stuff they left the excess on the porch," Roberts said.She lifted her garage door to unveil piles of food and shelves of canned food, illustrating the willingness to give by the community."I'm overwhelmed, really overwhelmed." Roberts said when she put up the box she thought it would be self sustaining, 'take what you need and give what you can.'Since the pandemic, she said, there's been a surge in need and donations.According to the San Diego Hunger Coalition, more than 1,000,000 San Diegans are food insecure.That translates to three out of every ten people in the county don't know where they'll get their next meal."My hope is just that people find a resource where there is no shame no timeline, if you're working and you're barely making it. Maybe you can't get to a food distribution or a pantry, where this is available 24 hours a day."There are Blessing Boxes around San Diego, at churches, one in La Mesa, Santee, Escondido and Julian. Due to a recent rise in reported health issues, the US Food and Drug Administration warned on Tuesday against using or purchasing Rhino male enhancement products.Since 2007, the FDA said, it has identified more than 25 Rhino products, some with names such as Platinum Rhino 25000 and Krazzy Rhino 25000, that have hidden drug ingredients.The FDA said the products are often sold in single-serving packages at locations such as gas stations and convenience stores, or through online retailers such as eBay and Amazon. Recently, the products have also been found in international mail shipments, the agency said.In an email, eBay spokesman Ryan Moore said, "Product safety is important to eBay and we work hard to ensure our marketplace is free of harmful products. These types of items are prohibited under our policies, and therefore not allowed to be listed on the eBay market place." EBay regularly sweeps the site to remove such items, he said.Amazon has not responded to a request for comment."Over the past few years, the FDA has been combatting the retail sale of male enhancement drug products that are frequently misrepresented as dietary supplements and that contain hidden and potentially harmful active drug ingredients," said Donald D. Ashley, director of the Office of Compliance at the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.According to the FDA, the "products contain undeclared ingredients that are the same as or structurally similar to active ingredients found in FDA-approved prescription drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction."For example, some Rhino products contain the same active ingredient as Viagra and Cialis, sildenafil and/or tadalafil, respectively. These undeclared ingredients can lead to "significant safety issues and the risk of serious adverse events," the FDA said."The FDA has received reports of people experiencing chest pain, severe headaches and prolonged erections after taking a Rhino product that led to surgical intervention and hospitalization due to extreme drops in blood pressure," according to the agency.People who experience negative health effects or have issues with the quality or safety of a dietary supplement can report it to the FDA's MedWatch Safety Information program. Products identified by the FDA as having hidden active drug ingredients can be found in the tainted products database.Not all misrepresented products are included in the database, and consumers should still be wary, the FDA noted."Consumers should be cautious about using certain products, especially those promoted for sexual enhancement, weight loss, bodybuilding and/or pain relief. Consumers should also be on the alert for products that offer immediate or quick results and that sound too good to be true," the agency said. 2778

(KGTV) - Surveillance video has recently captured multiple incidents of what appears to be a thief returning over and over to prey upon elderly residents of the Salvation Army apartment building in El Cajon.Apartment staff at the building on South Anza Street say there have been at least five robberies between October and Christmas Eve. Each appears to include the same thief."He's the lowest form of life in my book," building superintendent Alex Harmon told 10News. "To prey on the elderly. They've got walkers for crying out loud."In one incident captured on video, the man approached a 97-year-old woman taking a walk on the sidewalk outside the building. He was seen opening her bag, which was placed on her walker, then removing an item and walking away.The woman later told building staff that he had struck up a conversation about her walker and that she had offered him candy. She says he opened her bag and instead of taking candy, stole her wallet.In a separate incident, the suspected thief and what appears to be a lookout are seen carefully observing an elderly woman walking by. One man then turned and followed her around the corner. She told 10News that's when he raced up and grabbed her gold necklace, breaking off her gold cross, and running off.Multiple police reports have been filed with El Cajon Police Department, which is investigating. 1389

Unfortunately, not all has been easygoing since the iconic shop has re-opened.Area Manager of Little Man Ice Cream, Dominic DiCarlantonio, says this ice cream hot spot hasn’t been spared from the controversy to wear or not to wear a mask in public."Ninety-nine percent of our community is amazing and has been helpful and supportive of all we’ve tried to do with COVID. The one percent has been very vocal and direct about things," says DiCarlantonio.Vocal is just half of it.Little Man Ice Cream owner, Paul Tamburello, posted to Facebook saying in one instance a customer spat on an employee. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Three lanes of Interstate 8 closed Friday night after at least one person was killed in a fiery crash near State Route 67. Around 5:30 p.m. a man driving in the fast lane of I-8 lost control and swerved into the center divider before reaching the slow lane and hitting 1997 Wabash 53-foot trailer being towed by a 2013 Kenworth T660, according to California Highway Patrol. Witnesses reported that the Ford was cut off by an unidentified vehicle which merged from the eastbound #2 lane into the #1 (fast lane) lane directly into the Ford’s path of travel. The driver of the Ford made a turning movement to the left and impacted the concrete center divide wall. As a result, the Ford veered back across the eastbound traffic lanes and broadsided the trailer.As the crash happened, the Ford became lodged under the trailer and was dragged for several hundred feet. CHP said as the car came to rest the Ford and trailer burst into flames.  1016
