BEIJING, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met here on Friday with a delegation from the Rodong Sinmun, the leading official newspaper of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). The delegation, headed by the newspaper's editor-in-chief, Kim Ki Ryong, is visiting China at the invitation of the People's Daily.Li said good relations between China and the DPRK have helped safeguard regional peace and stability and boost socialist consturction of the two countries.The CPC higly values the traditional China-DPRK friendship and to continuously consolidate and develop the friendship is an unswerving policy of the Party, Li said. Li Changchun (R), a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, meets with Kim Gi Ryong, chief editor of Rodong Sinmun daily of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), in Beijing, capital of China, Nov. 5, 2010.Li spoke highly of the exchanges between the People's Daily and the Rodong Sinmun, official newspapers of the two countries' ruling parties.Li encouraged the two newspapers to work to promote mutual understanding and trust between the two peoples and advance China-DPRK friendly, cooperative relations.Kim echoed Li's views on bilateral relations. He said his newspaper would work to develop the friendship between the two peoples.

BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here Thursday that the Chinese government would develop more open policies to attract high-level foreign talent to China.China's development would not be achieved without the understanding and support from the international community, Wen said.He also urged government departments to create more favorable policies for foreign experts in China, concretely implement the policies and provide better working and living conditions for these experts.Wen made the remarks during his meeting with 50 foreign experts who had won this year's "Friendship Award" at the Great Hall of the People.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (C) meets with foreign experts, who have just received the Friendship Award presented by the Chinese government, and their relatives in Beijing, capital of China, Sept. 30, 2010. A total of 1,149 foreign experts from 60 countries have been awarded the honor since it was issued in 1991.This year's 50 winners come from 16 countries, and they are experts in various fields such as industry, agriculture, energy technology, environment, education, health and cultural sectors. They received the award at a ceremony on Wednesday.On Thursday, Wen also met with new ambassadors to China from 32 countries at the Great Hall of the People.

BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday called on Papua New Guinea to facilitate Chinese investment in the island country in southwest Pacific Ocean."We hope Papua New Guinea will provide conveniences to Chinese business investment in your country and seek common growth," Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang told the visiting Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Michael Somare.Li highlighted Papua New Guinea's role as China's important trade partner and investment destination among Pacific island countries.Bilateral trade totaled about 860 million U.S. dollars in 2008, according to the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang (R) meets with Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Michael Somare in Beijing, capital of China, Sept. 14, 2010.Somare said his country would like to improve the investment environment, promote mutually beneficial cooperation with China and make positive efforts to advance bilateral cooperation and enhance friendship.Somare is leading a delegation to Beijing after his stop in China's port city Tianjin, where he met with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the New Champions 2010, also known as the Summer Davos.This was the second meeting between Li and Somare as Li visited Port Moresby, capital and the largest city of Papua New Guinea, last November.In their meeting in Diaoyutai Guesthouse in western Beijing later Tuesday, Li stressed the good momentum of bilateral relations in recent years, saying the two countries maintained frequent high-level exchanges and sought pragmatic cooperation in a wide range of fields.China and Papua New Guinea shared many political stances, complemented each other economically and enjoyed a huge potential for enhanced relationship, Li said.Looking to the future, Li said China would like to increase exchange of visits, expand trade and investment, explore cooperation in agriculture, forestry, fishery, energy, resources, transportation, culture, education with the island country.Li reaffirmed China's commitment to seeking stronger coordination and cooperation with Papua New Guinea on international and regional issues.Somare will conclude his China visit on Wednesday.

  

CHENGDU, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese government official said Wednesday that major geological disasters and densely-populated regions would be the two main areas to monitor in the nation's efforts to guard against losses caused by such disasters.In the first 10 months of 2010, 2,909 people were dead or missing following over 30,000 recorded geological disasters, Xu Shaoshi, the Minister of Land and Resources, said at a meeting held Wednesday in Chengdu, capital city of southwestern Sichuan Province.Further, the number of people dead or missing during this period was five times higher than in the same period last year, said Xu.However, the majority of these victims, about 2,000 people, were killed or went missing after five major mud and rock slides which struck areas in west China's Guizhou, Gansu, and Yunnan provinces, Xu said.A massive mudslide triggered by rainstorms slammed Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province this past August, leaving 1,510 dead and 255 others missing."Our focus in loss prevention and control in the future will be to closely watch the major geological disasters and the areas with high human concentrations," said Xu.Xu also urged local governments to make specific plans regarding geological disaster prevention, improve the assessment and pre-cautionary monitoring mechanism, and beef up rescue and response systems in the event of an emergency.

  

ZHENGZHOU, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- A moderate earthquake that hit central China's Henan Province Sunday afternoon levelled 24 houses and left 12 students injured, local officials said early Monday morning.The quake, measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale and with a hypocenter depth of 8 kilometers, truck Zhoukou City at 4:58 p.m., according to the China National Seismological Network.Twenty four houses in Taikang County collapsed while 12 students in a middle school were injured, who are currently in hospital.In Fugou County, about 40 houses were reported to have cracks or other damages.Tremor was felt across eastern Henan, including provincial capital Zhengzhou City.
