SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Wednesday, San Diegans who live in their cars rallied in Ocean Beach to press the city to allow living in vehicles, as residents in various neighborhoods pressure the city to ban the policy once again.Earlier this year, San Diego City Council members repealed its vehicle habitation ordinance after a federal judge found it unconstitutional which halted all enforcement.Then in March, Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced an effort to bring a ban back. The ordinance would prohibit residents from sleeping in their cars from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. within 500 feet of a school or house.Residents say reversing the ban leads to broken glass, bottles of urine, drug paraphanelia, and excrement on sidewalks in some areas. But supporters of the policy said Wednesday they don't park in front of homes or litter along roads.The city says they’ve received hundreds and hundreds of complaints about what people living in cars have done to their neighborhoods. Currently the city is expanding a safe parking program that would allow people to park overnight at monitored sites. 1085

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two men convicted of leading a home-invasion robbery spree with five other people were sentenced to prison terms Friday.A judge sentenced 26-year-old Thomas James Smith to 85 years plus 50 years to life in prison and 22-year-old Aaron Rico III to 35 years plus 25 years to life in prison for their roles the series of violent break-ins.Smith and Rico were convicted of conspiracy to commit burglary, robbery, burglary and sexual assault in June. The violent crime spree began on January 23. The series of crimes included breaking into homes, tying up and assaulting homeowners, and in one case, sexually assaulting a woman. RELATED: 680

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With less than a month until the midterm elections, the campaign to win California’s 50th district congressional seat is fierce.Team 10 Investigative Reporter Jennifer Kastner has been fact-checking the campaign ads released by republican incumbent Duncan Hunter and democratic challenger Ammar Campa-Najjar.Kastner had a sit-down interview with Campa-Najjar Tuesday before his new campaign ad was officially released.Team 10 asked Campa-Najjar if his new ad planned to defend the accusations brought against him from Representative Hunter in Hunter’s most recent campaign ad that was released almost two weeks ago.“The good news is that all of you [media] are doing the defending because [his ad’s] not factual,” Campa-Najjar told Team 10. Campa-Najjar has also called Hunter’s ad un-American and racist.Hunter’s ad claims, “Ammar Campa-Najjar is working to infiltrate Congress." The explosive video garnered a firestorm of attention, centering much around the Latino Arab-American’s family ties to terrorism.It is a fact that Campa-Najjar’s grandfather was involved in the Munich Olympic Massacre, but Campa-Najjar renounced his grandfather, who died years before he was born.Hunter’s ad also implies that Campa-Najjar is a security risk, however Campa-Najjar passed multiple security clearances as a former official in the Obama Administration.“We've raised money off of [Hunter’s] ad,” Campa-Najjar told Team 10. He said the ad has backfired on Hunter, fueling contributions to Campa-Najjar’s campaign from voters who, he said, are disgusted. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two teenage boys from Arizona were hailed as heroes after diving off Sunset Cliffs to save the lives of two people who were drowning on Friday evening. It was a happy ending scene, captured by local photographer, Jim Grant on Friday evening as lifeguards hoisted up a young girl off Sunset Cliffs."It just could have been a tragic event," Grant said on Saturday.He says the photo he took would have been a somber one if two teenage boys did not dive in to save the girls before lifeguards got there. Meet 15-year-old Jake Watson and 16-year-old Zachary Haugen."We've been best friends since third grade," Haugen said.The two boys from Arizona were vacationing in San Diego for the July 4th weekend."We said, 'Alright, let's go explore around,' and we heard about this place called Sunset Cliffs," Watson said.They say they were soaking in the beautiful sunset Friday evening. But when the boys looked down, they saw two ladies in trouble. A six-grade girl and a family friend were splashing around near the reef. Haugen, a licensed lifeguard for the City of Phoenix, knew exactly what was going on."I'm like, 'Oh my gosh, they're drowning.' So that's when I just knew I had to go in." Haugen recalled.They say the girl was climbing on top of the young woman's head, just to breathe. Haugen first pulled the girl off the woman, but the high surf put his own life at risk."I looked up at Jake," Haugen said. "He's like, 'Do you need help?' And I'm just shaking my head, and that's when he was able to jump in and go after them."At that point, Watson, an avid fisherman and swimmer, dove in to lift the girl."I put her on my back and pressed up, and just kind of rolled her off my shoulder, onto the landing," Watson said.They then pulled the injured young woman up. All this happened in under five minutes before San Diego Lifeguards took over."We were like, 'What just happened?' It just felt surreal," Watson said.Surreal that their summer vacation turned into a life-saving episode, these modest boys will never forget."We just happen to be at the right place at the right time at Sunset Cliffs," Haugen said. 2240
